If it’s a sliding glass door at the back they make inserts for the mesh part that acts as a doggie door. Here’s one. As well as a cheaper one you can cut into the mesh directly, here. Hope these help :)

If you don't know how he knew you had a plumed comming you need to find out how he knew it's pretty dam important. Sweep for bugs all over your house not just the phones. Check all computers for key loggers and then check your phones. He found out some how.

They're a pretty cool invention that will at the very least alert you to an intruder, and most are able to stop the door from opening any further so it stops anyone getting in. It won't be as ideal seen as you have roommates but I guess you could agree that whoever is in last puts it at the door before going to bed? It's a step up from a lock, but not as costly or deadly as a gun?

Here's the problem with a bat, they take a certain amount of force to swing. They're really not good weapons for women. I'm on the extreme here but I could take a bat away from someone if I really needed/wanted to especially if they're swinging wildly.

Now I have a ka-bar 1245 that I practice with and I have a frontier tomahawk that has a hammer head on the back and I also have a normal one without the hammer. I'm good at throwing & fighting with tomahawks. If I have a tomahawk with me a baseball bat isn't doing a thing to me.
