Or a large stylus so it's easier to grip.
I have a Wii U so I got the Gamepad Accessory Set that comes with a pen sized stylus, cleaning cloth and screen protector for the Wii U's Gamepad and I definitely favor that stylus compared to the N3DSXL (and N3DS) stylus, it's much easier to hold.
Amazon also has some people selling a similar type of stylus in a bundle pack that has a little grip area dreamGEAR Wii U Grip Stylus 4 Pack and it's the same technology stylus as the 3DS so it'll work on the 3DS and be a larger size which may be easier for the kid (or adults) to hold and use.
If someone wants a more professional look for a resistive stylus, there's a metallic pen style by Autopoint on Amazon. I want to try this one sometime as I hope the grip is comfy and I like the pen clip feature.
As a note: If there's a different style of stylus you want for your 3DS or Wii U, make sure it's the "Resistive Touch Screen Compatible" stylus. Smartphones use "Capacitive" touch screen technology (the squishy rubber or special cloth tip stylus) and those stylii don't work well for the 3DS/Wii U as they're too squishy, you need the accuracy on the tip. On the flipside, the Resistive tips won't work at all on Capacitive screens.

I've been using this one packed with a Wii U screen protector and cleaning cloth kit (after loosing my Theatrhythm one; aside, anyone got one to sell?). No ridged grips or the like, but helps cut back on that pinch hold from hours of rhythm gaming (Mirai DX, anyone?). Seems this'n's Nintendo-official, too. Otherwise, sometimes one of a few Star Wars-themed styluses, as they're much longer than pack-ins (replaced my system's loosened one with a telescopic one, though its point isn't as seamless as I'd like).
To prevent scratches to the screen (or to your screen protectors, since they are a royal pain in the ass to apply) find thin microfiber cloth and place it between your screens. That way even if the system is in a tight pocket, the screens can't touch. You NEED to get a thin cloth though; anything too thick will cause pressure on the hinges, which would be bad over time.
I had one left over from a Wii U Gamepad Screen Protector Kit that fit between my 3ds xl screens like it was designed for exactly that job!

Yep! But you can only unlock that mode if you load step data from the "WiiU Fit" infrared pedometer while standing with one foot on each of two balance boards. So watch for them to patch in that hardware support, it'll be a clue that it's coming.
Wii Fit U is compatible with a Fit Meter That tracks the distance you walk and distance you climb.
You sync the meter to the software and this is (based on the estimates of a relatively cheap peripheral) the distance I walked and the distance I climbed in 2014
