Damn it, I'm slightly disappointed that no one has given a real answer yet. I'll start us off until someone with better engineering skills come along.

Assuming that an average person of about 70kg using this sled, with some additional equipment you've got about 90kg altogether.

We are going to assume that all the cats have been trained and conditioned to pull sleds since birth, so this removes extraneous variables involving motivation and whatnot.

The question now is determining how much weight each cat can pull. I tried googling information about cats pulling stuff but couldn't get much. However, given that cats can carry kittens in their mouth, we can make a conservative estimate of 3 kg per cat.

Essentially my estimate is 90/3 = 30 cats to pull a dogsled with an average weight person on it. Now I'm sure my model is very basic so any help building it would be appreciated. I haven't taken into account frictional forces and how fast the sled can be pulled yet.

this one has the high back and is safer. Our boy is pretty tall, so we bought him one for ~5 yo, much longer and he kind of slides around in it a bit.

edit: Jesh.. We bought ours used at some sale of donated kid's stuff at the Fairgrounds for like $10, I had no idea they sold for so much, ours is closer to this one - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OSL8KYK?psc=1

Something like this is good so you can go with him and keep the speed a little slower. As he grows up you can start waxing it to increase the speed before he graduates to his own high speed tube/sled.

It will be exactly like that if you get a fun sled. I recommend this one.

Then there's the Flexible Flyer

I bought a set of three from Amazon with enough foresight to get them here on time. You could still get them today and pay for overnight shipping.
