Merino wool socks

If you don't have any, they're amazing. This one is summer weight.

I am a fan of Fox River or Under Armor

If you're here for the long haul, it's your most important purchase. Kamik boots are my personal recommendation for a good value, but there are plenty of good brands. I see you're on foot a lot from other comments. YOU NEED HEAVY INSULATED BOOTS.

Also, the internet is always cheapest. You can make returns for free from amazon at khols.

Edit: Wool socks. Not a blend (except for Merino, which is only better because it can be less itch). W. O. O. L. Good pairs can be $20+ but when it's 0 degrees you're be happy you did it. You don't actually have to wash them every time you wear them (even if that sounds gross).

Snow gets you wet. If you want to be be comfortable, jeans will be your worst freaking enemy. Get some snow pants. Want to be warm and dry? Long johns. Or even flannel under the snow pants.

Good to know, thanks. I plan on wearing these wonderful socks with the shoes, but I'm thinking the color may be too similar. Should I re-lace the boots a different color to get some contrast?

I wear toe socks by Injinji. They come in different weights/thickness and are as close to being barefoot as a sock can get while still providing protection.

The downside is they are kind of expensive. I bought them on clearance sales.

Toe Socks I love these things as along distance hiker and biker. Fewer blisters, dry faster, toes actually feel less confined and I can wiggle and strtch them!

I just bought these, from some reviews I've read, they're supposed to displace moisture and help prevent blisters, going to where them under darn toughs. I had a three day trip in May where the trail was largely flooded. My feet got destroyed, so I'm going to give these a shot

Buy good boots. Danner Arcadia. Yes they are expensive but they will last years. I can get about 10,000 miles on them before needing new soles. which luckily they are recraftable so you won't need totally new boots. I have had one summer and one winter pair for 7 years. got new soles on them once and that was recently.

Next, get good true boot socks. NOT work socks. Fox River, Either go medium weight or heavy weight. Buy a pair for each day of the week you will need them. then you will only have to wash them once on your weekend.

They are both summer socks but the heavy weights will help in the winter.

Danner makes a steel toe variant of the Arcadia and recon. avoid them unless you are in a rough area and need the extra metal for a fight.

I wore the Steel toe variants and could walk 20 miles in a 10 hour shift, do that for 5-6 days a week for months and have zero foot pain.

If you absolutely can not afford the boots get the socks. they are very important. The proper padding will make a huge difference alone.

One other thing. Get shoe deodorizers if you walk a lot. leave them closed when you put them in every night and they will help will odar a ton.

I have this national geographic map hanging up next to my computer right now that I like. (1.5' x 4')

I'd second, erm third apparently, a good pair of socks.

...OR... A good AT book really gets my psyched up about the trail. (Appalachian Trials & A Walk for Sunshine are some favorites that I've read so far.)

...OR... A gift card to a nearby outdoor store, perhaps.
