I just sparred MMA for the first time the other day and holy fuck is that another level of tiring. Never talking shit about a fighter gassing ever again.

One question: I found it pretty difficult to grapple in the fat twins shinguards. Though a part of that could be attributed to inexperience, would it be better to have the thinner MMA shin guards and use them both for MMA and Kickboxing?

i always used something like this for mma sparring but its a lot less padding then the big chunky boys

you do occasionally have to wash em, they get kinda stanky

I'd suggest buying some cheap cloth kick-pads and grabbing some kickpad covers from elucha.com; you'll get a pretty good look for under $50.

Regarding kickpads from elucha.com, I've owned two pairs: the ones I have now, which are pretty good but they don't sell anymore, and a pair of their typical solid black kickpads that had the fabric tear pretty easily (when I lent them to someone else! So they could have easily just been careless with them), but anyway, it's a small enough investment to try out the covers and the cheap cloth kickpads because you can always use the covers later - I used the cloth kickpads for about a year when I was working once a week (9 or so years ago) and they are durable as hell especially for the price.

Like Giraffasauras_Rexis said, you should take functionality into it as well - I use kickpads occasionally, but it's purely aesthetic as I never kick with my shin, so people watching carefully might find it a nonsensical choice on my part. Lately I've been preferring just my boots, and I'm pretty sure I have the same pair of costume boots you're talking about :D

Im in the same boat. Im 27 and want to keep skating as long as I can, so I'd rather be fully padded and look like an old dork than end up hobbling around on busted shins and ankles.

Found these padded guards on amazon and think ill give em a try if there arent any better suggestions:

When I speak of 'soft' shin guards I'm referring to this style of shin guards. They are mostly useless outside of this supplemental usage for protecting an injury, and quality isn't hugely important here.

For more robust shin guards, Top King, Twins and Hayabusa are brands with good reputations.

Keep an eye out for deals. I bought Fairtex when I couldn't find a better deal and I bought Title MMA when they had deals. You will need: boxing gloves, mma sparring gloves, shin guards, headgear, mouth guard, cup.

headgear - I bought fairtex. There are different styles of headgear. I like what I got because of the padding across the chin and the absence of a nose guard (limits visibility).

boxing gloves - I bought 14 ox fairtex gloves from my instructor on sale for $65. Boxing gloves are different than bag gloves. Cheaper ones will come apart at the seams. The ones with velcro are easier than laces to put on and off.

mma sparring gloves - I bought fairtex. Notice how "mma sparring gloves" have more padding than the competition 4 oz gloves but less padding than boxing gloves. The distribution of the padding can vary. Mine have all the padding on the knuckles (great for standup) while others have more padding on the sides (for hammer fist punches on the ground). My gym has a "ground striking" class where we are tought how to use punches to set up submissions and use clinches on the ground to set up strikes. You can do this with boxing gloves but like everything else, at some point you might want different gloves.

shin guards - i found a deal on title mma and they have held up great. Some shin guards have less padding but I've never had a problem with mine. My shin guards have two big velcro straps that go across the calf. They stay put for the most part but maybe once a round i'll pause for a second to re-adjust (this is normal in sparring and your partner will do the same). The other option besides velcro straps is a sleeve that you slide your leg in to. This holds the shin guard in place better for grappling but it is a pain to get on.

I sprang for the online offer. It'll be a day before I know if I got them.

Shin guards are next. Do you have tips? I seen a brand that was like a sock with integrated padding. No hard plate though. Ten bucks top seller on amazon. What I see most use at the gym are the kind with a velcro strap on the top, on the bottom, and an elastic band under the foot. Hard plate i think on most, one guy has the sleeve kind. I thought the sleeve type holds better, because he puts his on, once. Where the hard plate kind, their velcro is coming loose, the plate shifts around; various brands.

This is what I had in mind:

As someone who has gone through a half dozen shin guards simply because I can't find a pair I'm comfy with, I'd recommend finding a place where you can try a couple different pairs on, even if that means you go to another gym for a day or something.

Out of everything, I tend to like these the most, simply because they are the best at staying straight on my legs. The downside is that they make me slip from time to time and tend to get worn out after a few months.

That being said, everyone else in the world hates the Everlast ones, so I can't really recommend them. Everyone's leg shape, style, and training is different, so you're really best off trying some on before you order anything online.

I'm debating between the FightGear style and the Hyabusa Kanpeki.

The Kanpeki is just dead sexy, but will it keep my face dead sexy? My sparring partner has 70lbs on me. The dude is a friggin tank, semi-pro MMA guy whose background is in Thai boxing. He hits like a truck.

I'm getting new gear because I had the amateur style competition head gear and I've taken one too many in practice. I don't want busted lips for fights.

At same time, I've heard the bar can make it difficult to breath. Will the Kanpeki style prevent contact with my face? We generally use 16oz gloves but sometimes we opt for the smaller mma style stuff.

I've had it happen on multiple occasions with one being probably the most pain I've ever experienced with maybe the exception of my appendix almost bursting.

The issue is they take fucking forever to heal up. And if you go to class there is a 100% chance that someone will ding it just a tiny bit and it will make it scream.

I ended up buying a pair of these. They are bulky but for what you're using them for it's exactly what you need. I even wrapped a bit of cloth around the area before I put the shinguard on just for added protection.

I wear these right now and I like them a lot. Took a few times wearing them for them to fit comfortably / break them in, but after that, they've lasted quite a while, especially for how light they were. Like them better than my Fairtex shin guards to be honest, even though they were much cheaper.

Ok guy that has no clue what the fuck he's talking about.
Do you also use these when you spar?
