I built one of these, though admittedly much smaller, and a cheap intrex pool pump was fine.

Edit: this one, and they sometimes have used 500 or 1000 GPH versions, but those may be too strong unless your building a tank to fill and letting gravity feed the sleuce.

the sediment will filter out, but you can buy threaded filter adaptors that filter out sediment, metals, and minerals.

Teflon and silicone is what I use every day. 4 wraps or so of Teflon with a bead of silicone around the base (where the threads first touch the pump) of the fitting.

I wouldn't use white PVC on the pump fitting though, it's more prone to heat damage/warping. You want to use gray cpvc for at least a few inches. Even better would be a threaded Union like this 2" one or like this 1.5" one. The union gives you a way to break apart the plumbing later on for future repairs without having to cut it apart. Those unions are hi-temp rated to help prevent heat warping.

  2. Pleatco is OK, I would spend the extra few bucks and go with a Unicel. Just measure your old one, and make sure it matches the new dimensions

If you don't want to buy the real ones, you can do this in a different way more cheaply.

Just use a skimmer sock or anything similar

You may need to get an adapter fitting for yoru return:

and then just use a rubber band or zip tie to hold the skimmer sock onto the fitting to create your DIY slime bag.
