Don't freak out. This is more repetition of a poor understanding of cholesterol that has become deeply mired in conventional wisdom. If anything, incidence of AD is linked to carbohydrate-rich diets, especially in people who are either heterozygous or homozygous (strongest susceptibility) for the APOE4 allele.

Strongly suggest you take a look at:

The Alzheimer's Antidote

The End of Alzheimer's.

These are just a quick start. There are fascinating papers in the literature as well, but those can get challenging depending upon experience in reading professional papers.

Bottom line: modern diets are a profound mis-match for the human genome. Homo sapiens is smart enough to do really stupid things, like changing elements of our lifestyle at a pace far beyond the ability to adapt (genetically).

Since your boyfriend is so smart, buy him a copy of "Eat Rich, Live Long". https://www.amazon.com/Eat-Rich-Live-Long-Mastering/dp/1628602732

It makes a great case for why Keto works and the science behind it... It might just change his mind.

First, good on you for reaching out for help! And for taking your health seriously. I've always loved this quote from Lao Tzu: "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." That jog was your first step!

Second: eating. The FAQ has great resources on different types of diets you can adhere to, the most popular (and least complicated) is Counting Calories. I'd highly recommend looking into the South Beach Diet as a starting point. The book gives a lot of great information on why our bodies do what they do (crave "bad" foods, put on weight fast, etc). The book is only about $10, so it's a small investment that will give you a great start!

Third: exercising. Remember to start slow, don't expect to go out and run 20 miles when you've never run before. Check out the Couch-2-5K program (I'm a graduate, and it's just great). Also, look for access to a gym, or school weights area, and start weight lifting. Again, the FAQ has good resources for Exercising to check out.

When starting out, this can all feel really overwhelming. But don't give up! Part of the battle now is educating yourself in good eating habits, and exercise regiments that can help you get when you want to be! Be patient with yourself, and keep at it! GOOD LUCK!

> They based the study on Atkins' 1972 book rather than a more recent version... it's not clear why they chose to do that as it seems like dieters in 2011 would be more interested in a newer Atkins book like any of his 2003 books.

As far as I can tell this is a reference problem in the published paper. The paper explicitly references the title of the newer book:

> The LCHF group was instructed to follow the guidelines described in Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution [6] aiming to limit carbohydrate intake, and otherwise eat ad libitum

Atkins' New Diet Revolution actually is the newer/more updated one. However, if you look at reference 6 it says:

> R.A. Atkins, Dr. Atkins` Diet Revolution: The High Calorie Way to Stay Thin Forever, Bantam, 1972.

The original book is just called the Diet Revolution, New Diet Revolution actually is the more recent book that would have been pertinent at the time this was conducted in 2012.

This is actually worth pointing out to the journal and/or authors imo. I suspect they used the more recent book but have a reference error for reference 6.

Absolutely, in my personal opinion.

I've been Keto for 4 to 5 months now without counting calories OR a perfect fat/protein/net carbs ratio (roughly 70/20/10, near enough is good enough) for me otherwise I get overwhelmed by the detail around this and I find it counter-productive to my goals.

I have found it to be more helpful to identify the markers that matter to my physiology and actually monitor and test them regularly as I go with keto. So I care more about the results of the diet, if that makes sense.

Some approximate, recent results to date (coupled with 16:8 intermittent fasting daily.):

  • Reduced weight by 12%
  • Reduced waste size by 4 inches
  • Reduced TG by 40%
  • Increased HDL by 15%
  • Increased insulin sensitivity
  • Decreased glucose levels 20%

I'm on the journey just like everyone else, just sharing what's working for me; everyone is different. For example, if I eat a lot of cheese and animal-based saturated fats, my TG and weight goes up/plateaus (mono-unsaturated fats like avocado, olive oil, drive that down for me). Where for others it will go down. That's why testing diet against biomarkers are more important to me.

I have found Ivor Cummin's book most helpful on informing this and much more:

we do use almond flour a lot, my wife and i are following the keto in 28 book's meal plan (http://www.amazon.ca/Keto-28-Ultimate-Low-Carb-Weight-Loss/dp/1942411294/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1454085047&sr=8-31&keywords=keto+books) until we can figure it out on our own. a very good point on the eating out though i will have to go back and add all that in to do a true comparison!

The Youtube video of Gary Taubes speaking at the Walnut Creek (California) public library is probably the most approachable presentation I've seen. It's pretty much the same information as in his book, Why We Get Fat. Er, it's quite long as it's 10 segments. (I linked to a playlist which will play all 10 segments consecutively.)

Thanks for the heads up. Here's another one, "Low Carb Christmas Without the Ham: Easy Delicious Low Carb Vegetarian Appetizers, Main Dishes, Sides & Desserts"

OK it's vegetarian, but you can adapt the recipes, after all recipe books are for inspiration 😀

It might be worth getting the The Keto Reset Diet and Primal Endurance so you at least have the information to make a decision and set a game plan. I'm in a very similar situation as you are and I think Keto is worth doing.

u/alanthiana · 2 pointsr/keto

The Keto Diet - Leanne Vogel - she also has a podcast, if you like them.

Why We Get Fat - Gary Taubes

The Case Against Sugar - Gary Taubes

The Keto Reset Diet - Mark Sisson

The Ketogenic Bible - Jacob Wilson and Ryan Lowery

If you are looking for cookbooks, Maria Emmerich, Kyndra Holley, Carolyn Ketchum, and Amanda Hughes have great stuff. There's also a TON of sites for great keto recipes. Just let me know if you need some.

I bought a book on amazon that came with meal plans and recipes to get me started. My husband and I are big on tasty food, so bland plain foods would ruin a diet for us - the book has lots of yummy choices.

The Keto subreddit sidebar actually gives loads of info without having to hunt it all down.

In Atkin's book, it recommended 20gb for the induction phase (1-2 weeks).

After that you can raise it to 50-100g.

This book is amazing. I’m not vegetarian but was feeling like I wasn’t eating enough vegetables in my normal Keto Diet. It’s really sciencey in the beginning which I really like and then has lots of veggie recipes that I never would have thought of on my own.

There's a keto version of just about every dessert out there. If you are able to bake and cook and follow recipes, a good place to start is Carolyn Ketchum's Easy Keto Desserts. Also see Pinterest and /r/ketorecipes/. There are some really simple keto desserts out there that you don't even need to be much of a chef to make, and basically just involve mixing together 3-4 ingredients.

If you aren't someone who cooks or bakes, there are a lot of great keto sweets on Amazon, or you might even have a local bakery that does keto desserts. Also check out the Quest line of products to sate that sweet tooth, but those might be better for a cut or maintenance since all the protein and fiber will fill you up pretty quickly. Although all of this can get expensive quickly so you're better off cooking yourself if you make a lot of keto sweets.
