Did you order your air popper yet? I shouldn’t have to tell you twice!

Throw a splash of hot chili oil and a splash of Cholula in there. It'll be really spicy and delicious. I have a catamount glass microwave popper like this. I've tried other hot sauces but Cholula works the best without getting gooey.

I used one of these back in high school, when I ran then Sno-Cone/Popcorn stand at the local minor league baseball stadium. The popcorn is pretty damn good.

My two favorites:

Temp-tations bakeware. All of it is amazing, microwave/oven/dishwasher safe, they have lids for storage.... I have one that's a huge tray (which is also cookware) with a flat cookie-sheet lid, then inside is a bunch of smaller pieces.. I can fill them up with dips for parties, or rice/beans and toss them all in the oven to keep warm, then fill the main portion with fajita meat.. whatever. They're super dope. I have that style and then a few smaller soup bowls and other things she's gotten me as gifts. Love 'em all

The Ecolution Micro-Pop microwave popcorn popper. This thing is a game-changer for microwave popcorn... I was skeptical but man it does such a great job. I will never ever go back to bag popcorn

There's a couple caveats--it says you don't have to use oil, but mine ends up burning a little bit if I don't do oil. One small spray of oil on the bottom will prevent anything from sticking and burning and 2) you can put butter in the top to melt on the popcorn while it pops, but it doesn't work that well unless you cut the butter into smaller portions... then it works great. It's really nbd, just cut if off the stick in smaller pieces

I've turned a few people onto both products, they're seriously great

If you don't own an airpopper and dont want to deal with an airpopper. Let me recommend a microwave popper. like the one here: https://smile.amazon.com/Nordicware-Microwave-Popcorn-Popper-Cup/dp/B06XCF8WPR It requires no oil and its become one of my favorite kitchen devices. There are many other types that you can buy, thats just the one that I use.

I love my Cooling towel If I'm out in hot weather it'll keep cool for a good 3 hours. And this Silicone Popcorn Maker makes great popcorn in the microwave. Threw out our old air popcorn maker that didn't work all that well.

I can confirm. 1/3 cup popcorn kernels, 1 tbsp coconut oil (yellow colored), and a teaspoon of flavacol works perfectly with this -- The perfect movie theater popcorn recipe:

Many popcorn poppers are stainless (or available in stainless). For example the Wabash Valley Whirley Pop

https://www.amazon.com/Whirley-Stainless-Stovetop-Popcorn-Popper/dp/B00IRW15ES

or their Sweet and Easy Snack Machine (I have this one)

https://www.amazon.com/Wabash-Valley-Farms-Machine-Popping/dp/B07DR54KQ9/

There are plenty of stainless round pans that you could use to make flan. The choice is really up to what size you're looking to make. There's nothing special about a "flan pan". I've made flan at a large scale in disposable aluminum baking trays and had no issue with it getting dark or otherwise over-cooking.

u/MaiasXVI · 2 pointsr/roasting

Simplest way to get into roasting imo is to just buy an inexpensive air popper. I got this PopAir for $18 new, though the price seems to have come up since then. Performance wise I'm happy with how my roasts come out, though you're never going to get much precise control with an air popper. Coffee tastes real good though.

And here's an alternative to an air popper if you have a microwave

We have one of the silicone microwave popcorn poppers. A $4 bag of kernels is going to last us close to a year even though we make 4-6 cup batches at least twice a week.

The reviews say to add oil, but we always just drop the kernels right in the bottom with none and it always comes out perfect.

Here are my go-to's: 1) www.budgetbytes.com 2) Buy a crock pot. You can even get one used, just plug it in at the thrift store/yard sale to make sure it works. 3) If you ever have the option to shop at ALDI, get all of your dry goods (canned/boxed/shelf stable items) there that you can buy. 4) Do a grocery list and a meal plan every week. Start by taking an inventory of everything you've got in the cabinets and the fridge/freezer. Then, figure out how many meals you're going to need for that week. Plan recipes that use the same ingredients if you want to make a dish that won't use all of an ingredient you're going to need, but it will go bad. Then, make your grocery list (including how much you need of each ingredient). Over time, keep a spreadsheet or chart of what store has the best regular price for items you purchase the most, and which stores have them on sale frequently. Then, post your meal plan on the front of your fridge each week with the number of servings next to each meal you're going to have, and cross one off every time you eat it. (This tells you what your options are without having to root around. It also helps avoid food waste/spoilage, which is the enemy of budget grocery shoppers.) If you still have meals left on the meal plan sheet at the end of the week, that's where you start for next week's meal plan. 5) If any of the stores where you shop have free loyalty cards/ecoupons/signups to get paper coupons in the mail, learn the rules of the program and make them work for you. 6) Make things in big batches, portion them out, and freeze them/put them in the fridge so you can heat them up one serving at a time. Then, being tired/busy/lazy won't be an excuse for not eating well. 7) Embrace frozen veggies--they're frequently as healthy or healthier than fresh, and they don't have as much of a ticking clock on them as far as how long they'll be good, so there will be less in terms of wasted food.

Cheap healthy somewhat substantial snack suggestions: Nuts: they aren't super cheap, but if you can get a good deal, they're a good value because they are pretty filling without having to eat a lot of them. Hummus with fresh veggies to dip. I like multicolored bell peppers and celery, personally. If store-bought hummus is outside your budget, there are TONS of easy hummus recipes (some even on the site I linked above). Popcorn cooked in something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Nordicware-Microwave-Popcorn-Popper-Cup/dp/B06XCF8WPR/ref=sr_1_11?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1504572714&sr=1-11&keywords=microwave+popcorn+popper in the microwave. You can buy unpopped popcorn at crazy low prices, and then you just need a bit of oil (we use coconut oil) and your favorite seasonings/spices/salts. It is so much cheaper than pre-packaged microwave popcorn, and it's also healthier.

This is an absolute necessity. You might look at it and go "So? It's a blender." It is so much more than that. It is a product that has changed my kitchen for the better substantially. Why? Because it's incredibly powerful, it's super easy to clean, AND IT MAKES SOUP. You can make dinner in it, wash it out, then make milkshakes for dessert. You essentially will not need to ever get another blender. I've had mine for going on 3 years now, and it's just as good as the day I bought it. You can NEVER go wrong with Cuisinart's quality, and this product will show exactly why that is.

Here's my go-to recipe. My wife and I enjoy this several nights each week.

Hardware

stainless steel Whirley Pop popper

Ingredients

  • yellow popcorn kernels
  • popping oil blend (see sub-recipe below)
  • buttery-flavor popcorn salt, such as Flavacol or Peter's Movie Time
  • buttery popcorn topping, such as Peter's Movie Time, Mor-Gold Plus or Wabash Valley Farms' topping

    Ratios

Through some experimentation, I've come up with some ratios that can help novice poppers get to the panacea.

96:24:1 corn-oil-salt, by volume. For example, if you start with 1/2 cup of corn, you'd use 2 tbsp of oil and heaping 1/4 tsp of salt. This would get you to roughly 4 quarts of well-seasoned popcorn.

This ratio is a guideline. Given the same 1/2 cup corn above, if I want richer corn, I'll use 3 tbsp of oil blend instead of 2. I'll also sometimes use up to 1/2 tsp of salt, but any more will kill the rest of the flavors and make me really thirsty.

    Popping Oil Blend Recipe

  • 1 part unrefined coconut oil: unrefined retains more of the sweet, slightly fruity taste than refined coconut oil
  • 1 part red palm oil: natural color source and supplements the flavor of the coconut oil
  • 1 part vegetable oil, such as corn, peanut or soybean

Melt and mix together all 3 oils. Let cool and store in an airtight container.

    Technique

Heat the oil blend in the popper on medium-high heat, with 3-4 "canary" kernels. When one of those kernels pops, dump in the rest of the corn and salt. Close lid on popper and begin stirring.

After corn begins to pop, you'll hear kernels "ping" the lid and sides of the popper. As soon as this pinging sound stops, open the lid! It's at this point where there's enough popped corn mass to keep new poppers from flying all over the place. This is such an important step, because it provides maximum ventilation to rapidly disperse that evil steam. If you watch some theater poppers, their lids will fly open automatically once the corn gets to a certain level.

When popping slows, kill the heat on the burner and keep stirring the corn over the hot burner with an open lid. Once you have stirred off the rest of the steam, dump the corn into your favorite bowl. As long as you keep stirring, you won't burn the corn, and you want to keep it on heat as long as practical to get rid of steam.

As far as applying the buttery topping, resist the temptation to evenly distribute the topping across the popped corn. I personally get more enjoyment out of finding concentrated pockets of buttery corn throughout the bowl, rather than a homogenous pile where every kernel has just enough buttery topping to make it greasy, but not much more flavorful.
u/frogbreath88 · 1 pointr/Eugene

If you love popcorn keep your eye out for a deal on one of these. Use coconut oil to pop the corn and you won't even need to add flavoring, though salt can be a good addition.

Ive been eating air popped popcorn made in a great popper I got on Amazon. Basically add a half cup of white kernals and 1 tbs of coconut oil. Then you add a bit of this movie theater salt. The oil and salt adds flavor but does not make the popcorn anywhere near as unhealthy as the kind of popcorn you get in a bag or movies. You can also eat more of it.

Air popped is considered a much healthier way to eat popcorn

I have a plastic tub with a lid that I use to for popcorn in the microwave. It is healthier and you can use whatever you want for topping.

I have one of these guys:

You put popcorn into the bowl, optionally add a little bit of oil, and cook in the microwave like usual.

You can even serve from the bowl itself, and it rinses pretty easily

I use my food processor much more than my blender but I think it's because I didn't get one with enough power. This is the one

NOTE: I thought the use case of making soup in the blender was going to be stronger than it is but honestly I only do it a couple times a year and a pot is easier with an immersion.

u/bbqfap · 1 pointr/Coffee

I've been using a hot air popper to roast coffee for about 2 years now, and it works spectacularly. Once you try it , you'll never go back. Green coffee is fairly cheap, and also easy to find some really good stuff. I usually buy from here and here. You can find a popper that works at amazon for $20 plus shipping, or you can usually find one at walmart or target for $15-$20. I can't emphasize enough how much better this is than buying pre-roasted. I've yet to buy a pre-roasted coffee that came even close to some of the roasts that i've done.

u/greens11 · 1 pointr/Coffee

I've also been home roasting for the past eight months or so. Freshly roasted coffee beans are unbelievable. I bought some beans from Whole Foods to carry me over while I was moving and the coffee was noticeably worse.

As far as which popper, I am using a Toastess popcorn popper from amazon and it works well enough for me.

you can also always use your skillet and a lid. also yummy.

u/Who_GNU · -3 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

How are you popping your popcorn? The only reason I've ever seen popcorn burn is because there wasn't enough oil in the pan, or it was a bag of microwave popcorn with a susceptor.

If you are buying popcorn in a microwave bag, you are doing it wrong. Get something for use with (good), or without (better), a microwave. (I haven't used either of those specific products, but I use ones like them, and the principal is the same, so it is hard to go wrong.) They will pay for themselves in no time, because bulk popcorn and oil is really cheap, and making popcorn properly takes hardly any more time than microwaving a bag.

Stay away from air poppers, unless you want really dry popcorn. If you want to be healthy, cook it with a flavorful oil (e.g cocoanut or olive) and don't add butter. If the oil is flavorful, you won't need the butter to make it taste good.

For the best traditional popcorn though, cook it in cocoanut oil, add clarified butter, and salt it with finely ground salt, often referred to as flour salt.
