I'm not sure what your price range is, but if you're looking to save up, the 187 Pro Derby Pads are amazing. I fall SUPER hard on my knees sometimes (yay being 6' 4"), and these are like falling on pillows, especially with gaskets.

They strap behind your knee, unlike other 187's which are slide-on. They're also semi-customizable, machine washable with instructions, and even come in colors :)

Other than that, I think upgrading your bearings is one of the cheaper and easier ways to upgrade your skates.

Triple Eight ExoSkin Knee Pad

I have had these for about a month now and so far they have been the best I've tried yet. I spend a lot of time on my knees repairing things for work. I wear them daily and have been very happy with them so far. They fit comfortably, have a soft yet durable knee area, very breathable, and have Kevlar so they are abrasion resistant. They are so comfortable that I often times just leave them on all day. Makes it easier to get on the floor to play with dogs or small humans. I don't know how well they will work under tighter fitting pants but they are not all that bulky.

Other knee pads that I've tried and not liked so much are:

McDavid HexPad - I found that the padding on these gets compressed and eventually feels like I'm kneeling straight on the floor. Also they didn't breath well and ended up smelling like a locker room after a week or so.

AWP Non-Marring Polyester-Cap Knee Pads - I used these for a while but they ended up soaking up the sweat and smelled terrible in less than a week. Padding was ok but also had a habit of getting compressed or pushed to the sections that weren't getting knelt on.

Looks like my last post got blocked didn't like my link:

Snowboarding is more difficult to learn but easier to get good at. I learned to snowboard just before my 30th, but had been on skis since I was 4. I swapped primarily because I had heard it was easier on the knees.

1 Piece of advice, depending on where you ski get yourself a good pair of comfortable knee pads. I still wear mine as I ski the East where it's icy and man does it save the knees. Its protected me from getting a good bruising on my knees many many times. An added plus its super comfortable to take a quick stop on my knees as needed.

Also find yourself a good instructor that will teach you the proper way to fall. Keep your hands in a fist and don't use your hands to brace your fall. Use your forearms and try and keep a fist always. This is a huge tip to prevent you from breaking a wrist. You almost want to have a dive motion as you fall. Sounds way more complicated than it is. My first instructor would actually have us practice from our knees a few times and it was a huge help for me.

I'm also not into wearing pads (I figured out a pretty good alternative) but I definitely use wrist guards, they've already saved my palms more than once. Always wear a helmet, even if it's a garbage one its better than nothing. I wear full face because I'm not interested in having any unscheduled dental work done. I've already seen enough chipped teeth posted here on reddit (mostly on /r/ElectricSkateboarding).

Here's my full setup:

Wrist guards from this set https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B075ZT6X5M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Got the set because wrist guards alone were basically the same price. I use the knee pads if I am going on a trail or somewhere I think I will fall a lot.

I pretty much never use the elbow pads, instead, I always wear this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IW7VYQG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has padded elbows and shoulders (a very common place people get injured on onewheels) and is completely mesh so it's very breathable when riding. Plus it looks pretty badass, I'm surprised more people haven't gone this route.

For a helmet I am using Giro Disciple with MIPS, it's pricy but I figure I can resell it when I'm done. Some cheaper alternatives are the Demon Podium (you can get the mips version for 100 on ebay) and Bell Sanction. I believe there's a list floating around somewhere here on reddit of good helmets.

I use those DaKine wrist guards. They are marketed as snowboarding wrist guards as they are slim fitting and kind of have minimal support but they do still work. Another small gripe about them is they get like really wet from sweat super fast. Kinda weird thing but yea haha. I wear the k22 knee pads by Triple eight Triple 8 KP 22 Knee Pads (Black, Large) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000ASZAA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NVQBDbWXEDS90 they are full hard shell but fit relatively slim still definitely been a life saver for sure. I started skating aggressive with no pads and learned REAL quick that was a dumb idea. I even wear crash pants now for aggressive. I wear the hill billy crash pants but I think the ones made by triple eight would be more comfortable. I was just going for MAX protection haha.

Since nobody is helping you, I recommend protection for sports where movement is extremely important. Aka not skateboard or BMX pads. Try hockey or ergonomic MTB pads. You want a very "active" hinge to avoid chafing. Wearing a liner like tights under will help as well.

I use these elbow pads:

https://www.amazon.com/Bodyprox-Elbow-Protection-Large-Sleeve/dp/B072B9KB4L/

They look like the're in between the triple8 stealth and exoskin pads. I also have the knee pads, but they're pretty bulky so most of the time I wear football knee/shin pads that are thinner but also give me that shin protection.

Lately since its been cold I moved over to my rain pants that I bought for motorcycle riding and I LOVE onehweel riding in them. These aren't the exact ones I have because I've had mine for 10 years but they're similar: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LGX2WCS/

I took an unexpected low speed nosedive Saturday on a gravel logging road with those pants and elbow pads on. I fell straight on my side without catching myself at all and it was almost like jumping into bed it was that soft of a fall.

I started with a skate helmet, but have looked into gloves and knee pads. I like to ride in shorts, so the pads will help.

Considering a full face helmet now, but undecided. Visually it seems overkill, but I enjoy eating solid food.

I have gear from Triple Eight and Pro-Tec right now. Not really sure what's good as far as gear but it's definitely protected my knees and elbows. I have the Triple Eight Dual certified helmet, Triple Eight Elbow pads, and Pro-Tec Knee Pads. I personally just needed something quick and convenient so I shopped around on Amazon and got whatever looked decent. They've been working for me so far and saved me in my first major fall going downhill.

For helmets, make sure your helmet is certified. I first bought one that was not certified, and it's basically useless plastic and foam that does NOT protect your head apart from scrapes. You need to make sure any helmet you get has EPS Foam and is certified for what you're doing.

As for wrist protection, I would maybe suggest getting some slide gloves instead. I know you're more interested in cruising, so it might just be fine to have wrist guards, but it's possible you'll want to try out a slide or two in the future and that way you don't need to buy your hand protection twice. I have not yet learned to slide but have some gloves, and they definitely saved my hands when I took a bad spill. They have hard pucks on the palms which are used to support your body when you slide, but they work great to protect your hands as well.

So, follow up question. Im 6-1 175, not big boned. Ive worn many kneepads for my job, and they either are tight in the calf, loosein the thigh of vice versa. My calves will never keep a kneepad up on their own. I feel like a stretchy strap just below the crease in back of the knee would be best for me. My knees sweat bad in my work kneepads, dont know if thats weird or not, so i feel like whatever i get needs to be open or mesh or something that ventilates really well. Yeah, elbow pads may be unneeded , but ive worn them for downhill and they would seem to be less uncomfortable than kneepads, and id more like the forearm protection so why not? Im not looking for indestructo protection, more abrasion protection, and just some foam over the boney parts. Ive looked at the pocs, but i was also looking at this brand

Any thoughts?

u/verysmallschlong · 1 pointr/boostedboards

gloves are fine, but you can find a better pair for cheaper in a homedepot, however I'd suggest spending more for a pair with pucks.

like this

since it will handle an infinte amount of falls whereas regular gloves will need to be replaced every fall (90% of the time)

If you are gonna get soft knee pads get Demon Hypers instead, Gforms really aren't that good. They wear very quickly, their elastic doesn't hold up well and are designed to be worn underneath something (jeans/leathers). Max Dubler is a strong advocate for the Demon Hypers over the Gforms and I agree with him as well.

If you're looking for a great set of gear at a low price with excellent customer service, I HIGHLY recommend the Flybar protection kit. I bought a size large, of which, the knee pads were a tad small. I emailed their customer support and asked to swap out just the knee pads for XL's. They sent me an entire XL set, free of charge.

I fell at 22 mph and it didn't feel great luckily no broken bones. Haven't healed all the way but these fit well and will hopefully give me the confidence to get on and ride again!

187 looks promising may, don't want black ink on hands. Think Ill order that thanks. Decided on soft knee pads for flex and wearability -https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0059CWUC0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Also, found some awesome lights for safety- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HR2Y6N0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I have seen Serfas on this sub in other threads on lights and decided against; these have them beat on price and lumens by far.

I've been looking for decent pads for a while but can't really decide what to get.

I found these but they're not hard pads.

Not really sure which one to get :p
