FWIW it's referred to as the air conditioner "condenser". But do call a tech out if you think you've smelled gas; they'll have a device that can lead them to any gas leaks pretty quickly. It won't be a wild goose chase like you might be thinking with the whole family sniffing the air around your house looking for a leak :)

I have a working furnace again! Gas valve was the culprit. Fixed it for less than $100 for parts and tools. Thanks for the help.
