I have this problem too and there’s a few things that might help!

  • Mouth guards from the dentist will only help at night time and personally I find that sports ones are cheaper, thinner, easier to replace, and actually hurt my jaw less. This one is my personal favourite and is the easiest to re-do if you mess it up.

  • Mindfullness apps sometimes have timers and reminders to reduce your stress! Google Assistant can send you custom push notifications to relax.

Addressing underlying issues and work/life balance were big ones for me. Consciously telling my jaw to relax was super helpful and the night mouth guard helped the most because I didn’t wake up tense. Best of luck friend!

I used to have a boil guard but then I saw a thread on here about Sisu mouthguards and have been super happy with my purchase. They're slimmer so you can still talk and drink with them in.

I feel this really hard. I also have a family dinner tonight and I’m debating how much I want to participate. My partner showed me this short, ten minute TedTalk yesterday and it seemed to put things into perspective a little. Maybe it’ll help you too?

It can be a lot to handle, mentally. Depression is generally a side effect of dealing with chronic pain. Biochemically, it’s really hard on the brain to be in pain constantly. I know you’ve said you’ve dealt with other mental health issues before, but do you have access to a good counsellor? Do you have access to any chronic pain or mental health support groups in your area? Any friends or family you can talk or vent to about this kind of stuff? You always have us here. There is also a discord server if you need a live chat and want some company, whether at night, in a waiting room, or at an uncomfortable family dinner. Discord is easy to set up for mobile too if you’re new.

I’m a chronic tooth grinder, even in my sleep. I used a mouth guard for a few years, and it helped a lot with my jaw pain even during the day. I had one made at the dentist but after that stopped fitting I used this one and it helped get me out of the habit of tooth grinding. Topical creams have helped a lot with my jaw pain before. For TMJ and nerve pain, I use an essential oil blend that has CBD in it, but Voltaren or small amounts of Tiger Balm (not near the eyes) has helped before too.

I hope at least some of this is helpful. I’m sending my best to you.

What do you think of the price point? Why am I going to buy a hundred dollar piece of equipment instead of buying 175 of them for my kids?

I mean, I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but it just seems kinda like a large expense for something that could cost so little

I've spend so much money with boil and bites and it was such a waste of money. In the end, I just spent a little more on a custom mouthguard where I bit into it and sent it in to be manufactured. It fits SOOOO much better and I can even talk with it in my mouth. The cost wasn't even that much.

I have a pair of these.

I guess that means you'd believe I have fangs if I didn't tell you I was wearing a mouth guard beforehand. lol! :D

Same brand but different one. I used that one when I was playing hockey but it’s bigger and hard to breathe in. I use this one because it’s a lot smaller.

  1. Unfortunately, I don't know the area

  2. Eventually, you'll probably want to upgrade, but I used this before I got my Gladiator: https://www.amazon.com/Redline-Sportswear-Mouthguard-Vented-Case/dp/B01A1L8JG4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484086101&sr=8-1&keywords=redline+mouthguard

  3. I have paid $130 - $150 at both locations I've trained (downtown in one major city in the U.S. and downtown in one second/third tier city in the U.S.)

Venum Challenger Mouthguard

Not as thin and sleek as some of the other mentioned here but for the price + functionality, this is top notch. Can speak and breathe great after a few weeks of breaking it in/getting use to it. Solid protection, have taken full knees/elbows to the jaw no problem.

I wonder if something like a football or boxing mouth guard could be modified. Something like these:

https://www.amazon.com/SafeTGard-Adult-Super-Mouthguard-Strap/dp/B00ZY5MQXA

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002N6R28W

https://www.amazon.com/Shock-Doctor-Double-Strapped-Mouthguard/dp/B0028R9TPK/

This one looks about the best for this purpose:

You'd have to remove some material from all of them . . . but most are just a couple of bucks.

Which reviews btw? The reviews on Amazon seem decent enough. I understand your reasoning though...

I heard the best mouth guards are the custom made ones but they are pretty expensive and I don't think they worth it. You should probably get a mold and as far as I know, there aren't any special brands for them, and don't buy lower teeth guard it really is a waste of money.

Btw if you have braces buy a mold mouthguard suitable for braces.

Few suggestions -

For me, the type and quality of a mouthguard isn't really important because they are all practically the same aside from some gimmicks.

Anyone use a mouthguard that isn't from New Age Performance? I like my 5DS but I'm not in love with the price tag. I bought an Under Armour mouthguard for cheap cheap that just came in and I hate it (it doesn't form to your top teeth because the yellow surface is hard so it feels like it might actually be bad for my top row). Any other alternatives out there? I am mostly interested in the bottom-only design for breathing
