What a novel idea, I fully support it, let’s try it at once!

One deciliter (30-40g) coarse rolled oats if you pay more than $0.64/pound you’re a tool 🛠

Two deciliter water, a dash of Ceylon cinnamon, I love the very mellow taste of Ceylon cinnamon. A dash of vanilla, in my neck of the woods it usually comes as a mixture of sugar and powdered vanilla, I recommend the 100% pure vanilla powder, but I sure the other stuff is good too, there’s supposedly this weird sirupy stuff, I haven’t tried it though. Oh and a pinch of salt, otherwise it tastes weird.

I cut up half an apple and mixed it in after it had boiled, it’s super easy to make, heat until boiling, and mix a bit and turn off the heat and let it sit until the correct consistency. Takes less time than it took to write all of this, and before all the social keto warriors come out of the woodwork with their high fat, high protein but god forbid you eat an apple “cytopunch to the gut” bullshit let me just say that I really enjoy my oatmeal, and you will pry it from my cold dead hands.

Anyway, I finished the rest of the apple, and drank some English breakfast tea with whole milk and some sweetener.

/u/TrashyTripod & /u/gotsmile, you guys are going to laugh at how easy this is.

There are recipes online. Do a little googling about what soap ingredients have different effects, like I did a rose oil (omg, the scent!) and rose clay soap, which is good for skin, or honey and oatmeal which is more exfoliation. Some are better for dry skin, oily skin, or just neutral.

I buy everything from Amazon:

  • Molds: gems, bars, fun small shapes

  • Melt and pour soap base: honey, goat's milk. I'm picky and I only buy the organic stuff. Buy it sooner rather than later, it will sell out by the holidays! Learned that the hard way, last year.

  • Mix-ins: oatmeal, activated charcoal. You want everything to be food-grade.

    ------------

    How To

The soap base breaks apart into 1 inch cubes. In a microwave safe measuring cup, microwave 2-4 cubes in 30 second increments until melted. Stir in any oils, perfumes, or colorants (although I avoid coloring soap, personally; I like the 'natural' stuff). Pour the appropriate amount into your mold. Working quickly, in the soap-filled mold, stir in any large add-ins, like charcoal or oatmeal. Wipe down the measuring cup, repeat as necessary.

Leave the mold out at room temperature to set. Give it time (6-24 hours). Gently remove from the mold and wrap in cling wrap to avoid moisture beads from forming. Later, put the plastic-wrapped soaps in a little goody bag with a piece of colorful tissue paper. FYI, the tissue paper will stick to the soap if they touch.

    --------

    Tips:

  • Learn from my mistake: when you're done, wash the measuring cup and molds by hand. If you put them in a dishwasher, it will become coated in soap. This kills the dishwasher.

  • Buy 2 molds. Make a batch in the morning and again in the evening. If you use the bar mold, that gives you 12 bars per mold x 2 molds x 2 times in a day, or 48 bars for ~3 hours of work on a Saturday. You'll get faster as you get the hang of it.

  • How much soap base you need depends on the size of your molds and how many soaps you're making. I found that 2 lbs of soap base was enough for about 16 bars using this mold. But I didn't really like the shape of the soap in that mold because it was too deep.

  • If you're using heavy or large add-ins, it pays to let the soap solidify for a second before mixing them in, or it'll all sink to the bottom.

  • It's fun to combine with other homemade cosmetics gifts, like DIY lip balm or something, but that requires a whole other set of materials, so increases your costs.

Quaker Real Medleys Oatmeal+, Variety Pack, Instant Oatmeal+ Breakfast Cereal (12 Pack Cups) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GQ5WKNC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_PT-Oyb8QWPK19

I'd try buying something like these for a while instead of the pop tarts. Then if you find you like that, you can make your own stuff that's cheaper and healthier.

My pleasure. This instant oatmeal is cheap and tasty and nutritious. Also, easy to cook- just add water whole milk.

Trail staples like peanut butter, Nutella, trail mix, hard candies/chocolates will all keep really well without refrigeration. Things like Spam Singles and tuna singles are really shelf stable and versatile. Instant oatmeal is also an easy breakfast and pretty negligible in terms of weight, especially since all you need is some hot water. I like taking instant polenta for the same reason - fills you up, takes 3 minutes to cook and is great with some salami or cheese mixed in.

There's also a supermarket chain in Iceland called Bonus and there are quite a few of them around the place. They have a huge selection of things like salami and hard cheeses which were staples of what I carried while I was there (spent 3.5 weeks hiking/camping the whole country basically). Tortillas are light and easy to pack and would definitely last you a week.

I love wraps! I grab a spinach wrap (I think mission brand) and put in roasted red pepper hummus, sprouts, corn, black beans, cheese and lettuce. You can throw anything you like in them though which is why I love them.

Do you like oatmeal? I really like these. I think they're around $1.50 in stores and really convenient. Although they do have a bit of nuts in them so if don't like any nuts ever I guess those are out.

you should be able to pick out things that are on Prime and put them on your wishlist, too, not just pantry. Example

Do you think that this oat cereal being "prepared food would prevent the cordyceps from growing?

I usually only have 10 min for breakfast and hate overnight oats, so here’s what I do.

Most days I eat [Bob’s Red Mill Instant Oats] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M29FGOK/ref=mp_s_a_1_12_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1524954670&sr=8-12&keywords=bobs+red+mill+instant+oatmeal) using hot water since I find in the microwave it always makes a mess. To that I either add one chopped up apple, or 1tsp butter and 2 tsp brown sugar. If I want something a little more filling I’ll make boiled eggs ahead of time, mash an egg into the oatmeal right after I put the hot water in, and add tomatoes, pepper, and salt. It might sound a little weird but it’s delicious and my favorite breakfast food that is quick and easy. Hope this helps!

I bought a variety box of the flavored ones and they're disgusting. My kid refuses to touch it. So I ordered this non flavored instant Quaker Oats. After 15% subscribe and save (-$1.80) and a coupon (-$3.60) the total for 8lbs is $6.59 in case you're interested

[Red River Cereal] (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01EYBIU70/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sSJVBb0V2TF09). I'm eating a bowl of it right now. It's basically a multigrain porridge. Great with a little honey and cinnamon or soy sauce, green onions, garlic, and ground ginger.

I have had steel cut on occasion but usually it's these "quick oats," http://www.amazon.ca/Standard-Quaker-Quick-Oats-Kg/dp/B015E0LKYA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1457026181&sr=8-2&keywords=oats

So, yeah, you're right, they are similar to instant except no added sugar or junk flavourings or anything. They are labelled 100% whole grain oats so it's still a whole grain and the fibre content has not been removed. My understanding was that all oats were whole grain though, I don't think the comparison is similar to white bread. I have had it with berries and other types of fruit, and that doesn't seem to make much of a difference.. I love fruit but it doesn't make the oats seem more filling. I think I just don't do well on carby foods, even not the whole grain ones like oats, brown rice, whole grain bread. They just make me hungrier and crave more carbs, like almost right away. I think I'm just one of those people who do better on a low-ish carb diet. I may eventually try oats and pimp it with both egg whites and nuts to see if that finally works better for me.

Cup of Noodles should take a page out of Nature Valley's book.

http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Valley-Oatmeal-Keurig%C2%AE-Machine/dp/B00IP6Y264

Make a cup of noodles that comes with a Kcup of the seasoning.

If anyone else has to live that sad desk lunch life, I can't recommend these oats enough. They're very lightly sweetened with just a little taste of maple. The best part is the texture. The oats and flaxseed give this a little bite that you usually can't get from microwaved oats. I also love that the smell is so light, more like oats than fakey maple the way other microwaved oats do. It makes it more ideal for an office environment, for sure. I'm never disappointed with it, and this time was no exception!

How expensive? You can get 30oz of steel cut oats for $10 with prime.

> I can not find any research about the difference between steel cut oats and non-steel cut oats.

I would imagine that they use the same suppliers for both products, though there may be something in the refinement process that makes the instant oatmeal have a higher concentration of weed killer for some reason. It really sucks but you're just going to have to check the back of boxes from now on to make sure that you're getting something that's actually decent for your kids (just a tip, the World Health Organization suggests that we limit our daily sugar intake to 25g).

As for a healthier alternative, you could try regular steel cut oats, this is a pretty good + affordable brand. They take a little longer to prepare but you can control how much sugar you're putting into them (I like putting in jams and fruits, personally). There are many other brands too, and honestly they're like one of the easiest things to learn how to make, check out this video.

If you've got picky kids that have to have their foot sweetened, whole fruits (like fruit you chop up yourself and put in there) are ideal because they have lots of micronutrients in them and fiber, but good jams (not jelly, jelly is made from "juice" while jam at least contains pieces of crushed fruit) can be a decent option for sweetening foods, same with raw honey.
