I went last year for the first time since about 2002. To put it lightly, I was scared.

It turns out that my fear of dentists for the previous 16 years was a solid and effective motivator for me to take very good care of my teeth. No cavities. I waited until AFTER the cleaning to tell them how long it had been, and they said it looked like I had been getting cleanings every 6 months. Now, whenever I go in every 6 months, they tell me I consistently have the cleanest teeth of any of their clients (maybe they are lying to make me feel good).

My regimen for the last 17 years:

If you're really worried, buy a travel-sized mouth wash bottle (like this), empty it and replace it with your solution and some blue food dye.

Probably just a dry mouth, try using something like this and see if it helps. It's basically artificial saliva. If it's dry then it isn't thinning out your saliva enough so it'll feel thicker, and it could also cause some of the juices from whatever you ate/drank to stick to your mouth in place of the saliva and make it feel thicker too.

You could try a kids' toothpaste with stannous fluoride which also helps prevent sensitivity.

I understand the mental health aspect of this and can understand why the psychiatrist was recommended. That being said, I also have family members going through different types of mental health disorders that absolutely will not see a psychiatrist or doctor.

If the bulimia does continue, I would have a few recommendations:

  1. decrease your acid intake
a)no coffee, substitute for tea if you'd like
b)limit acidic fruits such as oranges and tomatoes (yes, a fruit ;-p)
c)limit sugar intake- obviously dentists will say this, but it is true. Sugar is the source of food for bacteria that secrete acid into your mouth and on your teeth, decreasing the pH of your saliva (xylitol gum is a good alternative to sugar).
2)use fluoride toothpaste-prescription from your dentist
    a)Prevident is a good example
    3)use fluoride mouthrinse
a)piggy-backing off of a previous post of a peer from today, this should be a good example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H1HZFUO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_.5PTzbAF3NWP3
    4)drink a lot of water
a)water is a natural buffer (around pH of 7) for the stomach and saliva
5)ask your dentist for a fluoride tray you can keep on your teeth for a half an hour
a)use the fluoride toothpaste for this, pea sized drops would be sufficient

https://www.amazon.com/ACT-Total-Soothing-Mouthwash-Ounce/dp/B00KPX5UYI That's what I use.
I started using it per my momma's advice (she's my dental hygienist). I had my first three cavities recently, at 30 yrs old, and I'm almost positive it was due to a dry mouth from vaping.

There are also dry mouth lozenges. Saliva is the best thing to keep bacteria away from your teeth, gum, and cheek tissue. If you don't have a lot of saliva, you have to try to steer clear of acidic things and sugary things and drink more water to make up for the lack of saliva.

If dry mouth continues to be a problem, your dentist can give you or recommend stronger products/medicines for it.

Yes you definitely can use a pump bottle. Listerine even sell the pump separately so you can put on on a bottle of mouthwash. https://www.amazon.com/Listerine-Pump-1-5-Mouthwash-Bottle/dp/B00SZD9MEY

Here is my routine with items and products that work for me.

DAILY Morning:

  1. Scrape tongue; rinse with water; brush teeth for 2 minutes; floss; rinse 1 minute with alcohol-free mouthwash and then gargle 30 seconds with a little more mouthwash; brush tongue with vegetable glycerin.
  2. Shower with warm- not hot- water; shampoo (every other day) and condition (every day); wash pits, feet, in between toes, crotch and crack with antibacterial soap and washcloth; wash rest of body with loofah and body wash of choice.
  3. Wash face with warm water and a gentle face cleanser; shave; apply witch hazel to face, neck, and forehead; apply moisturizer with SPF
  4. Dry off completely, especially pits, in between toes, crotch, and crack; apply Fresh Balls , deodorant, foot cream or powder , and hand cream (as necessary).

    DAILY Night:

  5. Step 1 of morning routine
  6. Wash hands and clean under finger nails * with antibacterial soap
  7. Wash face with warm water and face cleanser; apply moisturizer.

WEEKLY Sat or Sun: (In addition to daily routines)

  8. Use a face scrub in the shower, gently, especially to the areas you will be shaving; clean under toenails with a nail brush*
  9. Soak feet, particularly in summer and/or you have to wear work boots;
  10. While feet are soaking trim fingernails * and clean under them with pointed end of a nail file*, carefully; dry feet.
  11. Trim toenails* and clean under them with nail file*.
  12. Check nose, ears and eyebrows for any hairs that need to be trimmed or anything in between eyebrows that needs to be removed.
  13. Shave back of neck and around ears

    * Use separate tools for hands and feet to avoid spreading any potential fungus to your hands

    BI-WEEKLY Sat or Sun:

  14. Manscape after the morning routine.

I have a few resources that have specific guides, I will post them later. I hope this is somewhat helpful and if you have any questions, let me know.

I use this, from ACT:
https://www.amazon.com/ACT-Anticavity-Fluoride-Mouthwash-18-Ounce/dp/B001349SQ4?th=1

They have some other mouthwash that I hate, so be careful:
https://www.amazon.com/ACT-Restoring-Anticavity-Mouthwash-Strengthen/dp/B01L4N8NT6/

I'm honestly not sure what the difference is supposed to be. My only criteria for mouthwash are alcohol-free and with fluoride, which these both theoretically meet, but the second one was a terrible experience (more CPC, I guess.)

There are probably other brands/formulations that are okay, too, I stopped looking once I found this one.

They sell it on Amazon for $25. Well worth it in my opinion as it really is better than every other option out there. I don't use it everyday but do use it frequently if I'm going out and want to make sure my breath is perfect.

as someone in a similar boat, look into this mouthwash

but don't buy it on amazon where it's crazy high priced, just look in a cvs or smth. it does NOT taste good but it does seem to help a lot. there are other OTC mouthwashes that are also very strong against gingivitis but be wary of any containing chlorhexidine as an ingredient, as it frequently causes tooth staining. a dentist might prescribe it as a two week course, in that case you might see if you can have a cleaning scheduled soon after to combat the staining.

Yeah I think it's still a pretty new thing, I could only find a couple with arginine in that are sold widespread, like this mouthwash and toothpaste (I swear I'm not a Colgate shill, I just did my PhD on this stuff...!)

u/Colosssus · 1 pointr/popheads

you all would greatly benefit from:

  1. oil pulling (cures gum disease and whitens teeth within a month)
  2. purchasing a calcium, zinc, magnisium, vitamin k2 and vitamin d supplements (remineralizes teeth)
  3. cutting down on the sugar, brush down on every meal (removing the bacteria)
  4. read a book called "how to heal tooth decay" (google it).
  5. Purchasing this and this

essentially what is happening is your teeth are deficient of the nutrients to rebuild the enamel of the cavity and or your mouth is highly acidic (due to sugary foods [with over 15,000 chemicals that are not listed on the packaging of most products] that you are eating) leading to tooth decay. you can correct it by doing what is listed above.!

this stuff works and will heal/correct the cavities! hope this helps!

ACT Braces Care Ant-Cavity Fluoride Mouthwash, Clean Mint, 18 Ounce (Pack of 3) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00U1RYBL6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FkSxDbVVJH7ZQ though any good fluoride mouthwash that’s not a whitening one would work.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! It's extremely helpful. That's really good to know about white flour--I'm pretty good about using whole grains when I cook, but I could definitely work on avoiding white flour more when purchasing prepared food.

Just to check--is the "Smart Rinse" this Listerine product, or something else?

And thanks, too, for the advice about taking things in stages! I think when I first went into the dentist I was somewhat overanxious to get everything done quickly, so it's good to know that it's ok to space some of the major restorative work out over time.

I use the best mouthwash on the market.
