In addition to the regular resources available on campus here's a life hack for the winter:

Get a light therapy lamp/sunlight alarm clock. Vitamin D takes a massive hit over our Canadian winters and a lack thereof is shown to have negative mental health effects. Waking up gradually to sunrise (even simulated) is also shown to be more comforting and beneficial than to abruptly wake up to a blaring alarm in the pitch black morning of winter.

Linked highest rated light therapy lamp and sunlight/sunset clock.

ALSO don't forget to get out and enjoy some of the awesome winter-related nature experiences we have in/around our city as well (Nature experiences even once a week shown to lead to decreases in anxiety/depressive symptoms)

Take care everyone. You are loved

GET A SUN LIGHT!!! Turn it on every morning and off at the same time every evening ~3 hours before bed. Such a great asset for those early dark evenings.

Also ~ why not try to take advantage of the lovely things that the season has to offer such as ice skating, wearing fluffy sweaters and coats, and drinking hot lattes in coffee shops? Walks are not impossible in the cold too!

I certainly don’t associate only winter with death, as it can come at any time. ...that’s not the most comforting thought, sorry, but I think disassociating the season and the concept might help? Perhaps separately you should meditate on death and humanity’s temporary existence on this plane - it is simply the natural way of things, and not something wise to dwell on negatively for longer than necessary.

Edit: I chose a random sunlight, but I’m sure you can find a better priced one with some research. I just liked the orb shape, personally.

Get a light therapy lamp! I have this one and call it my happy lamp! I’ve noticed a pretty big change in my mood and just got it a couple weeks ago! Obviously any type should work but just adding a link to the one that works for me...

u/lostfalco · 7 pointsr/tdcs_brainstimulation

Anecdote: I've been using an 808nm 200mw laser (3 diodes, 66mw per diode) for 7+ months with excellent results (they get better over time)...especially mental endurance and access to stored memories. I have zero affiliations with anyone or any product but here is what I've been using. http://www.vetrolaser.com/

I've also used the 660nm Tendlite with very good results as well. http://www.amazon.com/Anti-inflammatory-Pain-Joint-Management-Fibromyalgia/dp/B004QECAU4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372727739&sr=8-1&keywords=tendlite

This has most of the new studies listed. http://www.reddit.com/r/Nootropics/comments/1dccuq/lowlevel_laser_therapy/

The limit for skin is 320mw/cm2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2796659/

There is an inverted U-shaped dose response curve so make sure you only do 2days on/1day off per location...at most. Every other day also seems to work.

Here is a recent article by one of the foremost photobiomodulation (that's what it's officially called now) researchers, Tiina Karu. She argues that photobiomodulation should be considered a drug equivalent. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23600376

Here is an excellent resource by a photobiomodulation self experimenter. http://heelspurs.com/led.html

That should get you guys started. I hope this amazing technology improves your lives. =)

If you have any questions I've posted extensively on photobiomodulation here. http://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/63228-lostfalcos-extensive-nootropic-experiments/
There are many more studies and a few other anecdotal reports listed there. I sincerely apologize for linking to my thread. There's just SO much info and most of your questions can be answered there.

You definitely should get a sun lamp I have luminette 2 sun lamp glasses. There good for seasonal depression I work shifts so use them the days I work as I work in rooms with no daylight for 12 hours as I have bipolar disorder also so am sensitive to seasonal changes.

We have photoreceptors in our eyes and in response to sunlight they stimulate our brains to produce neurotransmitters so being away from sunlight for 3 months I think this would be helpful for you.

A word of advice if you get these superglue the nose piece in place otherwise it'll forever be falling out and you'll lose it and it's needed so it correctly rests on your nose. I just use them when watching t.v. or on reddit.

u/wandertheearth · 3 pointsr/TheMotte

I never heard of needing a prescription for a good one, but I guess it's possible. I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YSMEBY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/Dullmoonlight · 3 pointsr/occult

I needed a boost of knowledge on something.
So i watched 2001 a space odyssey. After that I meditated with this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00061URFG?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title

This simulated the end scene where he was gaining all the knowledge and became the star child.

While listening to the music playing when the apes first discover the monolith song. The eee song.
After that I drew that symbol and just wrote that poem. I then drew that symbol on an object I needed to help me.

u/larping-lizards · 3 pointsr/redscarepod

Yooo I just bought this sun lamp and I'm excited to use it. It's $30 and has brightness & temperature settings which seems nice since I'd like to get a nice cozy warm glow going alllll winter :) hope it works lol

u/Lamzn6 · 2 pointsr/SeasonalAffective

Luminette 2 - SAD Bright Light Therapy Glasses - More than 60,000 users have more energy and sleep better https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01553VBD6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_Dg48BbVM907DB

These are the ones I have, but if you search for “SAD glasses” there are more options now, apparently. And these are $200 now which is more than I paid. It may be worth trying the cheaper versions. For what it’s worth, I can attest to the quality.

u/kdennis · 2 pointsr/IndoorGarden

Not OP, but I'm guessing it's a SAD/ Light Therapy light, something like this

u/chirmer · 2 pointsr/GetOutOfBed

Sure. I have this one. Got it for like, $30 at CostCo last year. Makes a world of a difference, for me at least, during the dark winter months. Sunlight (or pretend sunlight) actually really, really helps me wake. Maybe it will for others, too.

u/hippityflippity · 2 pointsr/SeasonalAffective

This one works well but I like the hue of light a bit less than a few that are a bit more expensive (it is bluish and feels less like basking in the sun): NatureBright SunTouch Plus Light and Ion Therapy Lamp (package may vary) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000W8Y7FY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_v8VtybG2C7M3Q

This is my favorite one (nice sunlight-like hue, nice and bright-feeling): Northern Light Technology Boxelite 10,000 Lux Bright Light Therapy Light Box, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NPZZ1JW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_W9VtybTPEBHGC

The evidence behind both of these is good. You just gotta make sure you are sitting close enough and long enough (should be no more than a couple feet away and for about 30 min/day).

I use this device to make sure I'm getting enough light and for long enough (not exactly what the product was made for but it works - it measures anything over 2500 lux so you will know if you are sitting too far from the light): SunSprite Wearable Light Tracker https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KX5X4T6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_S.Vtyb221SKDB

Hope this helps! I'm a bit of a light-junkie so PM me or post here if you have any questions.

u/Angel_FS · 2 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

A natural light lamp might help, there are some good cheap ones and some amazing expensive ones. Where we live, vitamin D supplements are over the counter and during winter we take 4000iu per day. Our doctor recommended a higher intake during prolonged winter hours and back to a regular 1000iu per day once days start to become longer.

Exercise was also recommended. I Have never dealt with SAD but some colleagues have and I got that info from our doctor before moving North. It might not be the solution, but it all helps with the symptoms.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/Psychonaut

As /u/linqua posted, you just experienced the Ganzfeld effect! Plus a little bit more.

There things called 'mind machines' and 'dream machines' which are specifically crafted for this kinda thing. They consist of glasses with LEDs on the inside of the lenses and headphones connected to a little piece of electronics which runs them.

Here's a popular one that's been around for a while:
http://www.amazon.com/MindPlace-Proteus-USB-Meditation-Machine/dp/B00061URFG

I've always wanted to try one, and you might have just convinced me to buy one or maybe make one. It would actually be a relatively simple project:

  • Raspberry Pi or Arduino
  • Ping pong balls, stick some LEDs in them, would need an additional chip to connect the LEDs to to interface with the Pi or Arduino
  • Headphones
  • Put it all in a box and wire some potentiometers (variable resistor knobs) to the device
  • Relatively simple software to drive it all (including synthesizing the binaural audio, which is very easy, you just decide on your target frequency X and then generate two sounds with freq Y and Z where Y-Z=X, the offset creates low frequency oscillations which the brain allegedly syncs to) and receive input from the pots
  • Put it in a small box

Here's one on MAKE, it doesn't include the sound part, and he made his own circuit with some chips:
    http://www.instructables.com/id/MAKE-a-mind-control-hypnosis-dream-machine-Cheap/?ALLSTEPS

Anyways yeah this would be a fun project :D

I’m going with this one from Amazon!

u/Penisbreathlikeroses · 2 pointsr/Biohackers

This one https://www.amazon.com/SGROW-Light-Therapy-660nm-Infrared/dp/B07MGBR4MN/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?keywords=redlight+therapy&qid=1557713621&s=gateway&sr=8-8. I think you can return it but double check. Give it a try for a few weeks and if it doesn’t do anything return it. Alibaba also have joov knockoffs for ~300 that are much larger from the same company.

Good luck

I use a Northern Light Technologies Boxelite.

Edited to add link.

I was actually looking at some of these alarm clocks a couple nights ago & found some different models: $131 and
$200.

u/viamediagirl · 2 pointsr/cfs

Ugh, that stinks. I assume you take Magnesium? I like the one I use, no GI issues and it’s not pricey. There’s no substitute for sunlight but the lamp is a real lifesaver. This is the one I use. It’s pricey but you can get them used too.

I really believe in this stuff, so I found you an example:

This is kind of the "traditional" therapy light. Don't buy this one, it's an unknown seller, but they have them at medical supply places, some insurance covers them too.

I have always struggled with sleep problems, try talking to a sleep doctor. If the doctor finds that you have a sleep disorder, that is covered by the ADA since sleep is a major life activity. Your employer must make a reasonable accommodation like flexible work hours or later shifts. (Just keep in mind that reasonable accommodation for one business may be prohibitive for another.)

I've struggled with sleep issues my whole life, too. I went to a doctor and these were her recommendations. I finally found a winning combination.

For what it's worth, I use this at work https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K08ZDBI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 after I use this in the morning while I get ready https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01553VBD6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also have a dawn simulator next to my bed.

Hey everyone, if you're interested, we just launched a 300W 60 LED panel. It's 660nm and 850nm wavelengths with switches for both, has a high irradiance (over 200mW/cm2 at the surface), a low EMF output, a cooling fan, and comes with a user manual, hanging kit, and door mount! We want to be a more affordable option for people, because we think a lot of the lights out there are overpriced. Feel free to check us out: Hooga 300W Red and Near Infrared Light Therapy Device

It looks sort of like this

I took it to work and just sat it on my desk. I work in a cubicle, so it didn’t really bother anyone

The natural light thing is big. Get a sun lamp/mood lamp if you don't get a lot of natural light at home or work. I take meds - I am on the severe end, and meds get me about 85% of the way to normal, but the above tips definitely help with the other 15%. A sun lamp makes all the difference in the world in the wintertime when there's not a lot of daylight and most days are grey anyway. This is the one I use.

u/AlarmingDrawing · 1 pointr/AskNYC

Asked a colleague and she swears by this one.

u/LAlbatross · 1 pointr/AlternativeAmazonVGF

I have the Sadellite (https://www.amazon.com/Northern-Light-Bright-Therapy-Beige/dp/B000YQNGII/ref=sr_1_14_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1537801974&sr=8-14&keywords=light+therapy+lamp) which is great. It's a bit bulky, but really effective. You can probably find it for cheaper somewhere else though. I think I bought mine for about 100$ CAD.

Those lamp aren't cheap, but they work wonders for me. Plus, I think I changed the bulbs only once in like 5 years

u/fvertk · 1 pointr/rheumatoid

Strange because I was just barely looking at http://www.amazon.com/Tendlite-Therapy-Joint-Pain-Relief/dp/B004QECAU4 .

A lot of anecdotal stories for this product but how well does it actually work? I have no idea. Some say you need more precise light therapy. For me, I just want to decrease nightly inflammation in my knees. Anyone have experience with that?

u/nintendo_dharma · 1 pointr/Supplements

Here is an expensive nicer one I LOVE:

300W Red Light Therapy Lamp Red... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RBRM15H?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Here is a much cheaper bulb that is great to start off with:

I’m no scientist but basically Red Light stimulates your mitochondria and helps the cells it comes in contact with perform better. Proven to heal skin faster, help pain, etc. The bright light is rewarding on its own, feels like your sitting in the morning sun. Terrific way to get started in gloomy days.

u/tuart · 1 pointr/battlestations

Whoops, my apologies. That's one of those natural sunlight lamps.

I'm prepared to not see much difference from the mouthwash, at least, for the lower gums, which was SRPed three weeks ago. But I'll still give it a shoot. I might actually start using this mouthwash right away to see if it helps the upper gums (still don't look totally healed from SRP 1 week ago). I'd use it right after the chlorhexidine mouthwash.... hopefully, they don't cancel each other out...

I've been considering an ultrasonic toothbrush and maybe even one of these light therapy devices, but I'm hesitant to splurge so much money on something that might not justify the investment.

The only reason I'd get an ultrasonic/infrared device would be just to see whether it can help stimulate bone/gum regeneration somehow, hence, why I wonder whether the investment is justified. For better plaque removal, I'd just try to master the technique with a manual toothbrush, which is what I'm already doing.

I'm still clueless about whether xylitol affects all bacteria indiscriminately or just some types...

u/KMMin14 · 1 pointr/Supplements

I typically do turn all lights off except for one on my night stand prior to bed, and read for 20 minutes to an hour. I've been looking at a few lamps on Amazon that are pretty cheap but have some good reviews.

I have this one by Northern Light Technology.

It's an expensive one, but I find it very helpful and I recommend it. It's definitely not as effective as real sunlight, but it is better than getting very little/no sunlight during these dark days.
