I want to recommend the Dire Saga.

The main character is a female anti-villain Doctor Doom expy, and I for one found the series highly entertaining.

It also explores (or at least touches on) a couple of topics that I found highly unusual, and I would love to see what the r/rational community might make of it.

I've linked the compilation of the first three books, but the author recently published the fifth one. If he keeps up his writing speed, then the sixth one should come out early next year.

As a science fiction fan, I would ask you to please not go the Pinocchio 2000 route with your AI. That is, you make it either a creature that winsomely wants to be human (think Data from Star Trek) or which is just a human being, period.

If you are going to create an AI think about how they might be DIFFERENT from humans. One of the best examples I know offhand is a story I read about a robot private investigator (not R. Daneel Olivaw -- might have been Hard Luck Hank) who was great at surveillance because he could put himself on standby during a stakeout ... just sit there, eyes glued to the window or whatever, nothing active going on in his mind, just his eyes waiting for something that indicated motion. Took all the tedium out for him, and for the reader.

Worst examples of Pinnochio 2000 consistently occurs in hentai, in which female sexbots don't like to have sex, not because they're programmed not to like what they are programmed to do, they just don't because ... female? Think about that, won't you? Or don't.

Oh, and they haven't mentioned the absolute best SF artificial intelligences ... Iain Banks' Culture minds.

> I miss Dire Worm

Have you read any of the books in the Dire Saga? Dire Worm is a crossover, but the author has, like, actual published books. As of the end of DIRE:TIME, it's still fairly early in Doctor Dire's story, but I am very impressed with where the series has gone thus far. It's not Worm, or Worm fanfiction, but it scratches the same sort of itch.

After working on my book for almost 4 years, I finally published it! Old School Evil is $4.99 on Kindle and free on KU, and the paperback is available for $12.99.
> I grew up quick. Turning into a monster and murdering your foster parents will do that to a guy. I ended up on the streets with nothing but a busted action figure and the love of the cartoons it came from.

> When someone claiming to not only be my real father but an actual cartoon bad guy, I couldn’t turn down his invitation to meet. His name - Major Max Malice the Menacing, retired leader of the Muttants, enemy of the Hurricanines, and former would-be world conqueror. But can I trust anything he says, even though he offers to teach me the way to control the beast inside me? And if he’s as treacherous as everyone says he is, am I strong enough to stop him?

> Old School Evil celebrates cartoons of the 80s and their colorful, over-the-top villains - Megatron, Miles Mayhem, Skeletor and the other villains that held our weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings hostage.

The first book in my series Meta just got a positive review on Boing Boing yesterday (but don't just take their word for it, also take my word, the guy who wrote the book). http://boingboing.net/2015/01/23/meta-the-meta-superhero-novel.html

Other guys I know who write in the genre and are pretty popular are Kevin Hardman ( http://www.amazon.com/Kevin-Hardman/e/B00CLTY3YM/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_9?qid=1422141240&sr=1-9 ) and SL Dunn ( http://www.amazon.com/Anthems-Fall-S-L-Dunn-ebook/dp/B00M7NPD28/ref=zg_bs_9059889011_20 ). I think both of them have books for $0.99 right now so they're definitely worth a look for original superhero stories.

Van Allen Plexico's Sentinels series is a great read, particularly if you're a fan of old school Avengers.

I wrote a five-book series called Vanguard and that involved a lot of the tropes that you see in the comics (though no magic). Lots of Marvel influence in that one, particularly the X-Men.

There's also Kid Sensation by Kevin Hardman. I've only read the first book, not the others, but I really enjoyed it.

u/AimlessZealot · 2 pointsr/litrpg

Yes, I generally am okay with that. We often imagine characters as idealized, so when a pretty girl shows up with a female MC it's more than likely the idealized version of her. In my opinion, a cover is an expression of the author (or publisher's, in the more traditional model) idea of the book's central character, goal, theme, or selling point. If your MC is a male and the only character on the cover is female, it's clearly not your central character, it is unlikely to be the book's "theme," and if it's your book's goal or selling point, odds are very good I'm in for some kind of romance/harem or damsel-in-distress story (which I can take or leave, personally).

As for harem/hero worship vs female MC? Yeah. It's in stuff like how the female character is posed. Is it an action shot? Are they positioned to "show off the assets" or beckoning the reader? Does her appearance serve to suggest she's capable, or is she wearing impractical but figure-flattering clothing?

Here are some examples of the difference:

(Female MCs)

Mitigating Risk by Blaise Corvin, Book 1

Temple of Sorrow by Carrie Summers

VERSUS

(Romance/Harem/Wish Fulfillment)

Delvers LLC by Blaise Corvin

Dungeon Deposed by William D Arand

NOTE: There's nothing wrong with the latter category, just not my thing.

In the first two, we are given moments that are clearly about defining the character, often in the middle of some activity or action, and more effort is spent framing the moment than selling the womanhood of the subject. In the latter two, it's clearly a beauty shot in each one. You couldn't tell me what activity they are in the middle of, or where in the story this might happen. The pictures basically exist only to convince me that there is a woman in this story and she is pretty.

How's that work for ya?

We've got a few ideas over at LitRPG Forum.

I write myself, but looking at your books listed/read, I'd recommend Endless Online. It's getting a lot of great reviews.

Good luck in your quest!

Kid Sensation is a pretty good series, by Kevin Hardman. His writing get's better as time goes on, and you can get the first three books bundled for $7.99 if you are willing to take a chance on him. Otherwise they are either $3.99 or $4.99 for the ebook (you can also order them on Amazon if you want a paperback).

Kingdom of Heroes, by Jay Philips, is also pretty interesting. It revolves around the murder of a superhero, one of the strongest in the country, and the man they release from prison to find the perpetrator. Some people have compared it to Watchmen, and while I don't find it to be as good, there are a handful of similarities. You can get it here.

A desperate gamble leads Jakson to an otherworldly artifact: armor from another age. His discovery propels him into a deadly game of knights, a game of treachery, violence, and corruption.

Threats arise from beyond the kingdom and from within. Allies emerge from companions old and new. War is coming, but Jakson's true fight is not on the battlefield.

A high-tech, high fantasy mashup.

The Hangman's Owl brings to life a Steampunk Superhero in a dark near-modern Age. It is the story of costumed superpowers when confronted with the strange, weird, and downright magical. The book is FREE on Amazon today, September 18, 2019, and also 'free' forever on Kindle Unlimited.

"Gotham by Gaslight by way of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." - my pitch to you, at r/Fantasy

Description:

20 years ago the Hangman’s Owl disappeared.

Hero. Villain. Monster. Fiend.

The mysterious creature has had lingering effects on the beleaguered nation, long since at odds with its own oppressed people. Without its omniscient avenger, crime runs rampant in the streets, and the country crumbles before foreign besiegers. The downtrodden and mighty alike have nowhere to turn.

20 years later, ironclad destroyers take to the seas and unmanned autonomous airships blanket the sky. The continent is charged for a coming World War when someone has finally come looking. Who, or what they will find when they finally run the Owl to ground, is another matter entirely. Some monsters are better left in their fetters. Others, however, may save more lives than anyone has ever imagined once they are truly unleashed...

Book 2 in the series also available. Think of one as my 'A Study in Scarlet', and two as the start of serialised, episodic adventures a la 'The Adventures...', 'The Memoirs...', 'The Return...', 'His Last Bow', and 'The Case Book...'.

Title: FLOOR 21: Dark Angel

Genre: Superhero Science Fiction, Military Science Fiction

Word count: 360,000

Link: Book 4

Or, if you haven't read the previous entries in the series, try Book 1.

Page: 1,385

Hello! I'm sort of celebrating. After 3 years of working on my fourth book, it's finally out. To set the stage for the world of FLOOR 21, the original book takes place in a single tower. The synopsis for that first book is:

> As humanity lives out the remainder of its existence at the top of an isolated apartment tower, young Jackie dares to question Tower Authority and their ban on traveling into the tower's depths. Intelligent and unyielding, Jackie ventures into the shadows of the floors below. But will her strong will and refusal to be quiet—in a society whose greatest pride is hiding the past—bring understanding of how humanity became trapped in the tower she has always called home, or will it simply be her undoing?

So the elevator pitch for Book 1 is "The last of humanity is trapped in the top of an apartment tower with no memory of how they got there. One girl wants to find out why." It was originally published years ago now, and my contract's almost up for renegotiation, so I'm trying to push my work hard this year. This fourth book takes place outside the Tower, so if you're in the mood for a lengthy series that blends young adult, science fiction, horror, and mystery, which eventually culminates in a military-super hero science fiction in book 4, then come join everyone else who has read and enjoyed the series!

I'm the debut author of a superhero sci-fi novel called Anthem's Fall, and I'd like to reach out to the fantasy community here and offer up E-copies of my novel to anyone who might be interested in giving it a read.

The tricky part with being a debut author is that it's very hard to find readers. In that sense, I'd like to provide an e-book of my novel to anyone who wants to give it a whirl. I define Anthem's Fall as "Michael Crichton meets Marvel Comics". It's kind of a Dragonball Z/Superman/Thor type story aimed at an older audience. It currently has over 50,000 reads on Wattpad in its first month, but I'd love even more eyes on it.

Check the book out on my website http://www.sldunn.com/ or on Amazon at http://amzn.com/B00M7NPD28

Do reach out if you'd like a copy!
