I use the Boom! toothy tabs from Lush (containing charcoal) and have definitely noticed a difference to tooth brightness and my overall oral health :D I started using them because the enamel on one of my teeth is destroyed and was very prone to plaque formation/slight yellowing and I read that bicarb based tooth cleansers can help, so I started using toothy tabs. Here is the link if you're interested: https://uk.lush.com/products/boom

My parents from India also have many anecdotes about their parents using a charcoal based tooth powder and that by using this they were able to maintain sparkling, white teeth until their old age. I have never tried it myself but have many family members who swear by it (and have blindingly white teeth to boot). Here is a link to it: https://www.amazon.com/Monkey-Brand-Black-Powder-Ayurvedic/dp/B000BP0NAQ

Good luck!!

Actually I'm kinda interested in this one. I remember someone mentioning a black toothpowder. Ah - found it!

And I would have ordered it if the cockbag vendor would ship to Canada - they had MR GLO too.

hundreds of dollars per year? What kind of toothpaste are you buying?

Using your same source, it says

>An average travel toothpaste is only about a third of the size of a normal toothpaste. Most brands have a volume of 12 ml to 25 ml and only weigh between 19 g and 45 g. Compare that to a standard tube of toothpaste, which usually has a volume of 75 ml and weighs between 90 g and 100 g.

So, let's figure we can get 30 brushings out of 100g of toothpaste.

Here is 525g of toothpaste at Amazon for $6.99. So, thats about 5.25 * 30 = 157 brushings, let's say an even 75 days if you brush twice a day.

You could buy 5 of those, and brush your teeth all year for $35. If you want to brush three times a day, that pack would last you about 50 days, meaning you'd need 8 of them for the entire year. That is about $56.

You need to stop buying overpriced toothpaste.

It's this one but without the logo. It's not bad.

I use the arm and hammer toothpaste and have found it does good double duty as a blood scrub.

Arm & Hammer PeroxiCare Healthy Gums, Fresh Mint, 6 Oz (Pack of 6) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001E77OCU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DWeMzbR808WW0

Try Tanner's Tasty Pastes - no bubbling, no intense mint, and there are a lot of very positive reviews on Amazon from parents of sensitive or autistic kids.

u/MediumEcho · 2 pointsr/ZeroWasteVegans

These are the only vegan toothpaste tabs with fluoride I've been able to find. I've been using them for a while and I like them. They are imported from Germany though so I'm not sure how much waste is reduced by having them shipped to the US.

u/nimhnimh · 2 pointsr/Frugal

So is it safe to use toothpaste with baking soda and peroxide? For example, this is the toothpaste that I use: http://www.amazon.com/Arm-Hammer-PeroxiCare-Peroxide-Toothpaste/dp/B001E77OCU

u/programjm123 · 2 pointsr/vegan

Look for certifications on the producer's website. The best certification is the leaping bunny certification since they actually investigate the company.

I personally use this toothpaste

I use both. Epsom salt baths 4 times a week after a workout and I take this form of magnesium:

https://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-Magtein-90-Count/dp/B00JEZQAFG/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1469285530&sr=8-1&keywords=now+Magnesium+Threonate

So with what I get in the Epsom salt baths and this supplement, I've got Magnesium covered. So instead of using Fluoride rinses, I was thinking about using this:

https://www.amazon.com/Apagard-M-Plus-toothpaste-nanohydroxyapatite-remineralizing/dp/B0016GCZQO/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1484008970&sr=8-1&keywords=Apagard+M-Plus+toothpaste+115g

Any thoughts? Or does anyone have something else to use to replace Fluoride?

TOOTHBRUSH

This is the electric toothbrush I use and recommend: Sonicare Flex Care Plus. It is cheapest at Costco but comes in a pack of 2. It's important to replace the brush head every 3-4 months. Sonicare now has a subscription service to automatically send you a new brush head when it's time to replace, or you can buy the brush heads when you need them; they come out to approx $9 each on amazon but you can get 6 for $50 at Costco and they oftentimes have a $10 instant rebate. If you need to use a manual toothbrush, I recommend the Nimbus manual toothbrush. These Wisps are really handy when you can't brush after eating.

FLOSS

The floss I recommend is Dr. Tung's Smart Floss and you can use this  Floss Holder to make it easier to use. (Amazon only sells the floss in packs of 3 or 6 so if you want to purchase a single pack you can find it at Whole Foods, Bristol Farms, or Sprouts.) A Waterpik can also be a great tool, this one is a Handheld Waterpik and is more convenient to use. You can use it in the shower and it takes up less counter space.

TOOTHPASTE/MOUTHWASH

This Crest Gum and Sensitivity  paste is one of my favorites and I like Act Total Care mouthwash. When choosing a toothpaste or mouthwash, look for "sodium fluoride" as an active ingredient.  It's best to stay away from mouthwashes with alcohol in them and whitening/charcoal pastes because the abrasives in them can damage the teeth. If you use a whitening rinse with hydrogen peroxide, only use it 2-3 times per week to avoid making the gum tissue sensitive. Other than that, whatever you prefer is just fine.

WHITENING

For an inexpensive whitening treatment Crest White Strips are a good option.

i am not surprised by this. messed up to think that it was a big thing to add fluoride to bottled water when i was a kid and market it as healthy. all you have to do is research the origins of fluoride and how it came to be in commercial toothpaste to see it's probably not the best thing to be using for improving health. honestly, i do not think fluoride does shit for teeth anyways (not IME at least). MAYBE the naturally occuring kind does, but not the industrial waste they add into dental products.

i have always had bad/weak teeth. but when i was a kid, i was prescribed toothpaste with extra fluoride and it just made my teeth more sensitive to everything and i still got crazy amounts of cavities. when i got older, i switched to fluoride free tom's toothpaste, but still didn't see much positive change in my teeth. after researching on my own, i wondered if it could be the glycerin so i decided to try a DIY method. the only thing that has helped was when i started making my own from coconut oil, calcium, trace minerals, clove oil, and neem tooth powder. this made my teeth whiter and less sensitive within maybe 2 weeks. i don't see any valid reason to use regular toothpaste ever again or get fluoride treatments at the dentist.

Very good! Here are 2 more suggestions for a real luxurious brush and dental hygiene.

A waterpick which you would use first to clean between your teeth and the gum line, then floss and brush. Its on sale now for $23 shipped.

Sensodyne has a great new toothpaste out - i love it. I get it for $4 at walmart

https://www.amazon.com/Sensodyne-Pronamel-Intensive-Toothpaste-Strengthening/dp/B07K15VPD4

Do you need these 2 things? Not at all - but they help out a lot.

Vanilla Ice cream tooth paste. My kids love it. And I'm a kids dentist.

u/SirSeizureSalad · 1 pointr/SebDerm

I've tried 25+ different fluoride free toothpastes and none of them were that great. Finally found Dr. Sheffield's Peppermint and I've been using it ever since. I'm not sure which one you like, but if you're looking, this one has been the best by far.

seconding.
i like this one

something as simple as a friggin’ flip-top tube of toothpaste has saved my sanity and my relationship.

Its this?

GC Mousse 40g Tube - 1 Pcs - Mint Toothpaste https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QPD12L9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_CQsoDbYP2E14S

If it is I would just have to replace my toothpaste with it or is it something different?

u/Trensformer · 1 pointr/Epilepsy

Rinse with peroxyl/orajel (or just 50/50 water and hydrogen peroxide) four times a day; after every meal and before bed. Brush with salt toothpaste. This will cut healing time down quite a bit.

u/hongsedechangjinglu · 1 pointr/explainlikeimfive

Heads up, this toothpaste called Closys is also SLS free. I switched to it after Tom's stopped making their SLS-free toothpaste and it works great.

u/icecoldplayer · 1 pointr/Epilepsy

To speed up healing:

Use salt toothpaste instead of your regular kind.

Only drink water.

Avoid acidic foods like citrus.

Rinse with Colgate Peroxyl, Orajel, or a mixture of 50% water and 50% hydrogen peroxide throughout the day, particularly after eating.

Ajona, but I do not know if it is sold in UK. The container is aluminium. Here (Slovenia) it is sold in stores.

I know nothing about this, but worth a try

I have a few patients who swish with a topical anesthetic which numbs entire mouth, which helps with gagging when doing x-rays or impressions. Also, nitrous oxide can suppress the gag reflex in some people. Give it a try.

If you just want a good toothpaste recommendation I use Euthymol, but apparently I'm a weirdo because I like the taste of Pepto-Bismol (which this tastes like). Makes my mouth feel super clean, but I'm an irregular smoker and very rarely drink coffee, so stain remover wise I couldn't say.
