From this subreddit's FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions): "How can I best add Weight to exercise X?:

>The most convenient way of adding weight to an exercise is using a dip belt. A backpack also works in the beginning, but with very heavy dips/pullups it's a bit riskier

>#We don't recommend weight vests. The resistance runs out quite soon, and they're very expensive.#

---

>Where do you get sandbags?

Vests with sandbags would be extremely annoying to adjust the weight. I have two ankle weights that are adjustable in increments to a total of 5lbs (approximately 2.27g) per ankle weight, or 10lbs (approximately 4.54kg) total. They take too long to adjust and are annoying.

Metal plates are much easier to adjust. The company "Mir" makes very good adjustable weighted vests that use metal plates, and depending on which model you purchase you can 'upgrade' the vest by purchasing additional plates.

For example: The 40lb model can accommodate a total weight of 60lbs with additional plates, with other models accommodating more:

  • https://www.amazon.com/MiR-Adjustable-Weighted-Vest-40/dp/B016X5I85O/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1490900070&sr=1-5&keywords=mir%2B40lbs%2Bweighted%2Bvest&th=1&psc=1

If you were to purchase a good DIP BELT and you were to spend about the same amount of money on BARBELL PLATES to load the belt up with you'd get more for your money. Additional plates over time could be purchased used or new for not very much cost over time.

If you want to add weight to your exercises you could use an adjustable vest, but using a dip belt to load vertical pulling (chin ups or pull ups) and vertical pushing (dips) will be less expensive and more versatile over time.

    ---

If you're considering purchasing a weighted vest: Really think about what you might use it for.#

You could probably save money by using a dip belt and barbell plates for your dip belt and bodyweight progressions with or without gymnastics rings for everything else. If you get barbell plates for the dip belt, you could always buy "adjustable dumbbell handles" to use those same plates as dumbbells for other exercises if you wish, or eventually even slap them onto a barbell if you want to, maybe even buy a weight bench down the line.

There's a reason as to why this is in the FAQ.

For 2 years I was thinking about getting an adjustable weighted vest. I've decided that, if I were to get one, Mir makes the best and it actually uses metal plates which are easy to adjust.

I can get a lot more out of the barbell plates that I have and my $20 United States Dollars dip belt that I bought a while ago and just keep doing ring or non-ring bodyweight progressions for everything else and save money. I haven't done any ring work yet as my non-ring work is keeping me busy and I have a ways to go to really max that stuff out. To me, after lots of time of thinking, I've decided that I agree with the FAQ statement.

I recommend taking a lot of time to think about this while keeping yourself busy with other things before you decide what you want to do. If you buy a really good Mir vest it can be expensive. At least compare prices and think about what you would actually use the vest for compared to gymnastics rings. Rings can take you very, very far with minimal set up and far less initial investment. You could still use a dip belt with rings or with bars. Don't let this be a "rush purchase".

Hopefully what I've written helps somehow.

There are a lot of opinions out there.

MiR makes the most comfortable vest, but they are super expensive.

ZFOsports makes one that's plenty comfy and usually less then half the price.

Those are the two best in my opinion. The others are just way too expensive for what you get.

EDIT: CAP Barbell also has one on amazon, and the prices are pretty fair. Unfortunately it does not fit as snugly as you will likely prefer, so it will require some home modification for our purposes. It's the same price as the ZFOsports vest, so I don't really see a good reason to not just go ahead and get the ZFO vest.

THe big advantage of the MRI vests is going to be for shorter people, because the weights are located higher up.

My solution for that is to buy the 80 lb vest, because the first 40 lbs of the ZFO vest are literally on the chest and upper back. For a smaller person, that's going to be perfect. We'll have some more specific guidelines and suggestions on the site.

CAP Barbell Adjustable Weighted Vest, 80 lb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015XTXYJG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_4H4aAb37PAQFV

Only downside I didn’t consider when buying it was that it might be dificult to do squats with it because it’s quite long. They have other models that only have a row of weights on each side, but since I wanted a rather heavy one to make progress with, the 80 lbs one is 2 rows on each side and they reach my legs somewhat so it’s harder to do leg stuff with it. I guess doing squats with this on depends on how tall or short people are.

I got mine at Dick's Sporting Goods. It says "Fitness Gear". It's not that different from this one on Amazon.

[This] (https://www.amazon.com/Maxi-Sport-Weight-Vest-Climber/dp/B00ZD31LBQ/ref=sr_1_15?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1496436139&sr=1-15&keywords=weight+vest) looks way more comfortable and prob does a better job.

Unfortunately you don't get to look all highspeedtacticaloperatorvelcrobeard.

edit: read the reviews and it might be garbage, but there are way better options out there if you can go without the MOLLE weave.

Podcasts are great for those really long training sessions. I would listen to a few episodes of the NoSleep podcast while out on a 3+ hour run. For the ruck pack, I use the GoRuck GR1 w/ 30lbs of bricks. For a weight vest, I use the 20lb MiR Weighted Vest

u/That_guy_theres · 2 pointsr/crossfit

I've used a MIR short style vest for the past 2 years love it solidly built. Like the short style cause less of you body is covered by vest so you don't over heat as fast also way more comfortable and easier to move in. There on sale right now on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/50LBS-Short-Adjustable-Weighted-Vest/dp/B00213DMUE

Check this out.

First question was if it fits someone rocking a 3XL shirt. Spoiler alert - the response suggests that it does.

Kind of a bummer that you have to buy different vests for different weights, but I suspect that isn't a total dealbreaker, since they aren't overly expensive until you get into the 60+ pound range.

I wouldn't recommend a belt as that will put weight primarily on your hips. I own this weighted vest and really like it. I haven't used it on stairs, but have used it for other workouts. I could see it working well on a stairmaster.

Edit- the benefit of a vest over a backpack with weights is that the vest is likely a more streamlined design and a more even distribution of weight closer to the body. A regular backpack is likely going to hold the weight lower and further from the body, which can hurt your back. A hiking pack might more evenly distribute weight, but again, wouldn't likely be as streamlined for an indoor workout. I'd encourage you to research some of the methods and pros/cons to adding weighted elements to cardio. There are definitely right and wrong ways to add weight. Where backs and repeated motion are concerned, I'd caution you against cutting corners. Take care of your back and body.

hill people gear.

Umlindi (with either Recon or Prairie belt)

I put 50 lbs in it to break it in.. see where it's going to cause fatigue.

all the weight sits on your hips.

compression straps keep the load stable - does not flop around when running.

for my frame, it's the best fitting pack I've ever owned.

911 calls for this come in from time to time. It usually ends up being someone wearing one of these weighted crossfit training vests (and almost always being worn by a non-white person).

Weight vests and shorts exist. Weight vests are more common.

Many variations of this exist.

This is the one I have. I got the 60 lbs one. It's pretty sturdy. I've been using it since April and there haven't been any tears, and the weights haven't lost any sand. If I were to get one again I would get the 80 lbs one so I didn't have to find a way to add extra weight.

Be careful with wrist weights. A lot of people have said that it can be dangerous due to the fact that you'll be doing snappy movements in VR that could cause more damage to joints and muscles than they'd help. I think something like a weighted vest might be a better option. But i'm no health expert, that's just what I've been reading on reddit =)

u/Jazz-un · 1 pointr/bodyweightfitness

So I woke up this morning and brought the trash can in right at the same the UPS guy was bringing in my weight vest. Perfect timing since I was about to start my pull day. It's a 40lb vest. I've been doing 6x5 on pullups for a while now, though sometimes I scheme 4x7. I started my routine with a 1RM and managed a pullup pretty easily at 40lbs of weight. I'm pretty sure I could go higher. I'm thinking at least 60lbs for a 1RM, it was that easy.

That said, the vest itself is pretty nice. I ordered this Cross101 40lb weighted vest. It feels snug and has a compartment for an iPod and headphones (didn't know this when I ordered it). I ordered it with the shoulder pads but the pads are pretty thin and don't make much of a difference when it's fully weighted. The actual weights are a sandy material in 4 pound increments, 5 on the front, 5 on the back. They can be taken out and put in pretty easily all things considered. I plan on using these weights on my ankles as well for Hollow Hold/Rock and L-Sits.

My only worry now that I have it and have tried it is that I hope I didn't go too light. My progress seems to be pretty quick and I don't want to outpace the vest too soon in terms of what I can handle strength wise.

u/JapanimeMind · 1 pointr/CosplayHelp

There's this weighted vest which is approximately $70, but will allow your friend to show of a green/ camo athletic long sleeved shirt underneath it with a heavy weight lifting belt. If you go this route, you can glue some straps to the underneath side of the vest and belt to make the look like they're attached. Then just add in any extra details you see fit.

I would recommend looking around for tactical vests or weighted vests until you find what you feel works best.

Edit: Pricing is different if you want the vest only ($70) it becomes more expensive if you add the weights.

u/Hellshield · 1 pointr/Fitness

I think that depends on the vest.
That was something I was concerned with when I got my vest I'll admit but I've had no problems with mobility so far.Granted mine is only up to 40 pounds. I can't speak for other types weighted vest though.

Here's the one I use btw

What kind of dip belt do you have if you dont mind me asking ?
