Not really in the Lovecraft style, but I highly recommend The Laundry Files series by Charles Stross. It starts with The Atrocity Archives, followed by The Jennifer Morgue, The Fuller Memorandum, and The Apocalypse Codex. The basic premise is that there's a civil service department run by the British that deals with all of the occult stuff that goes on (the Deep Ones, monkey's paws, etc.). It is sometimes quite dark (gaping maws, dead planets, old gods, ancient rituals), but shot through with a good bit of humor.

Also, there's a (award-winning) novelette by him called, "A Colder War", which you can read online here. It's a fusion of Cthulhu Mythos and the Cold War.

The Apocalypse Codex - Charles Stross

Existence - David Brin

2312 - Kim Stanley Robinson

First off, I got what looks to be some great books from my match. I got Perdido Street Station, Hyperion, The Sparrow, The Little Country, and American Gods. I have never read nor heard of these titles, but I'm excited to start reading them.

Now for the best part. My match sent me an original manuscript for a novel they wrote. How awesome is that? They also included a short story (a side story to the novel) that includes me as a character. I can honestly say that this is one of the best things I've ever received! I think I'll start with the novel first.

*update: Thanks for all of the encouraging posts! It seems that I really struck gold on this exchange. I sent a little reddit gold love to my SS for the wonderful gift. It's such a great collection that I feel like the books I sent to my match are woefully inadequate.

Rhythm has launched. In under 24 hours, it's climbed to top 500 Metaphysical Fantasy, top 100 LGBTQ Fantasy, and is scaling the Urban Fantasy charts with no sign of stopping. :)

Lots of love to everyone who's been supporting me, and who continues to support me, as an independent author.

Hear the rising beat. Ihy is calling you.

Short plot preview, from the Amazon page here ( https://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Bard-Chronicles-Rithmarck-Adventure-ebook/dp/B07HD3CJ13):

>Play a bard, meet sexy girls, and discover forgotten lore...
>
>Darren is homeless when he’s offered the deal of a lifetime: get paid to play a bard in an online, virtual reality game. The catch? He’s tasked with awakening Angelica, a crippled girl who’s spent ten years in the game.

>
>As he embarks on his search for her, Darren goes on adventures, learns the lore of the land, and finds that being a bard is more fun than it seemed.

>
>But appearances can deceive—especially in a VR world—and Darren is taken aback to discover the girl he’s been assigned to track may not even be the right one. When he finds not one but three girls who fit the bill for Angelica, Darren is forced to stretch his talents and skills to investigate them all, thrusting himself into the midst of warring players, corrupted guilds and forgotten lore.

>
>As secrets bubble to the surface and chaos looms, Darren’s investigation puts the girls under threat, and he’s forced to decide where his loyalties lie. Can he uncover the truth and save them before it’s too late? And more importantly… does he have what it takes to be a Bard?

>
>Read Breaking Bard: Serenade now and immerse yourself in a LitRPG adventure with sexy goodness and a wily hero who doesn’t quite know what he’s gotten himself into.

>
>Warning: Contains graphic violence, revenge, swear words, conspiracies, harassment, forbidden gods, gratuitous sex, and elements of polyamory/harem. If any of these is not your thing, this book is not for you.

Length: 530 pages.

Cost: $6, approximately.

This is Book 1 of 2, although review count is low and suspect enough to discourage buying the second book.

Book 1 has 38 reviews and averages out to 4.4 Stars. Half of the positive reviews at 4 or 5 Stars are so vague that you could post them on any other book and it would still make contextual sense ("It is good book. Want to read. 5 stars"). However, one negative review has the most "helpful" up votes, reading,

>The story and setting was decent enough to make me want to finish the book, but I'll not be buying more from this author. There's severe pacing issues, jarring plot gaps, emotions that don't transfer between paragraphs, and a complete mischaracterization of many topics and theories regarding human behavior that quite frankly I don't know why the author even bothered to bring them up at all. Written like a complete amateur, and a tradcon at that, not worth the FULL PRICE of $5.99! Maybe $2.99 tops for a first go-around. But its written too much like a first book by someone that's never written professionally before much less fanfic levels of bad.

>
>Topics like rape, abuse, sexual assault, sexual therapy, AI NPC's are real people too, and other such ideas are mentioned, become plot devices and are immediately discarded. I felt insulted for having read this dreck, as this author is deliberately mischaracterizing the issues to create plot points while lacking the skill necessary to do them justice or even the comprehension of the ramifications resulting from the plot points even existing.

>
>One of the plot points is that there's a guild that has 'bad men' that are abducting and 'raping' NPC women. Except that doesn't even make sense from inside the game. Unless the company, Tempest, deliberately made the NPC women to be raped. In every single MMO in even our era, the GM's are sent alerts when code and NPC's go haywire. Oh look, this NPC is stuck and isn't moving or has moved beyond its bounds and isn't acting properly, let me go check on it to find out what is going on. But no checks, no NPC alerting system, no way for the NPC's to alert the system that something has gone wrong, no way for the system to find out what is going on with NPC's, and only the female NPC's don't respawn. Instead its like they only exist to be abused because this one guild is evil, and 'men are bad.'

>
>The main character is an idiot. Supposedly is a long time gamer, played the game before and good at it. Down on his luck, homeless and about to be thrown in jail for a crime he didn't commit. Gets the job of a lifetime, literally, and then proceeds to pretty much ignore the plot to go on weird side adventures and not level asap like he'd know to do from prior game play. Instead he's stuck as a bard, and spends most of his time...not barding, and only seems to level either accidentally or when someone else is doing all the work for him.

>
>The sex is boring, and his relationships with the three primary women are abusive. He's being used while playing the heroic nice guy, and yet somehow getting laid ...by some rando npc girl that broke code to go follow him from the starter zone...for some reason. Does anyone actually GM moderate this game or did Tempest just turn it on, and walk away? If Blackwing from WoW left his raid instance and just chilled in Ogrimmar on a lark, you bet they'd shut that server down and pour over the code to find out what the hell went wrong. Then there's the NPC's that sometimes act sentient and others just do their script with no consistency. And then there's a few that hint that they are aware they are code...but don't care.

>
>Half baked book.

Sad thing is Charles de Lint wrote a book with the title Onion Girl.

Lately, though, the price point of an ebook has been incredibly unappealing. look at this fine example: Random book. Notice that the paperback price is lower than the kindle price.

Now, buying a virtual copy of a book costs more than a physical copy. Woo hoo!

u/Intense_Like_Camping · 3 pointsr/Fantasy

One of the first things that comes to mind is the Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko. Granted, I only read the first two books in the series, but it definitely gave an interesting twist to traditional good vs evil roles - particularly by the second book, where you got the story from the "evil" side. Without spoiling too much, there's a lot of back and forth, each side thinking they're in the right, and in the end you're left wondering if there's any difference at all.

There's a quip in a Charlie Stross novel (The Apocalypse Codex I think) I really like. Paraphrased, it goes like this:

> Any sufficiently advanced form of Calvinism is indistinguishable from Chthulhu worship

None where everything is out of a musical.

However, I can think of lots fantasy with musical themes. The most obvious is the Spellsinger series by Alan Dean Foster. A lot of Charles DeLint's books have musical themes, like The Little Country. A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows by Mercedes Lackey. The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfas, sorta. The sci fi book One Woke Up by Lee Gaiteri develops a musical theme halfway through.

Have you ever said something only to regret it later? Did you ever break your Mom's favorite mug? Or graze your boss' car in the parking lot, only to be stripped of a bonus later? All of us have those moments when we wish we could rewind time. We'd have done everything differently then!
Sergei is no exception. With only one difference: he is lucky enough to have received the Time Master development branch. So yes, he can now rewind time, albeit a few seconds at a time, allowing him to rectify his mistakes and defeat much stronger opponents. In addition, Sergei gains access to a great multitude of worlds governed by magic. And he also lays his hands on a Divine Avatar which might open up new paths to even more amazing abilities.
Still, everything has its price. Very soon Sergei will have to confront freeloaders who are scheming to steal his new abilities from him. Will he have enough time to face them fully prepared? Are all of his friends worthy of his trust?

I’d like to present the new LitRPG series – Interworld Network by Dmitry Bilik. The first volume is called The Time Master

Blurb:

An ordinary Russian guy, Sergei picks a fight in his neighborhood, defending a little boy. Problem is, the guy he's just defeated vanishes into thin air, leaving Sergei to discover he now possesses the ability to turn time around.

On top of that, Sergei can now travel between worlds. He acquires even more mysterious new skills and abilities. And he discovers there're many others just like him in our world.

Sergei finds his own place in the secret community of the Seekers - creatures with superpowers. He even teams up with a few of his new buddies, planning to strike gold in one of the neighboring worlds.

Sergei has no idea that his every step is being watched. He's being shadowed by the Darkest One - one of the oldest Seekers around who'll know no peace until he gets hold of some of Sergei's unique abilities.

I feel wierd plugging my stuff, but here goes. Ruins of rimnir, each book is around (this is pretty broad) 250 pages, but 5 books are out and book 6 is on the way. Tbh it's a bit unsophisticated as it's my copywriters first lit rpg, and my first published work that did not involve D&D in someway. I think we mature in the Genre, and get over all better. Anyways Ruins of Rimnir

It would help to know which country you live in to find a site for you. I found several offers on amazon.com though, as well as amazon.de:

Some imports are quite pricey at $68, but some others sell it starting from $19.

Harry Potter:
http://www.amazon.com/Potter-filosofskii-Philosophers-Russian-Edition/dp/535300308X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409645388&sr=8-1&keywords=harry+potter+russian

Hint and fun fact: In Russian there's no H like we know it, so when translating names it's often/sometimes replaced with G. So the book it russian is actually called Garri Potter. Maybe that helps with your search.

Aha. If it's not too big a burden, do Future You a favor and get the first three as an omnibus: the first two books are enjoyable, but in the context of the series as a whole they're more of a setup and introduction to the world and some characters, and it's not till book 3 that things really take off :)

The Onion Girl by Charles de Lint is amazing. Definitely a bittersweet ending.

/u/Tevesh_CKP listed several series that I have read or are on my to-read list, so excluding them...

I just had a similar question myself, so I looked around for decent urban fantasy that stayed away from the paranormal romance that seems to be about 60% of the genre.....that said, I have a lot of books I just added to me to-read list. I can't really vouch for how good/bad they may be, but you can certainly check and see if these hold any interest for you.

Felix Castor series by Mike Carey

Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka

Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey

Laundry Files by Charles Stross

Joe Pitt series by Charlie Huston

Twenty Palaces series by Harry Connolly

Demon Accords series by John Conroe

Skinners series by Marcus Pelegrimas

Connor Grey series by Mark Del Franco

Shadow Police series by Paul Cornell

Tome of Bill series by Rick Gualtieri

Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko

Bobby Dollar series by Tad Williams

Central series by Zachary Rawlins

Darker Shade of Magic series by V.E. Schwab

Magic 2.0 series by Scott Meyer - this one is a little lighter/comical

Also, since you said you really like Harry Potter, you might try The Magicians trilogy by Grossman - it is like Harry Potter fused with Narnia, grew up, and got an attitude. Lots of people like it since it is rather Harry Potter-esque, but lots of people don't like it because the tone of the books doesn't fit with the tone from Harry Potter. It is much more cynical and adult.

OK, that turned out to be really long but hopefully really helpful as well!

Anyone in need of fantasy that gives them a good laugh? Alright, it's urban fantasy, but surely that counts right?

Brian Helsing: The World's Unlikeliest Vampire Hunter. A six-foot-seven geek extraordinaire with no social skills and a backbone of jelly, somehow finds himself becoming the latest in the thousand-year line of esteemed Vampire Hunters.

Currently three books out (soon to be four) and the first one is permafree. I would be ecstatic if you'd check it out.

I just wrapped up my first GameLit/Fantasy series last month! Free for three days:

In Ghosts and Villagers, 14-year-old Leo Taurino doesn't know what made him capable of talking to the ghosts trapped in the art museum. None of his friends could. However, they lead them to an alternate Earth, where plants and creatures evolved much differently over millions of years. The Village lays hidden in a cave, unburdened by the dangerous animals, weather, and plant-life scattering the diverse planet, Terra. The Villagers might have the answers to the crystals, which teleport them between worlds, but Leo and his friends uncover layers to them far greater than any locals have discovered. As they unravel the objects' mysteries and aim to save the ghosts who have been trapped for nearly one hundred years, there is a peculiar animal smarter than humans, but caged by them, called the prows. Their chief might have the answers Leo needs to unlock the crystals' full potential.

Ghosts and Villagers is free ONLY for the next three days (exclusively on Amazon for e-book). It would be fantastic to receive feedback or questions as well!

I'll just throw in there are actually quite a few book series that focus on superheros, but aren't adaptions.

George R.R. Martin edits a series called Wild Cards which he refers to as mosaic novels. He and his friends will right a series of short stories which fit into a novel, each novel is part of a trilogy, and each trilogy is part of the larger world. The series has been going on since the 80's. The first one Wildcards was recently republished with added material. If you want to skip forward though Inside Straight was written to be a good jumping on point.

Brandon Sanderson recently wrote a series called The Reckoners , where people with Superpowers have taken over the world and

I haven't read these, but Vicious is supposed to be really good as well. Ex-Heroes is massup of the Superhero and zombie genres, I can't speak to it's quality, but it's fairly successful.

I know it isn't exactly what you're looking for, but I thought these might interest you.

Edit: Oh, and if you are interested in the Wildcards series, I would highly suggest reading the first novel even if you skip forward afterwards. The first book is essentially a series of short stories that tell the history of the Wildcards from their appearance in the 40's to the 80's when the rest start taking place.

This link is just МЕТРО 2033, and this one is the Trilogy. I think any source of Russian reading will improve language learning, but having at least a beginner understanding will help more so you can at least get an idea of what is going on. And then you can learn new words to expand the details.

What is it so I can buy and read it?|Bad Luck by Brad Younie. It's on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Nook, and anywhere else. In hardcover, paperback, and ebook (epub and Kindle)|Here
What's it called?|Bad Luck by Brad Younie.|Here
What was your process like, in terms of developing the story? Did you start with a rough idea of a story you wanted to tell, or did you come up with the world first? I'm super curious about how you go from a spark of inspiration to a completed story.|I was thinking about a conversation I had with a guy who didn't know that fairies in folklore were pretty badass, and I thought about writing a scene that would show it off. Then, the first scene of the book just sort of came to me. I spent some days building the character in my head, and then I took notes once I knew I was going to write a book. Then I worked out the extent of his powers and figured out as much of the magic system I needed for the book. I started writing the novel by the seat of my pants but eventually got to a point where I needed to do plotting. So, I storyboarded using index cards (I hate outlines). The book was a combination of seat-of-my pants writing and storyboard. The editing was crucial to make sure continuity was right and that everything fit well together, with appropriate clues and such.|Here
is this the book/novel ur talking https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X7FF4HW/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1|Yes it is. Due to a fluke, the Kindle version releases tomorrow, but all the other versions are out today|Here
What was the biggest challenge you faced during the whole process? Do you have any plans/ideas for your next novel, or are you going to wait a bit to see how well this one does before you start your next work? Any advice for aspiring amateur writers that may want to write their own book and get it published?|The biggest challenge was marketing. Trying to figure out what to post on social media without sounding like I'm pushing my book too much. Finding other opportunities to spread the word, and stuff like that. Yes. In fact, the first draft of book two is more than 50% completed, around 58,000 words written. More world-building and magic system building went into this second book and it ups the ante as far as what is going on in the world. Join a writer's group, especially a read and critique one. That helped me a lot for motivation and improving my writing. If you want to Indie publish, join ALLi, the Alliance for Independent Authors and Illustrators. They are mostly helpful when doing the whole publishing and marketing thing. Just write. It doesn't matter what. If you're having trouble coming up with ideas, do fan fiction. It doesn't hurt and it's writing practice. I wrote a fan fiction novel and posted it on Wattpad. It was fun and it helped me hone my craft.|Here
How long did it take you from your first idea to getting published? Do you have any formal training in writing? Is it more important that you completed your book or that you become a successful author?|I wrote my first draft in the space of about six months, doing it during my lunch breaks, after work, and on weekends. I also have a family, so finding time was rough. Then I set it aside, initially for a month so that I could come at it fresh when I edit. But I got caught up working on other books (which are also going to be published) and forgot it for a couple of years. The publishing process took most of this year. So, it would have been a couple years if I didn't forget about it in between. I've gotten better at maintaining my writing schedule so that my first drafts are a lot faster now. Not really. I've been writing all my life but never completed any story until the past few years. I took a writing class in college, but that was just one semester, so it didn't help too much. The important thing is to read a lot and write a lot. Practice makes perfect. It's more important to get my book done and have people read it. Definitely. Becoming successful is something I want, but it's secondary to writing and having people enjoy my writing.|Here

I read something called "The Onion Girl" by a fantasy writer named DeLint. I haven't read anything else by him, and i don't plan to. Maybe it was a YA novel, I'm not sure. But it was this horrible "urban fantasy" thing ... I have actually blanked it from my mind.
