I ride about 10 minutes to work on a 29" mountain bike without suspension. For Denton streets that's a good bike. wiggee's comments are pretty spot-on. In winter I also wear a balaclava/face mask/scarf and a helmet liner depending on how cold it is. I also have two pairs of winter gloves, one for cool and one for really cold. I've riddin in the mornings below 20F and no problems. Even in the summer it doesn't get too hot until after 9-10am. Get a good helmet with MIPS and wear it. Also for pant leg cuff clips I use blousers.

I am on the second floor, but it's a shared balcony and I'm not too sure if I could pull that off with my management.

I could maybe see a pair of U bolts and put it along the south facing railing. Only problem is running it into my apartment.

Edit: Well this looks promising to get the cable run through a window.

My friend Craig Rodgers just put a new book out and he's from Denton county! It's called The Ghost of Mile 43, he's got a bunch of other small pieces out in magazines and online as well, and this other one coming out next month.

haha It's called Da Bomb - The Final Answer, and it's around 1,500,000 Scoville units. I got it at Hot Licks in LA and had to sign a waiver. Usually I mix only about a drop or two into whatever sauce I'm feeling for my wings/whatever and it kicks things up to 10. One 2oz bottle costing $25 sounds like a lot, but it lasts a while because I only use a drop or two each time I'm in the mood for an ass kicking. lol Man, one drop in a batch of mac and cheese is heaven.

Anyways, I actually misrepresented myself earlier, I'm currently still in LA until sometime in May in which I'm moving back to Denton, but I'll probably be bringing my bottle with me haha

Bike commuter and UNT grad student here. I don't hear that it's a problem on campus during school hours. You don't say whether or not it will be outside during the night or not.

If you have the money for a nice bike, you have thhe money for a good lock. I use this lock and recommend it heartily. Comes with three keys and is a little harder than others to break since it's smaller and harder to get the tools that thieves use around it. It comes with a handy little mount to for the frame. Like others have said, if you lock just the wheel, you're gonna have a bad time.

If you're having problem on your own land/yard you can put these around to control the tick population. You can DIY them if you don't mind working with a human safe pesticide.

You can also spray your yard with beneficial nematodes to control for both ticks and fleas.

You'll still need protection directly for your dogs if you're going to parks or something of course.
