Keeping it under $70 at that point is gonna get tricky if you need to buy all those things, too. But here's what I'd recommend.

-Hario hand grinder ($30)
-Any digital scale, maybe upgrade eventually ($14)
-Any kettle, something like this should be like $10 at Walmart or something
-Aeropress ($33)

That's $87. If you just heat water in a microwave container if you already have that, that'll save you $10.

Or swap the Aeropress for this. melitta pour over ($6) and some filters ($6). These make good coffee, too, and will save $21 off the price of the aeropress (though you'll need more filters eventually)

Many of these you'll eventually want to upgrade to something better. But these will get you started.

A cheap gooseneck kettle and a plastic Hario V60. You will need filters too.

If you want to spend a little more this set has it all.

Keep in mind that a scale is extremely helpful too. If you don’t want to spend the money on a grinder, which everyone is going to recommend, just get pre-ground, quality coffee. I recommend HappyMug online. Happy Mug makes great coffee and will grind it for you before shipping. They also have an awesome little timer for $5 that is helpful at first If you’re using your phone for recipes and stuff.

I use this one. Even though that little ball on top is plastic, it is strictly on top. There is no plastic on the inside.

This one is glass and has no plastic.

You may also look at an actual Japanese tetsubin. These are pure iron (not those iron teapots with ceramic on the inside everyone sells) kettles but tend to be mondo expensive.

Whistling kettles are only for boiling water. You might be better off with a Turkish style double kettle...tea leaves go in the upper pot, and you add water from the lower pot as needed. Very functional for black tea, and it was magnificent in my student days when I was mainlining tea all day long while studying.

So it's a two part solution, but this is what we're doing this year, and on a few test runs it's been absolutely amazing.

First, we're heating our water with a standard stovetop kettle like this one.

Then we're making the coffee in an Aeropress. When I first saw there I thought people were unusually obsessed over what seems like a simple coffee maker. I'm now a convert. Don't confuse its over-simplistic design with over-simplistic coffee. This thing makes a sick brew.

I like dark roasts, and prefer African coffee beans if I get a choice in it, they have a nice deep and spicy flavor. I get them as whole roasted beans from a coffee shop in town, which roasts them fresh every couple of days. If you are looking to get into it, you can just search for coffee roasters in your area, and if there really aren't any I'd look for roasters who sell single origin beans online. In a pinch, Starbuck's single origin beans are good too, just really expensive for what they are.

I use a hand mill grinder, a gooseneck kettle, and a Chemex coffee maker and filters. It sounds like a lot, but all that together is still cheaper than a decent drip machine. You grind the beans with the grinder (I use 3 heaping tbps of grounds), bring the water to a boil and then let it sit for a minute (letting it come down just a little in temp keeps the coffee from being acidic, the gooseneck also helps with that). Pour a little on the grounds in the filter, and let it sit for about 30 seconds wet to bloom. Then pour the rest and just let it drip through.

The chemex makes the smoothest, best tasting coffee I've ever had, and I've tried quite a few different methods. If you like it stronger, a french press might be better for you.

Stuff:

Chemex Coffee Maker

Filters

Hand Mill Grinder

Goose Neck Kettle

Well, you could buy this and then this and also these and then follow these directions.

You can probably find all of this stuff locally. Persian tea is pretty similar so you could try a middle eastern shop. There's a grocery store/market next to the Pita Inn in Skokie that might be worth checking out. Also fresh-from-the-oven pitas - so good.

A big thanks to everyone who came on here and offered their advice and product recommendations. Such a positive experience from my first post ever on Reddit.
As an update, I want to let you all know my final set up:

  • Chemex 6-Cup
  • Hario Skerton Pro grinder
  • Natural Unbleached Chemex filters
  • gooseneck kettle with thermometer by nTertain
  • Ozeri Pronto Digital Kitchen Scale

And beans roasted by my local coffee shop. I brewed my first batch today and it came out strong. Not bitter, but strong. I’m adjusting for a coarser grind and trying again tomorrow.

I was looking for pour overs that specifically were filter-less for the reasoning of: more eco-friendly and more cost-effective for not having to buy filters every time. I chose that brand after researching different ones on Amazon, looking at reviews, etc. That one had the best reviews and seemed to be sufficient. Do you think otherwise?

My budget is somewhere around $100-$125

  1. What do you use? I'm trying to not spend crazy money if I don't need to, especially if I can just use a regular kettle. But at the same time, if I will get a better cup of coffee with the gooseneck, I will purchase that.
Here is the one I have in my Amazon cart:

Gooseneck Pour Over coffee and tea kettle with built in thermometer - Large Stainless Steel 40fl oz capacity https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B078WFBDZD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_pjFzCb8GQN6W6

  2. Okay, cool. Bc I'm purchasing a food scale that looks to be decent!

  3. What grinder do you use? I was thinking of getting this one:

KRUPS F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder with Stainless Steel Blades, 3-Ounce, Black https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00004SPEU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WiFzCb6C8ME5G

    What do you think?

Actually, after looking more now, this grinder looks the best.

SHARDOR Coffee Bean Grinder Electric, Removable Bowl with Stainless Steel Blade, Black. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07FPDJ1FK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nmFzCb4BEZDFX

I’m using this scale to weigh 50 grams of beans.

I’m using this grinder set to 28.

I’m using this kettle to heat the water to 200 °F.

I add 800 grams of water to the ground coffee and follow the Hoffman method.

Comes out perfect every time.

The Bonavita's are great but if you want something a little cheaper and a little less convenient then this style is not a bad option at all.

I really like the V60, and the value and usability that it provides.

You can try all sorts of different methods with the V60, with different pour times and water distribution, where as that isn't as much of a thing with the FP. Also the V60 will have a little less body, which can be a good thing as it will bring out the unique aspects of the bean you are using a little more. Other than that, just get a grinder and a gooseneck kettle such as this using the rest of your budget.

I don't know if this counts, but it's the first thing I thought of when you said orange! There are few things more delicious than chocolate oranges :)

If that doesn't count, there are like a THOUSAND orange kitchen appliances, and they're all amazing. Orange ice cream maker, orange cookware, orange kettle, orange immersion blender, orange food processor...the list goes on and on!

u/NorthernSky · 1 pointr/Cooking

I received this one as a wedding present almost 3 years ago. I love it and have absolutely no complaints (it comes in other colors too).

u/Dried_Apple · 1 pointr/tea

I just have a plain Kitchen Aid kettle for the stove. I'm not a fan of the keeping the water hot all day ones because of the energy wasted, even if it's only a small amount. It's crazy quick, silicone grips, and the whistle part can be kept out of the way. I got it during the annual manufacturer sale.

u/Jade_Orange · 1 pointr/britishproblems

For the stove top

Cheap and unkillable for the electric variety

u/clearwind · 1 pointr/trees

My mom did that to one of these when I was a kid.... Twice.

u/buford419 · 0 pointsr/tea

I found it on Amazon US too, but it's a bit expensive. You can probably try steel wool, it seems to basically be the same thing.
