Body spray is probably short lived, not complex, and meant to be sprayed in-store and smell appealing, therefore selling on the spot.

Cologne, and by extension good colognes, are supposed to give off a signature scent throughout the day. The warmth of your body helps to disperse the aroma and subtle scents, which is why many such as myself will spray on their neck and wrists, where the body is warm and exposed.

Frankly, a body spray will likely have no subtlety, and just stick to your clothes and 'reek', even if it's a pleasant smell, it has no depth. Colognes, such as those with hints of pepper, rosemary, citrus, oak etc, are sprayed on the body and are meant to give a 'character' scent.

The combo I rely on is old spice classic deodorant, and a spray of HeWood on the neck and wrists: http://www.amazon.com/He-Wood-Dsquared2-For-Spray/dp/B002XQ1T6I

'Fragrance Notes: Violet Leaves, vegetal Amber, Violet Blossoms, Musk, Aquatic Note, Cedarwood, White Fir, Vetiver'

I smell amazing.

Soap-Irish Spring. It's clean, simple, and masculine. It's not overpowering and you're a man. Use soap. No poof and cute lil bottle of bodywash for you.

Deodorant- Degree original baby powder. Degree had one product when they launched, and it was perfect. Then suddenly they split their line into gender-based scents. That was bullshit, because the powder scent was low-key, smelled fresh, and it worked. I still buy this, I don't care that it's pink. It works and it doesn't reek of "please smell how awesomely masculine my armpits are!"

Cologne- Daily use: Black Walnut. It smells masculine and deep, it's been my go-to for a while now. Everyone loves it. For nighttime or heading out after dark, try Slate. It's stronger, a little muskier, and smells like you mean business.

Shampoo is a little trickier depending on the kind of hair you have, and how long it is. You don't need to wash your hair every day, but you should be rinsing with conditioner every time you shower. Don't cheap out here, spend a few extra duckets and get some good conditioner. I use Ouidad for curly hair, and it does the job. For me, it's worth the $ for the job that it does.

Axe/Lynx should never be used under any circumstance. That's right, never. It smells atrocious to men and women alike. Never? Really never? Yes, never. Even if you were just sprayed by a skunk and the only cleanser available is Axe/Lynx, you should stick with water and your bare hands before using it. Because you'll still smell like skunk, buy you'll also smell like a axe-using douchebag who was just sprayed by a skunk. That's wretched stink times TWO. It's better to use no soap at all than a soap that smells like you're a drone to marketing campaigns and think that overpowering juvenile stink is actually going to get you laid.

I was actually asked that very question about 10 days ago. I've copied the response below:

Okay, so I'll answer the question in two parts:

Aftershaves

This is a tough one. There aren't that many fougère aftershaves that are both good and inexpensive. The best I can recommend would be, in order of price:

Antonio Puig Agua Lavanda (ignore the literature and just trust me on this)

Pour un Homme de Caron Aftershave Balm, which is both soothing to the skin and one of the greatest lavender fragrances ever built. It's been a little battered by time and reformulation, but is still a masterpiece. Simple, unobtrusive lavender, vanilla, and clean musk.

D.R. Harris Arlington is one of the most revered fougères in shaving, though I must confess that I'm not terribly fond of its sweetness. I find it rather too lemony for me, which gives it an air of lemon pez.

Perfumes

I feel rather odd saying this but the absolute best compliment to Imperiale, in my view at least, is not a fougère at all, but a leather fragrance called Knize ("kuh-nee-sha") Ten. It's a dark, dry, old-style leather, the preferred fragrance of James Dean, and one of the most richly complex fragrances I've ever encountered. It's gorgeous stuff, jointly created by two of the greatest perfumers in history. That said, it's an extraordinarily divisive fragrance, so I'd order a sample of it if you think it might be for you. If you need recommendations for sample dealers, just let me know.

If you're looking for lighter and cleaner, I can recommend four brilliant fougères that would work beautifully with Imperiale:

  1. Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel: A slightly peculiar but eerily beautiful fougère with heavy emphasis on petitgrain and iris. Bitter and powdery, with rich oak moss base notes, and one of my favorite fragrances of all time. It's dirt cheap to boot.

  2. Penhaligon's English Fern: Perhaps the most "classic" of the fougères on this list, though it's heavier on clover and anise than most other fougères I've encountered, which really plays up the "soapy green" aspect of such scents. Extremely popular in the shaving world and very much a "mature" fragrance; I never feel old enough when I wear it.

  3. Azzaro Pour Homme: The only aromatic fougère on my list, this is one of the great masterpieces of perfumery and so historically significant that there are six individual perfumers who claim to created it. It carries a slightly bitter caraway note and has a bit of a rough beginning, but transforms into a beautiful, airy fougère within about 15 minutes. It's quite inexpensive, especially for what it is, and a little goes a long way.

  4. Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur: The "Gentleman's Handkerchief" is my absolute favorite perfume of all time (and, coincidentally, the one I wore to my law school graduation). It was created in 1905 as the brighter, dirtier cousin to Aimé Guerlain's masterpiece Jicky. It carries a lot of lemon and a considerable dose of civet, which turns to a beautiful velvety power on my skin. There's really no replacement for smelling it in person, but it's unfortunately very difficult to come by in US department stores or even perfume specialty shops, so I recommend ordering a sample of it (and Jicky, if you're interested in the perfume that made Guerlain famous).

    Hope that helps.

I use CK One as a casual cologne, it's really good anywhere. The only downfall is that it's not very long lasting scent wise, you'll probably get about 4-5 hours. It's a classic scent that is citrus-y and woods-y at the same time. Personally, it reminds me so much of summer. Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Paris-fragrance-One-Toilette-Spray/dp/B014G6T220/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1449206289&sr=1-1&keywords=ck+one

I occasionally use this in the Winter: Salvatore Ferragamo F Ferragamo Black. Jeremy Fragrance says it better than I ever could so here's the link where he describes it: https://youtu.be/ifIhdZdW3EI?t=59s

Here's the link to Ferragamo Black: http://www.amazon.com/Salvatore-Ferragamo-Black-Toilette-3-4-Ounce/dp/B002C8ZX9Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1449206506&sr=1-1&keywords=Salvatore+Ferragamo+F+Ferragamo+Black+By+Salvatore+Ferragamo+For+Men+Eau+De+Toilette+Spray%2C+3.4-Ounce+%2F+100

There are a lot of good cheaper quality colognes out there. Nautica Blue, Curve for men, or even on the higher end of things Jean Paul for Men.

However, what I'd recommend is that you head over to your local Nordstroms cologne section. In most Nordstroms you will find little sample vials which you can fill up with any kind of cologne you desire. From the $150 bottles, to the $40, doesn't matter, just sprits it into the sample sprayer and use it next time you want to impress. Not only that, but if it's slow and the sales guy is cool chances are you can walk out of there with about half a months worth of cologne. Just make sure you bring a fine point felt pen/sharpie to write on the sample tubes so you know what to buy if you find one that smells fantastic on yourself. Good Luck!

I got my repellent gurl.

u/ignoramus · 2 pointsr/fragrance

I think you're not getting any takers because you're pricing it a little high for a 'used' bottle. One can get a new-in-wrapped-box 4.2oz bottle on Amazon for $34.50 and free shipping. If you priced it a little lower, or had extras to add in, you'd probably see more activity.

That said, it's a quality frag, and if I didn't have 75% of my canister plus a sealed backup bottle, I'd probably try to negotiate with you. As for anyone else reading, I'd recommend it. A nice barbershop-style masculine.

u/VickLaginas · 2 pointsr/fragrance

Both of these are winners and you can definitely blind buy these.

F by Salvatore Ferragamo - Love this fragrance for night and the sillage is moderate but it's also very long lasting (5-6 hours).

Mont Blanc Starwalker - I think this is one of the most underrated fragrances for men. It's refreshing and I would definitely wear this during the day or at night.

u/Live-On-Pool · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Here are some of my favorites. They are not that expensive and smells amazing.

u/hearnrumors · 2 pointsr/TheVeneration

My truck's official scent is Banana Republic Black Walnut.

According to reviews, it is: Cedar x Tobacco x Whiskey.

I couldn’t find a deodorant stick but here’s the cologne: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0731Q7VDQ/

It's seems most guys don't care about how they smell. I didn't either as long as I didn't smell bad, until high school someone asked me if I smoked. I didn't, my mother would smoke cigs inside. After that I made her smoke outside and eventually quit. Always would make sure my clothes smelled good and that I always wore some spray to smell better. You get complimented quite often if you smell good.

If any guys are looking for something this one is my favorite.

icanhelp

Between SV and OTD,I much prefer SV. OTD just doesn't dry for me. However, I HATE the shrinkage I get from SV so I have been on the hunt for something better for ages. I was using Poshe for a long time and finding comparable to SV but I don't get the shrinkage. Mine get stringy like SV towards the end of the bottle though, which I don't like. I have been using NailNations 45 second topcoat and really like it but they don't have a big bottle.
Poshe sells a 6oz bottle, though

This tiger looking thing: https://www.amazon.com/Hardy-Men-Toilette-Spray-3-4-Ounces/dp/B001FWXMFM

The perfume samplers might be a good idea indeed! Didn't know they had that.

They did go to some trouble to fake the bottle, too, which I take as a good sign :)

Lalique Encre Noir. A dead ringer for Chanel Sycomore and dead sexy in the winter.

Bonus - good for a college student budget. https://www.amazon.com/Lalique-Encre-Noire-Homme-Spray/dp/B001FORJXQ

Lacoste Essential is my goto cologne. It's pretty subtle, but smells awesome.

u/CampBenCh · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I use Lacsote Essential and I have never had complaints- but I've also not really had compliments. Honestly I've gotten more compliments that I smell good just by coming out of the shower or wearing deodorant. It's like I spent $70 on cologne and the only thing that makes me smell good to the ladies is fricken Irish Springs soap.

u/truckboat_truck · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

just because I was in a similar situation yesterday i'll throw this out there as I am still on the fence.

He Wood Cologne by Dsquared2

doubt it's what you had in mind, but just in case.

u/WaterSlime · 1 pointr/HelpMeFind

Only thing I was able to find was the Amazon page which is not available so my guess is it's discontinued. Just maybe they changed packaging as the modern bottles seem cylindrical. The Amazon page states it has cedar wood notes so maybe you can use that to find something similar

This seems like the product for you, 10$ for a bottle that will last you a good amount of time and has amazing reviews!

Here's the Trump Fragrance in Amazon

If you like The American Blend this is the scent it is based on.

I also use Chrome Azzaro as it goes good with all the XXX stuff from RazorRock.

I got a bottle of Creed Adventus for xmas. I would never spend $400 on cologne for myself. But It does go great with the Fine Platinum.

As a guy in that age range, who has gone cologne shopping with not one, but 2 girls at the same time, heres what I wear:

Spring/Summer - Lacoste

Cooler weather - Hugo Boss

Other Cooler weather - Gucci Pour Homme II

I will say that I wear the Lacoste a little heavier, and the Gucci very light - when I wear them. I'm favoring the HB right now a lot.

Realize, though, that not every cologne matches every guy. You need to find something you like, and I do recommend finding something a girl likes off your skin. There are pheromones at play here.
