If you get a 360 controller for pc, get this: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller-Windows/dp/B002TIW7OI
It comes with the official (that says Microsoft, not XBOX 360) wireless receiver. I don't think they sell those separately anymore. Don't waste money on the off-brand, it's shit.

cheap =/= wireless
go with wired 360 controllers, I recommend Rock Candy as I can verify they work perfect with steam on 14.04 and 16.04 and are cheaper than official wired controllers.
they slot in perfectly to your budget as well, as long as you get the red and blue ones
Has anyone here used one of these for a signficant amount of time? Do the buttons / pad die after a while like their old EX2 pads? ( http://www.amazon.com/Hori-Pad-Turbo-Black-Xbox-360/dp/B002L3SXO4/ )
The EX2 rubber between the buttons and pcb would fall apart, it was a big problem. I went through 5 or so, 1 only lasted a month. And the wiring would stop functioning later too.
If they made improvements since then I'll probably get one.
What about game themed controllers? They're not cheap, but if you're struggling for ideas, these might be a fun gift. They're also the actual Microsoft controllers and not that 3rd party junk.
MW3 Contoller
Halo Reach Controller
Which is better? The (redundant "shiny") Xbox 360 with no games, a 250Gb hard drive, and a $75 Amazon credit for $299.99....or the Gears of War 3 console with a copy Gears of War 3 (worth $59.99 on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Gears-War-3-Xbox-360/dp/B002I0H79C/ref=pd_sim_vg_4), a second controller (worth $51.03 on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Gears-War-3-Controller-Xbox-360/dp/B0050SYTJK/ref=pd_sim_vg_5), and a 320Gb (not 250Gb) hard drive for $399? http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Gears-Limited-Console-Bundle/dp/B0050SYZCQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1314806569&sr=1-4
Well it's more expensive than I bought it for but this controller can't be beat- it's a rare late-cycle 360 controller that was improved tremendously from the original 360 pad.

You do need an Xbox 360 wireless adapter for your PC too so it could get pricey, but this controller works wonderfully for Cemu.
If money isn't a problem, I'm happy with this setup though it's a bit more expensive than is necessary:
The more expensive "play and charge" version doesn't require swapping batteries, you just plug it in to recharge (where it becomes a regular Wired controller so you can still use it), and that's worth the extra $20 to me. The squid-grips, when applied properly, make holding the controller more comfortable.
The RRoD for my xbox controllers would be awesome, so people stop trying to take mine and claim that it's theirs.
also, chuckle fucks
The chances of getting a fake unintentionally are quite low, if you directly from Amazon and check that it says under brand "Microsoft", but id also check the reviews.
There is a good guide on eBay on how to spot the more convincing fakes.
Here are some fakes if you are looking to intentionally buy one: 1 2 3
Amazon US manage to keep sellers from using misleading language in the title, and usually require the seller to put a brand name other than Microsoft at the beginning of the title, unfortunately on the UK site it is more common, as you can see here.
Many modified controllers use fake parts, because the fakes usually have test points that can be used, making it much easier. Often the seller will use a genuine case and a fake circuit board, meaning there is no way to be 100% certain without opening the controller.
Fakes should always feel lighter than a genuine controller, however I once purchased one, where the seller had ripped out the rumble motors and put a ziplock bag of sand in each handle.
I use this guy on my PC. What's weird is that my computer thinks that's a legit Xbox 360 controller, but I also have a blue one and the computer sees it as a third party gamepad. With MotionInJoy, you can use a PS3 controller as an Xbox 360 controller on the PC, if you have and like those.
I've had good luck with the PDP Afterglow Wired Controller. It is also in the middle of your price range. Not sure what the "SmartTrack" tech is, but I love my controller. The LEDs are quite bright, but can be turned to one of three modes: constant on, on vibrate only, or off.

Xbox version works great on PC. Don't know about the PS3 version.
The d-Pad is great, and the triggers don't have an annoying spring or anything. Perfect controller in my opinion.
Okay, I'm gonna step out of my Masterrace skin for a moment to rant.
How the fuck dare whoever made this stupid image say that the Saturn controller belongs in the low-tier? I play fighting games on a regular basis, and if I don't have my custom fightstick with me, then I go for my trusty Saturn controller to get the job done.
Best goddamn d-pad and face buttons ever made for any controller. Ever.
Knock that 360 pad down a notch for it's shitty, inaccurate, and unreliable d-pad that has yet to be fixed or improved upon in any way. And yes, I'm also referencing the redesign. It still sucks.
There's a reason why I bought this to play 2D fighters and brawlers on my PC when my fightstick isn't available. The 360 pad can go suck an Ouya's dick.
Also, respect the NES controller. We all grew up with that one. Much love.
I've used a Rock Candy controller for about 6 or 7 months now for most games, and the "A" button is starting to wear down, but besides that it's the best controller I've used for fighting games
well if you had the money to spend i would get a xbone controller and a micro USB cord. but you could get something like a rock candy controller,
http://www.amazon.com/Rock-Candy-Xbox-360-Controller-Green/dp/B008U2XECG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1409921379&sr=1-2&keywords=rock+candy+xbox+360+controller
for about 19 euros. same ergonomics as a 360 controller, just see-through.
They were both off-brands. The 360 controller is a Ghost Recon edition and the PS3 one was given to me. It's generic and kinda junk anyway.
The other one I thought would work was my Gamesir G3s android controller. Here's the link
Would this do?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DYQ7EOM/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_uR6Ttb1CPWSDP355
Most are saying Win 7 compatible. Would this be okay with Win 8.1?
http://www.amazon.com/Mad-Catz-Pro-Controller-Xbox-360/dp/B00ITLK9CG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1457259530&sr=8-3&keywords=mad+catz+controller
Just going to point this out.. Mad Catz controller AKA MLG controller for the Xbox 360.
This thing is the tops and I prefer it to both my Xbox One controller and Xbox 360 OEM controller. Also you can switch the layout so that the thumbsticks align like they do on the playstation controllers.
At $20.00 is a steal. You'll thank me later :) It's wired though, if that's a problem.
