Hey!

That's awesome you want to learn to create manga! As far as learning how to draw manga with video. Mark Crilley's YouTube channel is incredible. But also if you would like to learn how to draw manga I think it's important to study fundamentals of drawing (Mangaka are trained artists who learn their craft not from drawing manga but drawing from life and creating their own style afterwords) so I would suggest also going through a drawing book or two.

Also here are a few other resources that I think will be incredible for you if you want to not only learn how to draw manga but maybe turn that passion into an actual career!

Some things I feel like mentioning:

The Sword Art Online volume that comes out this month is the manga. The first light novel volume comes out next month. I think I won't get the manga but I will definitely buy the light novel volumes.

The first 3 volumes of Phoenix by Osamu Tezuka are currently available digitally and the 4th volume comes out next week (March 11). You can get it directly from Vizmanga, Amazon Kindle, iBookstore, Nook, and Google Play.

You can buy a Shonen Jump subscription on Rightstuf ($26) and get a free year of their Got Anime Membership.

I noticed most volumes of Attack on Titan are currently around $6-$7 on amazon so it is worth checking it out if you are interested in buying the series. Worth noting that if you don't mind waiting the Attack on Titan Colossal Edition 1 comes out in May and contains the first 5 volumes of the series.

Deadman Wonderland volume 1 which came out last month is still $6 on amazon.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer Vol. 1-2 is currently available for preorder comes out in November. I also noticed Noragami, Kokoro Connect, and Ubel Blat are available for preorder (on amazon at least).

---

This week I had around 8 volumes preordered but I had to cancel most of them. I plan to buy them in the future during a sale. (Really wanted Nijigahara Holograph....waited so long for it...it was even delayed...but I have been spending too much on manga recently so :/ )

Haganai volume 6 just arrived and it seems next volume the manga finally reaches the 2nd season of the anime. Nisekoi volume 2 should get here tomorrow (currently around $6.30 on amazon). Psyren volume 15 has not shipped yet...no idea why (currently $5 on amazon).

Those are my orders for this week. I really can't wait for the Gundam volume at the end of this month.

---

From last month's releases I only remember getting Toradora 6, Dragon Ball Full Color Edition 1, Strike Witches 1, Deadman Wonderland and I think that was it....I did kinda go crazy and spend a bit on some stuff released long ago like Great Teacher Onizuka and Gintama. If anyone is interested on the size of the Dragon Ball color edition volume I can take some pictures next to a regular One Piece volume.

Long post xD

Yakitate Japan! is very similar in style to Shokugeki (great art, country bumpkin protagonist taking on the elite, crazy reaction shots) and so is Addicted to Curry. Cooking Master Boy takes place in medieval China so somewhat similar in setting to Nobunga No Chef.

For more realistic takes on cooking:

Oishinbo is one of the longest and most influential food manga and some of it is even available in legit http://www.amazon.com/OISHINBO-JAPANESE-CUISINE-A-Carte/dp/1421521393#

Technically it is about a restaurant critic, but the focus is on the food and technique and is super informative.

And I haven't seen it in English, but Shota no Sushi (King of Sushi) was made intro a TV drama.

Also, I would highly recommend the webtoon (korean online manga) Michelin Star http://tapastic.com/series/MichelinStar

And I agree that Bambino is excellent as well! and it's a more realistic story in the world of Italian cooking.

For crazy fantasy cooking stories, there's Toriko that is a bit too out there for me. (it looks like fist of the northstar and has crazy out there fantasy worlds and foods like one piece). There's also Space Chef Caisar by super artist Boichi that is somewhat ecchi and is very out there as well.

There's so much to praise about this manga and this author in general. I love his attention to detail. A lot of mangas and movies depict homes as neat minimalist set pieces whereas in real life, there is stuff lying around everywhere in our rooms that reveal our characters. We never get a flashback or conversation with Mikura's grandfather but we understand the depth of their relationship through all of the stuff that's left behind after he dies. His art is just amazing at conveying emotions and atmosphere without words.

I really hope he continues this series and I plan on pre-ordering this book for when its released in english: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1506700799

I'm pretty surprised that Dark Horse chose to publish this instead of Memories of Emanon which is more popular, hopefully that means the author is planning on resuming this series.

I absolutely adore Tsurata Kenji's art, I've bought up everything I could find of it. When I first heard about this getting licensed I was incredulous, as I never expected his work to get an English treatment. But now it's out and hopefully it can get some of his work some much needed English attention. I'll cross my fingers and hope Emanon get's the same. You guys go out and buy a copy, now!!!

I would like to begin with stating that anime/manga are not artistic styles, they are mediums. Manga can run the gamut of looking like bleach to crying freeman and depend on the influences of the aforementioned artist.

I'm going to recommend this basic figure drawing book as it will teach your cousin some very basic, but great things.

There are tons these days. It's a real popular format. Some stuff I'd recommend:

Just Good Stuff:

u/esterve · 1 pointr/manga

<Me and the Devil Blues> has a black protagonist, not sure if it's been licensed though. Afro Samurai is a pretty good anime if she's willing to try that out (I don't think anyone's translated the manga). I'd have to get back to you on the college manga, cos all I can think of are high school ones. I think FMA is a really safe bet though, definitely give her that.

I think the popular buys nowadays are Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan though, if you want to try those. Oh, and if she's going to Ireland, The Ancient Magus' Bride takes a lot of mythology from around that area (like Gaelic and Anglo-Saxon).

Great collection! You should consider picking up Monster Perfect Edition, it's a reprint of Monster, two volumes per edition of this one.

u/Moz-za · 3 pointsr/manga

Watched the anime years ago and i plan to buy the manga.

Did you not know, Monster is being re-released? As Monster The Perfect Edition? 2 Volume Omnibus'. With bigger pages. Better quality paper and colour pages.

The first one comes out in a few days. Here it is on Amazon UK if your from the US have a look on your amazon.

u/TotoroTheGreat · 7 pointsr/manga

Since you're not aware, it should be mentioned that most manga tend to be long series and span multiple books, so it's rarely just one book.

I would recommend something like Cardcaptor Sakura. This particular edition of the series has 4 books in total. You can search them using the search term "Cardcaptor Sakura Omnibus".

Since you've mentioned she likes Hayao Miyazaki's works, check out this manga box set by him. It's called Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

u/Ryzza36 · 1 pointr/manga

It's always expensive here in Australia unfortunately, matey potatey. $14 is actually on the cheaper end of the scale to be honest.

I know of a site that you can use to compare prices for books, and I looked up Tokyo Ghoul for you, and the $14-16 range is looking like your best bet for new.

If you're willing to try Amazon, it's here for $3 apparently, but that's not including shipping.

You might be able to find a eBook, they could be cheaper.

And if you don't care about physically collecting it, and...y'know, technically committing a 'crime', you could always just read the scanlations on MangaDex. Don't worry, you won't be arrested. We all do it here.

u/rusticks · 3 pointsr/manga

Black Edition volumes feature larger, better quality pages compared to the normal volumes. There are many pages you can compare to the normal volumes that the coloring looks better.

The All-in-One Edition is the entire series in a single book. As you can expect, the book is massive.

u/Indekkusu · 5 pointsr/manga

The original work, in this case the Light Novel was adapted to manga.

Volume 1 for the Light Novel

Volume 1 for the Manga

u/KingOfOddities · 1 pointr/manga

you also have this, which is a better bargain
but if you're just buy to collect, then both the box set or the black edition seem fine to me.

u/lukeiamnotyourfather · 1 pointr/manga

What you'd probably want specifically is to look for a translation of the vinland sagas, which have to do with the first viking settlement of the west, in Newfoundland. This is probably a good place to start.

u/calico197 · 2 pointsr/manga

Viz is releasing it in English. You can probably find it in the manga section of your local bookstore or you can find it on online retailers like amazon here.

u/SkyBlaze93 · 2 pointsr/manga

http://www.amazon.ca/Psyren-Vol-1-Toshiaki-Iwashiro/dp/1421536765

or your equivalent.
A lot of books stores use to sell the books, you could find them in your local book store.
But Online Stores should have some stock, there is a Holiday sales going atm check those out.

u/pitman · 1 pointr/manga

It's already up for preorder FYI.

The Promised Neverland, Vol. 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1421597128/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_CYFPzbZGE9TSG

u/noex1337 · 4 pointsr/manga

The volumes were released in english in order, I think they're up to part 3 now. They look like this . You can also pick them up from most comic book stores. I got part 1 and 2 that way.

u/wiseteria · 2 pointsr/manga

So according to mangaupdates it's not completely translated.

Most likely because VIZ Media licensed it.

You can get the whole thing really cheap online (~$10):

Amazon

BookDepository

RightStuf Currently they have at least 33% off all Viz titles so now's a great time.

IMO you might as well pick it up if you like Dragon Ball. It's really not that expensive and probably no one will pick it back up to translate it. Maybe after the group translating Dr. Slump is done with it, they might do it, but it's not very likely.

u/TatteredTongues · 1 pointr/manga

According to Amazon, its release is in a couple of days, so it wouldn't be strange for some people to have received it already. Link.

u/c00kinfire · 1 pointr/manga

Amazon and BookDepository seem to have it if that's what you're asking.

u/MobileTortoise · 6 pointsr/manga

The oversized edition that is 3 volumes in 1. Here

u/Blockyblocks · 2 pointsr/manga

Oishinbo More of a food manga than a cooking manga but still explains lots of techniques and such.

u/sausagesizzle · 1 pointr/manga

BAM!

The story is mainly in from The Saga of the Greenlanders but The Saga of Eric the Red is also relevant. Both are translated in the book I've linked.

u/Duskav3ng3r117 · 1 pointr/manga

Amazon sells them but if you want to get it in person I get mine from Chapters/Indigo but I'm not sure if you live near one.

u/Irwiis · 1 pointr/manga

This was the amazon page linked from the other thread, so people can get it. I have no clue about who is picking what up.

u/atlantislifeguard · 7 pointsr/manga

Holy shit, I remember this one. It was really vivid because of the one scene where this guy paid like 100 bucks for that girl's pee.

Anyway it's Probably this
