This mixture is as close as you can legally get to Agent Orange. I use it on my 200ft gravel drive, paver walkways, along fencerows, under my deck and anywhere else I don't want stuff to grow. Lasts for weeks, maybe months depending on rainfall:

  • 6oz per gallon Glyphosate (commonly known as Round-Up)
  • 12oz per gallon of Pramitol 25E
  • 6oz per gallon Triclopyr 4E
  • A few drops of Dawn or any other dish soap

Glyphosate and Triclopyr attack through the leaves, Pramitol attacks through the roots and acts as a ground sterilizer so new plants won't grow. The Triclopyr is optional, I simply include it because it's more effective at killing woody plants (young trees or other brush) than Glyphosate.

Dish soap helps break the surface tension so it sticks to the leaves better. It won't kill quickly, but you'll notice the plants yellowing and drying up within a few days. Two weeks, they will be brown and dead.

A few things to note. Don't spray around the base of any trees or other plants you don't want dead. It will kill a 50yr old oak tree as easily as it kills dandelions. Also, don't leave this stuff sitting in your pump-sprayer for weeks, anything leftover needs to be used up within a day or two. Not sure what chemical reaction is going on there, but if you leave it in your sprayer too long, it will start to crystallize and clog everything up.

EDIT: These chemicals are all available at Tractor Supply if you have one nearby. If your county has a noxious weeds department, you can usually get it from there as well. The Pramitol is available in a granular form as well so you could use it in a push-spreader.

This. I put some of the below stuff down this past April and have really noticed a difference in the amount of crab grass that I have this year. Way easier than pulling it by hand. Just remember that timing is everything with preemergent herbicide. You have maybe a two week window for it to work properly.

The Andersons Pro Turf Barricade Granular Pre-Emergent Weed Control (up to 10,000 sq ft.) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NZ2BMMK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IU0mDbP46RWMB

Is that spurge maybe? Google for some pics and compare from different angles.

If it is, you can get this: http://smile.amazon.com/Monterey-LG-5600-Spurge-Herbicide/dp/B000FBKUHC?sa-no-redirect=1

It's gor Dicamba, Triclopyr, and MCPA. You could probably get similar results with something else with the same ingredients.

It might seem expensive for a pint of herbicide, but this a concentrate you mix - it looks like they recommend 1.25-2 ounces per two gallons of water, which works out to nearly 26 gallons of ready-to-spray herbicide

If you didn't get pre-emergent down in time that is okay, you might just have an abundance of grassy type weeds later on this season. Prodiamine has a tighter window for application, and it must go down when soil temps are around 55 degrees. If you look for a product with the active ingredient of Dithiopyr, your window opens up a bit for application because it can still be effective until the first stage of crab grass growth. The only problem is that dithiopyr can be more expensive than prodiamine.

Side note: pre-emergents are mostly effective against crab grass and other grassy weeds, if you have a lot of broadleaf like clover, dandelion, etc. you can easily take care of those with a "broadleaf" weed control like the 3-way herbacide I mentioned. Something with the 2,4-D ingredient is what you want. Get the concentrate in a bottle and mix it up in a 1 gallon pump sprayer with a little bit of dish soap or baby shampoo to act as a surfactant (it will help the chemical stick to the leaves better). Just don't use something like round-up that is a "NON-selective" herbacide and will kill gras.. 2,4-D is perfectly safe.

This works https://www.domyown.com/speedzone-lawn-weed-killer-concentrate-p-1515.html

Or look for the Spectracide brand at Home Depot, I've had great luck with that and it's super cheap. Look for 2,4-D and Dicamba. https://www.amazon.com/Spectracide-Weed-Stop-Lawns-Concentrate/dp/B07BBSC88Y

If you get a liquid pre emergent you can mix it and Roundup in a sprayer so that you only have to spray once. Kills current and future weeds all at the same time.

My favorite pre emergent is [Southern Ag Surflan A.S](Southern Ag - 12401 - Surflan A.S. - Pre-Emergent Herbicide, 32oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002HJDN7E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZndECb480TCXD).

u/nitroretro · 2 pointsr/lawncare

So get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ortho-Crabgrass-Ready-Spray-Attachment-32-Ounce/dp/B005LD2GNK/ref=pd_sim_86_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=41ZG50R2lkL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR83%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=N9KZPVNAYVYKZBS1ZSEK

And start killing them now and wait til fall to reseed? This is my 1st time owning a home and 1st time having to worry about a lawn so I honestly not sure of what to do other than some information I researched online.

u/konnerbllb · 2 pointsr/lawncare
  1. Generally, no. Blanket applications can often miss areas. Its recommended that you spot spray with a 24D product, this is safe for grass but kills most broadleafs weeds. I like to do one application, wait three weeks and see if anything else has germinated. Usually just doing it twice in the right time period is good enough for the rest of the season. If you don't have a spray tank to mix concentrate in (cheapest/cost effective) then I would use something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ortho-Crabgrass-Ready-Spray-Attachment-32-Ounce/dp/B005LD2GNK/

  2. Take care of the weeds and throw down a balanced starter fertilizer. If you want to green up faster put down 'ironite' with the fertilizer. Don't spill on concrete, it will stain. Summer is here, I don't know how hot it is in NC yet but make sure you're lawn is receiving enough water for a fertilizer application.

Aeration has it uses like on a golf courses or you drive heavy equipment across your yard. Normal use yards don't get compacted enough to warrant the use. I use a soil conditioner and it really helps.

Pre emergent in the spring can't use it now cause it would block your grass seed from growing. You can use https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/cr/B005DUTNF0/ref=mw_dp_cr
Pre and post seed but read the directions 3 times to make sure you apply it correctly. It will cause your grass to whiten but it will come back. It's a little pricey but it will knock out a lot of weeds.

In the spring use something like this
https://www.amazon.com/Dimension-2EW-Dithiopyr-Pre-Emergent-Herbicide/dp/B0056650Z8
Or anything with dimension in it.

u/patl1 · 2 pointsr/lawncare

Okay. Serious compaction is a different ballgame. In that case tilling is probably a good idea. In that case, seriously condsider a high powered pre-emergent like Barricade or Dimension. You can get generic barricade or generic dimension relatively inexpensively on the internet. If you're intimidated by the price tag, keep in mind that a bottle that size will last you multiple years, and will be a good investment given the weed suppression it will provide.

In some climates, Tenacity is also both a pre- and post-emergent herbicide. But that depends on your climate zone and what you're going to sod with. The final determination will ultimately be up to you.

Since you asked, the pros use a geotextile, rather than a weed barrier:

https://www.amazon.com/SHANS-Ground-Barrier-Geotextile-Landscape/dp/B077M956QB

Costs more, but weeds will not come up from below.

Unfortunately, it does nothing for seeds that root above it.

Im sorry about the delayed reply as I was stuck on the roof...
I used Ugly Shingles Roof Cleaner

u/Pizzabagelpizza · 1 pointr/gardening

I cover plants that already have cages or supports. Individually or sometimes in pairs. The netting drapes over the top and I secure the bottoms with a few garden staples. I just pull out a staple or two and lift the netting when I want to access the plant.

I use this type of netting, cut to fit. If I were going to try to do a wider area, I would use something more like a micromesh with hoop supports. That allows you to do a bigger area and the birds and animals won't get stuck in it like they would in a netting.

>The spectracide with quinclorac is really good against crabgrass in bermuda. Just don't use when hot as it will kill back some of the bermuda or spot treat. It might bleach but not kill typically.

i'm in Merrimack NH and dealt with a massive clover invasion. I used the new Roundup weed killer (not the glyphosate one that kills grass) and within 1 week the clover was gone. My KBG and TTTF grass was completely unharmed. Picked it up at Home Depot

The Acclaim Extra does more of the work in suppressing Bermuda. The Turflon Ester helps some, but is there mostly to lessen the impact of the AE on the Fescue. You need the AE. TE will work on its own if you have a little sprout pop up here and there, but it won't dent it long term on what you have going on.

I got a pint of AE each year. I use seedworldusa.com and coupon code seed4life for 10% off. They're the cheapest I've found: https://www.seedworldusa.com/products/acclaim-extra-herbicide-1-pint

Triclopyr: https://www.seedworldusa.com/products/triclopyr-4-herbicide-1-gallon (Triclopyr is the active ingredient in Turflon Ester. It's the exact same stuff, they just haven't paid for the labeling to approve it for use on ornamental lawns. You aren't really supposed to buy it this way, but it's far cheaper and I do it. Triclopyr is also a great broadleaf herbicide so you can use it other times of year to knock out most weeds.)

The other stuff I buy by the gallon, as eventually it gets used, it's far, far cheaper, and I have extra to help friends with when they have issues pop up.

I used Lazer Blue Marker from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Liquid-Harvest-Concentrated-Pattern-Indicator/dp/B0049I9OBA

Southern Ag Surfactant: https://www.amazon.com/Southern-Ag-Surfactant-Herbicides-Non-Ionic/dp/B00553EREC

That's the plan that worked for me.

Here are the products I’m using:

2-4D with Triclopyr note : this was cheaper at my local fleet & farm supply store.

surfactant I did buy this off of amazon

Thank you so much for you help. I am sending out a check for the local extension office for their soil report.

All of this is new to me. I usually just go to Lowes and by something that says crabgrass for a pre-emergent. Are these OK?

as /u/skip_churches mentioned. would the Turflon Ester be a good way of killing it off this summer for an overseed of fescue this fall?

https://www.amazon.com/Monteray-LG5518-Monterey-Turflon-Ester/dp/B000UGO51Y

u/creepulkins · 1 pointr/lawncare

Turflon Ester. I had the same problem last year. I nuked the big patches of Bermuda with weed and grass killer last summer. I reseeded some areas in in the fall and used sod from Lowe’s to cover the others. For the other areas where Bermuda was coming in through the fescue I used Turflon Ester. It’s expensive but worth it.

Not necessarily endorsing the seller but 4e will annihilate them. I painted the concentrated version on the cut stringer and they turned brown in 10-15 days. Be careful if you spray it though, it will kill almost everything. It's way stronger then roundup and not available in places like Home Depot.

One more thing, if you ignore the awful text on these gloves, they actually protect your hands and arms if you have to pull them out.

Good luck, you are starting a war, not a battle.
