I remember reading this book as part of the American Girl Book club: Bat 6. It's always stuck with me. It's about two girls (12ish or so) who make friends while playing softball. But one of the girls is Japanese and ends up getting sent to an internment camp. Or maybe, she's just gotten out of one? I don't really remember, but it's VERY, VERY good.

It deals with how they just want to be friends, but both sets of adults in each of their lives is saying bad things about the other's race.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I think it's more about the white girl working through her misgivings about the Japanese girl in the beginning. Guess it's time to reread it!

There's a fictional book called Boy Toy about one that's pretty good.

A Summerland movie by Guillermo del Toro would be pretty neat.

Bottom of the 33rd was a very well written look at both the longest game in history as well as the players, ballpark staff, and fans in attendance. It puts the game in perspective.

If you're more into fiction and don't mind diving into a book written for Young Adults Summerland is a very enjoyable read. But it sounds like you would like more baseball in the book.

The Boys of Summer has a great blend of baseball and real life, talking about baseball in the 1930s and 40s and the hearts that broke when the Dodgers (and Giants) moved from New York to California.

The Crazy Horse Electric Game?

>School Library Journal:
Gr 8 Up The title refers to the game for the Eastern Montana American Legion baseball championship, as the star pitcher, Willie Weaver, leads his team against the powerful squad from Crazy Horse Electric. But the emphasis of the novel shifts quickly away from baseball after Willie suffers a head injury in a water skiing accident. Unable to accept the loss of his athletic prowess, the pity of others, and his parents' troubled marriage, Willie runs away and ends up in the inner city of Oakland, California. After being beaten and robbed by a gang, Willie is rescued by a black bus driver/pimp, who enrolls Willie in a school for troubled youths. Thanks to the understanding staff of the school, Willie regains his mental and physical abilities and his self-confidence. He returns home to Montana, however, to learn that there is no longer a place for him in the lives of those he left. If nothing else, Crutcher manages to cram many of the most popular themes of young adult novels into this book, as Willie faces the crib death of his sister, divorce, drugs, sexual feelings, gang violence, mental handicaps, physical handicaps, prostitution, child beating, and more. Willie's present-tense narration is annoying, and does not work well for this story that covers several years. The author is best in the effective description of Willie's effort to recover from his injury. But this is the best that can be said for a novel that often seems contrived. The book is called Wildball, it’s a young adult novel about a guy playing in a summer baseball league and how he deals with some traumatic memories and navigates his new relationships. You can buy it here if you are extra curious! Thx Coldplay
