Not a parent, but I'm a neonatologist with RA, so I spend a lot of time with newborns and have a couple of ideas! First, register for baby clothes that don't have tons of snaps! Those cute little outfits with a million snaps are impossible when my hands are flaring. I find the onesies with zippers (like this) much easier. I'm also a big fan of sleep sacks because they make it super easy to get newborns snug and swaddled, and I've never met a newborn who doesn't like them. Also, I don't have personal experience with them, but I have friends who've used a co-sleeper as a safe way to have a newborn within reach while sleeping but still in a safe sleep environment, and I would think it would be really helpful for still being able to care for a baby when just getting out of bed is hard. Good luck!!

Cosleeping just seems dangerous. A few months ago my husband's cousin woke up to two screaming parents in the next apartment over. Apparently the wife got up for work and the husband rolled over in bed. He ended up suffocating their baby. Such a tragedy that could have been prevented.

We are planning to use something like this: Mika Micky Bedside Sleeper https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J232RV4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LtRMDb7DQA4PS

First time posting here in Baby Bumps, but I’ve been a long time commenter/fan of this sub. Currently 38+6 and a FTM. I LOVE seeing everyone’s nurseries and am so excited to share ours! Had so much fun putting the nursery together.

Here are some of the things we got that I love in our nursery:

  1. Birch tree removable wallpaper: NuWallpaper NU1650 Birch Tree Peel and Stick Wallpaper https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q00PA40/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IgYADbV0S2SB6

  4. Birch tree stump laundry bag: Jacone Stylish Tree Stump Shape Design Storage Basket Cotton Fabric Washable Cylindric Laundry Hamper with Rope Handles, Decorative and Convenient for Kids Bedroom https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M6DVUMJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wiYADb71SJQHE

  5. Woodland Animals Crib bedding set - Sweet Jojo Designs https://www.buybuybaby.com/store/product/sweet-jojo-designs-woodland-toile-crib-bedding-collection/238019?keyword=sweet-jojo-woodlands-crib

I know we will probably have to adjust things in the nursery once the baby comes and he gets older (I’ve seen plenty of moms comment on here how they laugh at some of the nurseries because they’ll eventually get wrecked or puked on or whatever) but for right now, I absolutely love it. I wanted to have a lush, forest feel...with dragons!

Good luck to all the moms out there. I’m so excited to become a mom myself. :)

Our kids use these sleep seahorses every night and it slowly starts dying and it's not bad at first but I keep forgetting to change the batteries, and am only reminded at bedtime after they've been tucked in and don't want to go through the process of fixing it at that moment.

Eventually it gets down to like 1/2 speed and I do feel really guilty about making them go to sleep in a horror movie but I really don't want to interrupt the bed-time routine, specifically for my 2 year old by having to go down stairs, find a #1 phillips screw driver, replace the batteries, and run back up stairs. I'm totally in the running for dad of the year. Like really... do they know it's supposed to signify something bad is about to happen?

I have the exact same problem and have been wondering the same thing. I need a bedside table to hold my glasses, at least. For now, I've decided to try just having the bassinet a bit further down too. I figured that I could change it, if it isn't working out. Another solution would to get something that hangs on the wall that can hold most of this stuff, and just move your side table out of the way temporarily. Some options might look like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Organizer-Hanging-Storage-Pockets-Bathroom/dp/B077G1SQN2/ref=sr_1_18?crid=23483R1I9U7B5&keywords=hanging%2Borganizer%2Bwith%2Bpockets&qid=1555174344&s=gateway&sprefix=hanging%2Borgan%2Caps%2C224&sr=8-18&th=1

This could hold a phone, a water bottle, and tissues. You could even clip a light to it. This is my back up plan until I can think of something that works better.

Congrats and good luck!

An assortment of thoughts and questions for today:

Formula smell question: We use Similac Sensitive Non-GMO. If he doesn't drink it all right away, it develops a foul smell within maybe 15 minutes. Is this true of other formulas? Any recommendations?

Post-partum nausea? Does anyone else get occasional bouts of post-partum nausea? I get it when I swim, e.g. when I do cardiovascular exercise. After about 25 minutes I start to feel sick. It feels very similar to when I was pregnant. Maybe hormonal?

Shout out to this mobile. We put it up last night and I thought my baby might hyperventilate with excitement. It was like Sue getting a surprise.

We got this one for the living room:
Graco Pack 'n Play Playard Snuggle Suite LX, Abbington https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PTL0S3Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_soq1AbDCZAW60

We used every part of it and had no regrets. Using it for number two in less than 50 days.

For the bedroom we went with something like this: Arm's Reach Concepts Mini Ezee 2-in-1 Bedside Bassinet - Natural https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ITQOV0Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9qq1AbDM1GH32

Someone gifted us the Baby Deedee Sleep Nest http://www.amazon.com/Deedee-Sleep-Sleeping-Medium-Months/dp/B003FZPD1I before our son was born. It's been the best! It's cozy but not so warm that he overheats. We do footie pjs or long sleeves/long pants pjs underneath and he's always the right temperature in the house. We keep the thermostat at 67.

u/virtual_six · 4 pointsr/BabyBumps

I loved the Graco ones with my daughter and I plan on getting this one for baby. http://www.amazon.com/Graco-Playard-Newborn-Napperstation-Manor/dp/B00H8MRDU8/ref=sr_1_7?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1413125197&sr=1-7&keywords=graco+pack+n+play

I don't plan on using the newborn napper, but the changing table feature is great. Since we plan on using this in our bedroom and having baby sleep in it until about 6 months, I am totally loving the additional storage underneath. On most of these, the raised mattress is firm and very comfortable, and you can also buy a mattress. We might do this just to keep the pack n play itself in good condition, as we plan on having one more after this baby.

u/RxRobb · 4 pointsr/BabyBumps

Wife and I bought this and it’s all we have been using for 8 months https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J232RV4/ref=cm_sw_r_oth_api_i_0TkYDbPRF2AEX

u/cmcg1227 · 3 pointsr/parentsofmultiples

I'm not sure if they should be on the pillows - crib mattresses are very firm for a reason, and the pillows seems too soft/fluffy. I would just put them directly on the bed if I were you.

I would also be careful putting them too close together - the reason I say this is because you wouldn't want one to get his face stuck against the swaddle of the other and suffocate because he couldn't move. Is it possible to keep one twin on one side of you and the other on the opposite side?

Another option would be to get these co-sleeper's which would keep the twins in your bed, but separated somewhat. It also allows them to have that really firm mattress. I'm not sure what two of those would look like in a queen bed though :-/

A third option would be to get these side-car co-sleepers and put them on either side of your bed. You didn't mention a second parent, so I suppose this would only work if it is only you in the bed. Perhaps you could combine the co-sleeper that goes in the bed with this sidecar option and have one in each? And honestly while your twins are small they might both fit in the sidecar. Once they are bigger, there are fewer risks with co-sleeping so it won't be such a big issue to have them in bed with you. Its really just those first few months that are so worrisome (and they are honestly just worrisome no matter what - whether or not they are in your bed!).

Good luck and I hope you find a safe and convenient sleeping arrangement for your and your adorable little guys!

Ok. I know this one take batteries but it turns off automatically after 30 minutes. We've had one for a couple months now, use it every day, and still haven't had to change the AAs yet. It's on long enough that my babies play for a minute and then conk out watching it. The animals face down and it spins. Can be played with music or no music. Also, it can attach to anything. I ordered one for each babe and am considering a third so it can stay in the car for outings. By far this is the most useful piece of non-essential baby gear we bought.

my wife and I used a cosleeper that attached to the side of our bed, so it was like our kids were in our bed, but they were not actually IN our bed. Our particular model was this one: https://www.amazon.com/Arms-Reach-Concepts-Bedside-Bassinet/dp/B01ITQOV0Q/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1504464066&sr=8-1&keywords=arms+reach+cosleeper

u/ElsieSnuffin · 3 pointsr/Parenting

Both my son & my daughter used this thing to fall asleep for naps & bedtimes. It plays music quietly enough, and in the same order, and has these weird bubbling sounds behind the music, and turns itself off after a few minutes, but is easy enough for them to push & turn back on again if they want.

Alternatively, you can download apps with "Sleep Stories" which are just little bedtime stories told aloud in a very calm, quiet, measured vocal style that's kind of meditative and conducive to sleep!

u/theonewiththetits · 3 pointsr/raisedbynarcissists

You can actually get your hands on a Co-Sleeper, if it makes you feel better. My EMom used one with my youngest brother. They're like bassinets you strap to the side of your bed, so you can't roll into them, but you can easily reach out and touch the baby. (Esp good for breastfeeding moms who don't want to get up.)

This is one on Amazon.

I had this in my daughter’s room (not the crib) and she had to have it to fall asleep bc it played soothing music. Once she got old enough, she loved being able to turn it on herself in her crib. My son had the monkey one and he used his until he was about 2.

Have you tried checking out one of these ?

Baby’s arms are up by their face and not to their sides. Also, the little arm parts zip off and you can take one off at a time and do it after they fall asleep so the transition doesn’t interfere with them falling asleep. I found that if my LO had one arm out of a regular swaddle she would just wrestle her way out of the entire thing and then cry, probably because she got cold and her reflex woke her. I eventually gave up and figured she hated being swaddled, but I liked this sack while it lasted!

Omg this has been wonderful! We transitioned from the magic Merlin suit to it and it’s been fantastic! And they make several thicknesses for weather.

No pillows or big blankets until 1 year, but my DD sleeps with this thin little security blanket that she LOVES! It's super breathable so even if it's bunched up by her face she can still breathe. She loves to hold on to it and cuddle with it and rub against her face, etc. Can't recommend enough.

u/RHINOHORNINMYBUMHOLE · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

YOU'RE AWESOME for this. I can't figure out if something is prime eligible or not thought :(((

u/cherryrc · 2 pointsr/BabyBumps

My daughter's first winter (she was 6 months old in December that year) we got her a Baby Deedee sleep nest which is like a wearable duvet blanket. She started sleeping better immediately, it has a nice weight to it like a real blanket instead of a normal sleep sack. We loved that thing. She wore it until she was 14 months old and started getting her arms out of it. We just changed what she wore underneath it. In the summer with the A/C on it was just a onesie, in the winter it was long sleeve PJs.

u/craigjitsu · 2 pointsr/bjj

Technically it's not a pineapple. :)

I think people always want to go for themed newborn things but I'm not one to advocate for that. Sure, you can get them a gi themed onesie or something of the sort, but speaking as a new parent myself that may not be the ideal item for them. Everyone is different but the things that have held the most value to my wife and I, aside from some basics at the very beginning, are the people who get the "these are the toys my kids loved" gifts or, even better, people who have offered to babysit when we're ready even if it's just so we can get some rest.

My standard gift set to new parents, based on things that everyone I have known over the years have loved, are:

Happiest Baby on the Block

Fisher Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse, which is also available in blue

Travel sleep sheep

Sophie

A gift for the parents

Co-sleeping is a hot topic, particularly regarding safety. If you're in the U.S., the AAP is going to advise against co-sleeping; however, many parents still do it to varying degrees. The risk is up to you-- if you do want to co-sleep, consider devices that may lower risk of hurting your baby (noting that nothing is absolute).

in-bed device : something like this would be placed in bed, but has hard, sturdy sides that would most likely prevent you from unconsciously rolling onto baby.

side-car bassinet/sleeper : something like this is going to have baby on a separate sleep surface that you cannot roll onto, yet it comes right up to your bed and provides similar closeness.

If you're considering co-sleeping, please take the time to research safety guidelines, SIDs statistics, and other credible, well-researched resources for relevant information.

A week at the most. We did it where where you go in and comfort every 5 minutes night one, 10 minutes night two and three, 15 night four, etc. Buying a shusher and this giraffe helped a lot as they gave my son comfort and now he knows when the shusher and the giraffe come on it’s time to sleep.

Where I literally get everything ever. Amazon! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00W89SX2S/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1492140247&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=developmental+mobile&dpPl=1&dpID=51NS6yUJv7L&ref=plSrch

I really like it because you can swap the images as baby grows. They start out as black and white geometrical shapes and progress to colors and more complex shapes (houses/fish). Plus one of the images is a black and white baby face which he freaking loves. He's always smiling and squealing at the baby.

We divided our living room in half using a play yard. The room was 10ft long and we figured out if we just kept the 2 end pieces of the play yard at 90 degrees, it stayed up no problem, even with climbing and standing. We had this one, it was great and could be put back into an octagon easily when needed.

To my knowledge the actual conditions are still hotly debated with both sides claiming the other side is lying, with some even saying they were drinking from toilets and people fighting over legitimacy. And personally I don't like saying that people being kept in a room being called a cage because the walls are chain link. Hang in there, mama! We definitely went through a sleep regression around 4 months too and it passed with time! I'd recommend sticking with a set bedtime routine and keeping any of her comfort items (i.e., the paci) or you won't know what's working and what isn't. As for naps, our LO didn't have a strict nap schedule at that age, we just let him sleep whenever/however long he needed to and only woke him up if his last nap was getting too close to bedtime. CIO can work to help babies go to sleep at bedtime, but is not very effective for middle-of-the-night wake-ups.

Some tips that helped us:

  • Frequent feeds in the evening (every 90 mins) to make sure he went down with a full tummy (adding formula could potentially upset her tummy),

  • Our LO has great fine motor skills, so we put extra pacifiers in his crib for him to find in the night (he uses the Soothies which are soft so it doesn't hurt if he rolls onto them),

  • White noise (just an app on my phone), seems to help put him to sleep and keep him sleeping longer,

  • A heavy-weight sleep sack (like this one), keeps him cozy warm and prevents him from waking himself up from wriggling,

  • Overnight diapers, no need for nighttime diaper changes that wake him up too much.

Good luck! The 4-month sleep regression definitely sucks!!

We're also in a one bedroom studio. Life these days is expensive! It can be hard to move! We're using a Pack N Play instead of a crib and when we need it dark, I think we're going to get this . You can also get a small dresser with a changing table on top. We're also getting a folding high chair so we can store it when we're not using it. You got this! You're not alone!

u/vasneema · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Haven't used one but a Zipadee-Zip might be what you're looking for. I believe it's still okay to use if they are rolling but don't quote me on that. We're using a Love to Dream Swaddle UP 50/50 over here and it's working pretty good to stifle the startle reflex and helping to transition to a sleep sack. My guy only rolls around occasionally during play though, so I'm still okay with him wearing this until he gets used to not being swaddled.

I second the Munchkin Nose Machine with Projector! We don't use the projector part much, but the noise machine is in use for every nap and bedtime. I love that it has a timer and a nightlight.

Munchkin in general is awesome. Our Diaper Genie diaper pail busted awhile ago, and we finally replaced it with a Munchkin one. I love it! Much easier to remove the bag when it's full, it self twists every time you close the lid, and it has the little Arm & Hammer odor control insert. Munchkin as a brand is wonderful- incredibly affordable and good quality.

We also love this play yard. You can buy extensions for it, and it's so easy to put together/take apart/clean. You can use it inside or outside. It is a permanent staple in our living room.

This sleep sack - We used Baby Dee Dee sleep sack on my son all last winter and it worked awesome!

Or maybe a weighted blanket?

she won't hit you

We could really use this toy hammock for the chaos of my daughter's room.

u/Dalaniel19 · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

Oh I know! That is the scariest part of having a pitbull with kids.

He is pretty good about it now that he is used to her being around. He is more careful. Also when she is on the floor we have her in a Pen which helps a TON!

It was getting bad. They infest places very quickly. It starts with a few, then bam! They've started breeding. We did what we could before spraying. We vacuumed daily, made sure to keep blankets and clothes off the floor, washed the curtains, but nope. They infested the place within a month. If you're finding a few, I suggest you vacuum every nook and cranny and wash any cloth like material that hasn't moved to a new spot for more than two weeks. Such as your curtains, any clothes on the floor that have sat for a while, underneath your bedding and mattress. Definitely wash your bedding. They like breeding under mattresses and in the corners of the room in your carpet. If you have children who have stuffed animals, I suggest getting rid of them or vacuuming/ washing them throughly and storing them in airtight bags or in a toy hammock to keep them off the floor. Carpet beetles fly, but I find that they're less likely to be interested in them if they're not on the floor. They also love any non heavy traffic areas because they're undisturbed. Like under the bed or in the back of the closet.

I've never lived in an apartment that wasn't infested with them. They don't come in just because you're a filthy human either. They come in because your clothing and carpets are tasty. As a child, I wouldn't touch the bottom of my toy box because the bottom was just alive. It wriggled and crawled there were that many just chilling in there. You would lift up my mattress and it was the same thing. Just crawling. I never slept under the covers on my bed because the blankets would be full of them. My stuffed animals would also be covered in the larvae. Those were bad infestations.

At the apartment I live in now, I was killing about five or six a day until we sprayed pesticides. I was finding larvae under my bed, stuck to the carpet. Once you start finding larvae, it's all over.

4Your best bet after you've found larvae is to bug bomb/ fog/ or spray. I really do recommend the Ortho Home Defense though if you've come to that point. So far, it's done wonders and it lasts a year and it's fairly cheap compared to having to bomb/ fog every few months. We bought the spray bottle version for around $4 each at Lowe's. I haven't seen any beetles in the areas we've sprayed. I've seen a few in the kitchen, which we haven't gotten around to spraying there yet. They've found a safe haven there, but they can't breed in there, so they're slowly dying.

Once my baby noticed it (around 8-10 weeks) she really enjoyed looking at. I was able to put her down in her crib, turn it on, and it would give me 20 minutes of free time to use the bathroom and eat! She's 6 months now and she still enjoys it and I think she finds the music comforting b/c she's heard it so much! I got this inexpensive one and it's great b/c it's easy to move and travel with.

Our baby did the same at around 11 weeks. He HATED to be swaddle, would cry and kick until he would roll. We bought the Love To Dream Swaddle UP 50/50 Transition Bag; you can buy it on amazon or Target/Walmart. It worked wonders, once he lost the startle reflex, we took the wings out. Without feeling snug, babies don't sleep as good. They were inside a very tight place for months and they miss the feeling.

u/akpak · 1 pointr/BabyBumps

Ok, first of all... BREATHE.

You have time. All you must have to take baby home is the car seat, a place for them to sleep (more in a moment), a few clothes, some diapers, and either your own boobs or a bottle and some formula.

Everything else could easily wait a couple days.

Now, even if you don't want to give it to anyone, I highly recommend setting up an Amazon registry. It guides you pretty well through the bare necessities, and you can do it from the comfort of the couch.

I didn't pick out nearly everything they suggested, but I found the checklists helpful anyway.

All in one baby station? Something like this would get you through the first little bit no problem. A place to sleep, a place to change her, and a little storage for diapers and such.

I don't know a single mom or mom-to-be who doesn't have one.

You can do this. You'll be great. Breathe!

We also used the swaddle up.

Love to Dream Swaddle UP 50/50, Gray, Large, 18.5-24 lbs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0081GIYTE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JxKOzb8CQRBWS

She would cry with nothing, but it only took a couple days to go from swaddled, to arms out without too much sleep disruption. Plus, once you unzip the arm holes you can use it as a sleep sack. I still use it for naps and bed and she seems to sleep better than without anything at all. We started using it at naps with both arms in for a couple days till she was used to it. Then unzipped one arm. Then the other. Now she's sleeps fine with both arms out.

No, it's like a little baby fence. We have this one. It's pretty big!

How about if you got something like this or this to keep the cats out?

You can always use Snoozeshade for a pack n play to darken the sleeping area and do crib hour.

One of my favorite characters is Guts from the Beserk menga. 1. hes a super hot bad boy. 2. hes ridiculously strong 3. i love the progression he makes throughout the show. 4. his, um.. sword is huge :)

and a quote: "If you’re always worried about crushing the ants beneath you, you won’t be able to walk." So true! Stop worrying about the small problems and concentrate on your goal! Boom! Roasted.

This for my son would be great! (his room is overrun with furry things!!) and thanks for the awesome contest!!

I just found this bassinet/cosleeper online n I like that it looks easier for breastfeeding, can be packed up for travel, and is on wheels so can be moved into another room if I want: https://www.amazon.com/Mika-Micky-Bedside-Sleeper-Portable/dp/B07J232RV4/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=bedside+cosleeper&qid=1556010314&s=gateway&sr=8-2

My bed is on the ground, I also have a slim box spring so this was actually perfect for us. I was able to just sit up/ reach down and get her instead of actually completely getting up. If you have a King this would fit in the bed between you and your SO. They have other similar versions for bed side with adjustable height, of course more spendy. This made sense for us.

The most convenient part was having her right next to me, with out co-sleeping, and not having to actually get up/out of bed. Babies wake up every 2 hrs to eat, that’s a lot of getting up at night. The other thing if you plan on using a pacifier newborns suck at keeping them in so, it was nice to just reach down to put it back in a comfort her.

I use this until my baby could push her self up/got to long, then we switched to a crib, she was also sleeping longer stretches at night at that point so I didn’t mind. Would be worth checking for second hand bed side cribs. At minimum plan to have your baby close to your bed and not across the room, atleast for the first week.

This is what we have and I love it. It's half the width of a regular pack n play so it doesn't take up as much room. It can be used as a bassinet/cosleeper or a pack n play. I had my first son in bed with me at birth, and he still is at 3yo lol. My second son slept next to our bed for the first 6 months in a fisher price rock n play sleeper. It's much easier to move around to wherever you need it than the cosleeper, but is outgrown around 6-7 months. Then when he got too tall ( he's also huge, 90th %) we switched him to the cosleeper. Now at 17 months he still nurses at night frequently so I just leave him in the middle to fight his brother for space haha.

I'm seconding all the Ferber suggestions, but we also gave our boy a little blankie/lovey to play with and chew on while he sleeps. I was super nervous to do so (nothing allowed in the crib!!) but I ended up finding these tiny little completely breathable muslin squares, and the baby took to them so well! I started giving him one to sleep with at about 4 months, and we've had zero issues. It gives him something to do with his hands, and something to chew on for comfort. He's old enough now to just find his paci and pop it back in his mouth, but when he was younger these blankets helped because they were so easy for him to grab. Now he just plays with them and waves them in the air until he puts himself to sleep. It's adorable!
