I've successfully used reverse drill bits on head bolts that sheared at the surface, but never on a bolt in a tree.

I'd start with the 1/4". Maybe use a center punch to make an indent in the center first.

Otherwise you may be ok with removing 1/4" of tree material around the bolt (using a 3/4" hole saw) so you can pound a 7/16" or 12mm (slightly less diameter than the bolt so it'll grip the bolt/threads tight) 16-point sacrificial socket over it and back it out with a ratchet. The lag bolt is 10 inches - still gives you 8 inches in the tree. Maybe then use a 3/4" lag bolt in this one hole to replace it and take up the gap cause by removing the extra material.

edit: added the metric socket

edit #2: forgot the hole saw will have a bit in the middle - either shorten that or use a wood boring bit.

straight fluted easy out.. a set of tap sockets.. tap sockets are specials for use with threading taps.. there is a chance one will fit the straight fluted easy out..

so you can get a socket on it way down the spark plug hole..

chances are somebody cross threaded the spark plug and just cranked it in till it almost broke.. or you exerted enough force when it seized taking it out.. that you snapped the spark plug in half.
