There is nothing I know of to protect your existing thumbsticks but you can easily replace them. By buying a triwing screwdriver and replacement thumbsticks from amazon or ebay.

It really depends, do you know what brand and have looked up info about using ps1 controllers with the adapter? I know there are some other adapters like this one that state that it does support ps1 and ps2 controllers, but from the looks of it, it seems that this is the adapter you linked and someone did ask the same question about using a ps1 controller, albeit he asked about the steering wheel, but I'm pretty sure it would work. You could always return the adapter and buy a different one that supports ps1 if it doesn't.
Hold on, what? Are you trying to plug a PlayStation cable into a GameCube? Of course that doesn't work. I'm actually amazed it even fits.
You need a Nintendo composite video cable like this one or an S-Video cable like this one. Go with the latter if your TV has an S-Video input.
They can, there is really no such thing as a "xeno clone" since it is an open sourced design. The issue, is that there are a LOT of variables. Even beyond the potentiometers, the media you use (blank dvds) and even the DVD burner you use can have an effect. There is really no single true way of getting it to work. For me, I had to get some very specific media, then it worked perfectly. It does seem that Ritek RiData discs have a better than average success rate... but it could be any number of things preventing it from working for you.

Edit. I'm actually unsure of what you're even asking... To run SSBM 20XX you need to use an action replay and sd card reader. (Potentially you will need a memory card as well to have your data save [though I'm not familiar with 20XX so maybe you can have the saves on the ROM])

I've gotten this set and it is still holding up.
Although I upgraded to a 48-piece driver set shortly after. One thing I found is that the screws are actually held with a small amount of glue. Start strong.
I own one of these and it works just fine if you play around with the settings I find that switching inputs solves issues of a driver failure when first powering it back on.
