The ones I am talking about are metal. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Shower-Head-Extension-Arm/dp/B019KO96TW
Then the shower can float above your head and take up zero space in the stall.

I just looked at ours and it seems you are missing a seal between the door and the glass wall. Ours is shaped like a lower case h, something like

I googled smart shower and found this pretty expensive, I’m sure there’s cheaper ones though.
This is what I bought for the bench. It's already been framed and holds a lot of weight. I basically just had to install it by using thinset and placing it.
I use this adjustable shower extender arm. https://www.amazon.com/Extender-Rainfall-Adjustable-Extension-Straight/dp/B01M1DSC53/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=22HKZG8DNIHLA&keywords=shower+extender+arm&qid=1564757752&s=gateway&sprefix=shower+e,aps,154&sr=8-7&linkCode=ll1&tag=justtall65-20&linkId=fa56ccfcc00aba36238028878efe88c8&language=en_US
Super easy to install and remove if you're in a rental.
I'd recommend an S-pipe if you own the place. https://www.amazon.com/LDR-Industries-520-2419CP-Shower/dp/B0058FQJNY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?crid=22HKZG8DNIHLA&keywords=shower+extender+arm&qid=1564757302&s=gateway&sprefix=shower+e,aps,154&sr=8-17&linkCode=ll1&tag=justtall65-20&linkId=f5fbcd48af0583d4caf62557d2b0a8a9&language=en_US
I am 6' 8" tall and around four hundred pounds. I find most things in life are not made for me. However, I have been using one of the following in the shower for around fifteen years now, and I love it completely. I've had to take it apart and change out the o-rings once or twice over the years but other than that it has been wonderful!

Ok, I gut sucked down the rabbit hole and spend a couple of hours on this!
it looks like these 3 way diverter valves are somewhat universal. I found a couple of places that sell things that look very very close, but you'll have to be the judge because it's going to take having your part in hand and measuring it and checking fits etc, which I have no way of doing from photos.
here's one on amazonhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00YL0T8YY/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B00YL0T8YY&pd_rd_w=uNvMy&pf_rd_p=42743099-3c6a-4370-bd5b-c49af87959ea&pd_rd_wg=kvyRm&pf_rd_r=PVTFXQC4PHNZ08PP76HK&pd_rd_r=3a977eb4-a1ff-11e9-8709-2f7a320de62e
here's one on some rando site https://www.divapor.com/spares/showers/diverter-cartridge/3-way-shower-valve-flow-diverter-core-distributor-single-o-ring-push-fit.php
here's one at a site that just sells spare parts https://www.steamshowerspares.com/3-output-diverter-core-green-c2x12674488
also look at the video on this page. does it look like yours? (functionally, it's obviously not the exact one) https://www.steamshowerspares.com/threaded-3-4-5-outlet-thermostatic-shower-valve-c2x23131273
there seem to be a ton of companies making similar products. all of them cheap chineseum grade stuff it looks, but at least if you need to replace the whole unit you've got a chance of finding one that will fit in the existing hole https://www.amazon.com/XZST-Bathroom-Multi-Function-Rainfall-Overhead/dp/B07BTDDWM4/ref=sr_1_93?fst=as%3Aoff&qid=1562647378&refinements=p_n_material_two_browse-bin%3A542686011&rnid=542670011&s=hi&sr=1-93
https://www.amazon.com/Labkiss-Universal-Adjustable-Bathroom-Replacement/dp/B01L9CY4CM/ref=pd_sim_60_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01L9CY4CM&pd_rd_r=B5AJ4AT71M2D25N6B26V&pd_rd_w=yWOYY&pd_rd_wg=D2x9i&psc=1&refRID=B5AJ4AT71M2D25N6B26V
That should work for your pole idea. If not, go suction but you'll run into lack of a good surface to stick it.

You are trying to solve a problem that has already been solved
If it's your own place, you can put one or more of these in. Takes like 2 minutes. Makes a world of difference.
Shower Extension
The following, combined with silicon caulk might work...
LiveOakMed Collapsible Threshold Water Dam with Square End Caps (Square End Cap, 96”) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DQQP9GB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1szyCbS4DQMD1
So if I was to get the shower door below I can trim it to my measurements?
SUNNY SHOWER Door 60" - 64" W X 72" H Frameless Glass Sliding Shower Doors 3/8" Glass Panel, Brushed Nickel Finish https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0759GGF5S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VrIYCb8GCMSWT
You can buy attachments that let you adjust the height
Shower Extender Arm-11" Angle/Height Adjustable Entirely Brass Material Shower Arm Extension, Polished Chrome https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZZLTQF1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_21qDAb7XQT7AA
But where would I attached it to? Because it doesn’t seal to the glass. There is that metal on the bottom. I actually bought this one from amazon and I can’t get it in.
MFYO Frameless Shower Door Bottom Seal for 1/4-Inch(6mm) Glass,36-Inch Long, Vinyl, Clear https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LETHLX4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OHGrDb4M78RGQ
This one is 12" high and 17" long.

so you removed one of those single-piece plastic tub/shower/surrounds, correct?
i am looking to do the same shortly and replace mine with a shower stall + tile (no tub) much like you have done. is this the same type/style of product you used?: https://www.amazon.com/SCHLUTER-SYSTEMS-SHOWER-CENTER-STAINLESS/dp/B01D26B67Y/
any other comments regarding the shower removal/schulter install or any other details to be aware of? thanks -
https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Shower-Head-Extension-Arm/dp/B019KO966K/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1526859071&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=shower+head+extension&psc=1
had two of these set up at my last place
The Splash Shower Spa might be a tad easier to install based on the dimensions here...
https://secure.img1-fg.wfcdn.com/docresources/9932/6/68888.pdf
And the install instructions for the Fresca are here...
http://www.frescabath.com/v/vspfiles/files/pdf/FSP8001.pdf
Based on what I see here, tile would have to come off and you would have to move pipe. So if that's in your wheelhouse, yeah.
Otherwise you'll want to look up a "retrofit shower panel". Something like this...
https://www.amazon.com/Valore-VS-1205-Shower-Retrofit-Panel/dp/B017MHQQEC
You would be correct. Don't think O.P. is gonna' like the price, though.....
For a tub, which O.P. doesn't have:

and for the shower:
