I'm really late replying but I hope still useful! I looked at the series you mentioned your giftee liking and used my knowledge of anime to go on Amazon and pick out 10 other series or movies they might also like, along with why I think these might be a good option. Your person seems to really like edgy and highly dramatic pieces with a scifi or fantasy flair. That's been my favorite for 15 years! A lot of these are a bit older; I am taking the gamble that with as many newer pieces listed, your person hasn't watched a lot of backlog, and therefore may have missed some really good shit.

Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk classic. Older, yes, but for anyone who likes drama and scifi, this is a good choice. It focuses on a classic mind experiment: if you can move your brain freely among cybernetic parts and bodies, what is really "you"?

Steins;Gate is what instantly springs to mind for someone who also likes Psycho Pass. And I mean instantly. Fans of one almost invariably love the other. A tightly-plotted time travel thriller.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a bit older, often controversial, and an absolute work of art. There's a strong chance your giftee is a girl based on the other series they like, but even if not, Utena is still a solid choice. Just be careful on this; sending it to a conservative person could backfire badly. I rather doubt that is the case with Attack on Titan and Shiki, but just to be safe. It's strange and beautiful...and stylish beyond all doubt.

Black Lagoon is anime's answer to a Hollywood big budget action movie. Comedic, violent, and unforgettable, it deserves a far wider audience than it's had. Almost every anime fan I know who's seen it has loved it.

Akira is without a doubt one of the most famous anime movies to ever be created. Animated without CG in the 1980s, the quality of its hand-drawn special effects has yet to be equalled by almost any other production to this day. For someone used to today's slick computer assisted animation, it's still mindblowing. Akira is often credited with being just as important as Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon in starting the anime boom of the 1990s, and this is a very nice edition.

Also in the classic scifi category we have Serial Experiments Lain, a show whose points on technology and the internet and the singularity still ring true today. Moody and thought-provoking with masterful use of color and a fantastic soundtrack.

Literally no adult-targeted anime is as famous and well-beloved as Cowboy Bebop. This space western with the jazz soundtrack is a perennial favorite on Cartoon Network Adult Swim, is often suspected as a major influence behind Firefly, and is one of the most popular anime in the US of all time... And it's hitting bluray this month.

Summer Wars should probably come with a bluray device as a tech test. It's that beautiful. A tale of virtual reality and the family and friends behind the characters, Summer Wars is an unforgettable movie which, despite being intensely Japanese, deserves a slot on any videophile's shelf.

My total wildcard pick is Mushishi. Beautiful and dream-like, like a series of 25 minute oases from ordinary life. If this is in fact a slice of life, these timeless Japanese almost fairy tales are like no life you've seen. Some call it slow and overhyped. I call it perfection. At any rate, this isn't at all what I'd get as an only gift; it's more a wildcard filler for a $20 other series. If you want my actual top pick.....

Baccano! is my final and top pick. It's really hard to go wrong with this. This rollicking action anime about immortal Prohibition-era Mafiosi in the United States is one of the best and most underrated anime of all time. Humor, violent action, mystery, drama, good characters, good animation, good music... It has them all. It's chronically overshadowed by its more popular sister series Durarara, and that makes me sad. But Durarara isn't easily available outside streaming, and this glorious madcap piece of anime is. Plus it has at least one theme in common with everything your person listed liking. You know what to do.

For 1; There should be links somewhere. Perhaps another method that may work is to compare popularity of soundtracks with their respective DVD/Blu-ray equivalent. It might be worth looking into. Evangelion ost on amazon and subsequent DVD/bluray sales It's EVA, it's super popular, so something went right?

For 2; Sorry man. Interpretation is hard in the art world. Analysis of classical music might give you some footing to stand on as it has been critiqued to no end with various input from people in the musical field. You may be able to draw something from one of their conclusions.

For 3; Bollywood comes to mind immediately. They live and die by their soundtracks. Lord of the Rings trilogy from Peter Jackson is a good comparison tool. I'm sure you can find something in that vein. Google search pulled up an 84 page dissertation into it. Here I have not read it but might after this.

For 4; Your teacher is right. However, so are you. This statement is more about "what could be used as a control?" rather than a "find a control." (especially this late in the game) The basis of all music used in film and television is that is has impact relative to what is happening on screen. Proving that is difficult but it is assumed in most cases. This is the best example I have ever come across that illustrates my point. It's the first look we have of Jurassic Park. It is THE REVEAL...and we are treated to poorly played melodica music that clearly does not match. If that doesn't suffice to prove a point, I'm not quite sure what else will.

I think it's best to wait for reviews of the upcoming 4K UHD release that's being released in Japan on April. English subtitles and dub are also included.

All of the currently available releases are compromised in some way, so in order to get the best experience, you have to combine the video from the Italian 30th Anniversary Blu-ray with:

You're welcome. ALSO, if you like it please buy the DVD's. The entire show will only be $20 starting June 4 (http://www.amazon.com/Birdy-Mighty-Decode-Complete-S-A-V-E/dp/B00BLQRFSM)

It's criminally overlooked, so it'd be nice to show it some support =)

If anyone's interested, the cheapest way I know to legally get these films is through amazon.jp, where they're approx. $280 for the standard edition Blu-ray box set (with english subs).
http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/aw/d/B00C3DUY5S
Still steep as fuck, but the box is all shiny, glossy, and fits beautifully on a shelf. Also, the movies are good, even the 6th one, and the 7th one could've been called "count the snowflakes" as it's the only full HD film in the set, and the snow falling pattern throughout the film is fucking detailed and hypnotic. Ufotable X Type-Moon is a wonderful combination, can't wait for the upcoming FSN adaptations.

Aspect ratio isn't the same as SD/HD; you can find HD transfers of 4:3 anime from the cel era and sometimes they look pretty great, too.

I know the UK bluray release of Code Geass R2 has it in HD and 16:9, so importing that might be an option if you can rustle up the means to play it.

Any reasoning to this selection, because honestly I think we could recommend something better than these, if there isn't a specific reason to this selection.

It sucks you can't stream, but I'm seeing a lot of comments in this thread about how piracy is totally ok, when it actually is possible for someone looking to watch this particular show to acquire it legally, and it's cheaper to own than in the US.

EDIT: Telling people that they don't have to pirate to watch Bakemonogatari is met with downvotes? Cool.

u/Crossadder · 1 pointr/anime

Not that I know of.
MVM(UK Licencor) is still around and I can't check who animated it now(AniDB is updating it's server), but I'm fairly sure the Studio is still around.

And at times UK releases are much(or at lest a bit) cheaper, like Fate/Zero is £25.95 for pt 1.

Or just pay the $13 (that's like 2 subway sandwiches) for a crisp hardcover so that we have a better chance of seeing a third season in the future.

u/peedit · 2 pointsr/anime

There is actually! You can purchase the light novels, manga, or anime BDs.

All of these support the series. :)

u/megatronical · 1 pointr/anime

Yeah that's the 10th anniversary set I believe and the original one was bluray but it has some DVDs and cd's for some of the other special features (it had everything in it, drama cd's, parallel works, osts, etc)

If you get them here it roughly $240ish and comes with the very basics (none of that extra fluff like pictures and booklets etc.). Only thing I need to find out is if that version has english subtitles. One person says it does but I wish it would be a little more obvious.

u/cmmdrtoast111 · 3 pointsr/anime

The UK edition of the complete Blu-ray collection is coming out later this year for $97.81. If you have a region free Blu-ray player then this might be worth importing.

u/JoeHazzers · 24 pointsr/anime

This is what pisses me off about licensing and distribution in an internet-connected age of consumers.

When there's no timely access to content in a legal (and even paid) way, there's little to no incentive for people to wait days, weeks or months (in some cases years or not at all) for the content they want.

It's a complete farce and there's really no wondering why people turn to "less" legal options to get their hands on the content they want. We've seen it happen with Films when people either watch cam copies instead of going to the cinema (an entire discussion in itself), but perhaps more relevant to this discussion is a phenomenon which happens in the UK.

We like US TV series a lot so we want to be able to watch that latest episode of GoT or see the season finale of Dexter or the next instalment of The Strain as soon as possible. It's already in English (being from the USA), but we sometimes have to wait months for the season to be aired in the UK. We're starting to see TV channels over here syndicate content from the US within a matter of weeks, but it's still a while behind.

WIth the world connected via the world wide web with social networks, twitter, blogs, and even reddit, discussions are now global. You can happily talk to anyone anywhere in the world at any time. I don't want to be weeks or months behind on my latest TV trivia so I want to be on the same page as my long lost American brothers.

I can either wait for the show to be aired in the UK to record it or watch it live, or I can obtain the episode via less-than-legal means less than an hour after airing in the USA, for zero cost and minimal effort. Apart from the legal ramifications, why would anyone not do this if they wanted the content now?

Considering of course that Anime is not natively English and there is a significant lag with regards to an officially licensed (and therefore "legal") translation of the show, what are the real, viable options for getting my hands on the content in the UK?

Streaming Services

As the post shows, you're lucky if the content is available. Which provider has the content? Do I need to subscribe to multiple services because of licensing deals? How much of the content I want is available? Is it simulcast? Is it even available in a reasonable amount of time? Is my favourite show one of the chosen few?

Localised Physical HD Releases

I'm a bit of a hoarder so I enjoy having physical copies of whatever I own. Only recently has a lot of content come out on BluRay over here. I got my hands on nice copies of Code Geass, Steins;Gate, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note (albeit DVD), FMA:Brotherhood and Gurren Lagann and a couple of others.

These are all fairly reasonable examples with the prices being appropriate, but the release dates are completely unreasonable for any enthusiast. The first BluRay players were launched in mid 2006 so of course it wasn't possible to publish a series from before that time on BluRay, but some of these really do take the piss:

Title | Airing Finished | English Dub | BluRay Release UK | Lag From Airing | Lag From Dub | Lag From BluRay Standardisation
---|---|---|---|---|---|---
Attack On Titan | Sep 2013 | ??? | Oct 2014 | 1y1m | ???
Black Lagoon (Second Barrage) | Dec 2006 | Aug 2008 | Jul 2012 | 5y7m | 3y11m
Code Geass (R2) | Sep 2008 | ??? | Jan 2013 | 4y4m | ???
Cowboy Bebop | Apr 1999 | Sep 2001 | Jul 2013 | 14y3m | 11y10m | 7y
Evangelion 1.11 | Sep 2007 | ??? | Apr 2010 | 2y7m | ???
Evangelion 2.22 | Jun 2009 | ??? | Jun 2011 | 2y | ???
Evangelion 3.33 | Nov 2012 | ??? | Feb 2015 | 2y3m | ???
FLCL | Mar 2001 | ??? | Oct 2013 | 12y7m | ??? | 7y3m
FMA: Brotherhood | Jul 2010 | ??? | Aug 2012 | 2y1m | ???
Gurren Lagann | Sep 2007 | Nov 2008 | Oct 2014 | 7y1m | 5y11m
Hellsing Ultimate (I-VIII) | Jul 2011 | Nov 2012 | May 2013 | 1y10m | 6m
Hellsing Ultimate (IX-X) | Dec 2012 | Oct 2014 | ??? | ??? | ???
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time | Jul 2006 | Nov 2006 | Dec 2011 | 5y5m | 5y1m

In a lot of these cases the lag from airing is down to as low as two years from the completion of airing in Japan, and the first two volumes of Hellsing Ultimate (I-VIII) even made it down to a six month lag from airing. However, look at some of the older series. It can be as bad as 14 years (Cowboy Bebop) or 12 years (FLCL) for an HD English release of an existing series which has been localised even years before.

Of course, I'm only looking at English releases as it wouldn't be a very clever move to locally release non-localised media. Most of these are dubs, as I'm not sure about the commonplace release of solely subbed Anime over here.

Even then, the difference in time from the airing to UK release is inconsistent at best but for the most part I feel is it getting much better.

The BluRay DRM sucks futa genitalia, but that's a different topic.

Importing

Importing from the USA is a more timely option than waiting for a local UK release in most situations, and it's as simple as that. Again, still significant lag from the original airing, but it's still there.

As far as importing from Japan, this is by far the most timely physical option for getting my hands on the content. I can import the BluRay from Japan, pay hilarious shipping fees, get stung by HMRC (customs) on the way in, then be lucky enough to have a Japanese-language copy of your favourite anime.

But hey, what about subs? Do you overlay your self-obtained subs (and how did you even get your hands on the subs legally in the first place)?

Problems with AACS (BluRay Encryption)

If you're lucky enough to have a BluRay drive, you'd better hope that you're on Windows or OS X in order to play your discs; the encryption on the discs and in the drive and in the player software which houses the appropriate certificates (which isn't free). You're S.O.L for viable players on linux without various encryption workarounds. There's decryption software out there for decrypted backup purposes, but it's not usually free and often wants some form of regular renewal.

I use Linux so I guess that's another £50 down the drain on software just to watch the discs I've already purchased.

Even then, what's the legality of bypassing this type of encryption in the UK? The law bounces around so much I can't keep track.

TL;DR I can't find any viable timely legal or "legally questionable" options for accessing anime in the UK. If you have that magical one-fits-all solution, bloody tell me.

People usually go with the least-shit option when price isn't really a question, and the legal options are the shittest options.

u/ElkBit · 6 pointsr/anime

Well, they did remaster the entire series and put it on Blu-Ray. In regards to an actual remake, I don't think it would fare as well especially since many of the ideas in the show were prophecies for what our world has become (internet, cell phones, etc).

> Why can't they just release an affordable Blu Ray set?

UK be like.

Buying a region free player and UK sets is most likely cheaper. There's also an ultimate edition (though it was limited and came out a few years ago, idk how available it is now) and a separate movie box.

The Lain set is the UK bluray/dvd combo pack which can be purchased here

Not sure where you're based but the equivelent set can also be found on US amazon here

You can't watch Code Geass S2 legally online in the UK, its pretty crazy. Netflix has rights to the show, and they've released season 1 and that's it. Its either buy the 21 quid bluray or sail the seven seas.

I got that one 10 years ago when it was around $50. Do NOT buy the malaysian bootlegs that you can get on eBay and other sites.

u/Hades_Re · 2 pointsr/anime

I thought so, too, but after checking as a test Bakemonogatari I saw that there aren't any information about the sound / language except subtitle. Of course, as a r/anime elitist, I know that there isn't a dub in English.

u/lenish · 2 pointsr/anime

I grabbed this when it was released (may have preordered it, not sure now): http://www.amazon.com/Serial-Experiments-Lain-Complete-Blu-ray/dp/B008YRL5V4/

I love the series, and that box set comes with a Lain sticker. The lack of Lain memorabilia malkes me sad.

u/trunicator · 2 pointsr/anime

I have this limited edition of Lain, and then I also have my figure collection! I would take a picture, but I don't have a lighting setup and it shows a reflection of me in the glass whenever I try to take a picture, blehh. I may take them out for a group shot eventually.

u/MetaSoshi9 · 3 pointsr/anime

In america yes It's because it's out of print though, when something so popular has been out of print for a while the price skyrockets, more demand + less supply = more money.

u/clove7 · 1 pointr/anime

No, unfortunately.

You could do what I did and look into buying a UK Blu-ray player and the UK Blu-rays

Even with shipping, that should be like half the price of the limited US release. Having a UK player will also give you cheaper options for things like F/SN:UBW, Baccano, Madoka, Gurren Lagann, Monogatari, etc.

u/ajtpak · 10 pointsr/anime

Unless you're referring to the original ONE manga, then im not sure, but for the other one: Nope, although thankfully they're easy to purchase since they're on amazon. The scans you see on mangahere and stuff are illegal.

u/squidwalk · 4 pointsr/anime

I don't understand at all. Amazon has season 1 for $35, season 2 for $45, the two webisode series for $20 each for two volumes, and the movie for $30. That's a total of about $150, which I don't think is that bad for what's essentially three seasons and a movie.

What aren't I getting? Is this about a foreign market, where they can't buy this from the US Amazon store? Is there an anti-Amazon movement that I don't know about?

Anime is cheaper than it's ever been. I won't presume to tell people they should or shouldn't be buying DVDs or Blu-rays, but $35 for 13 episodes is a fraction of how much anime on VHS used to cost.

u/baal_zebub · 1 pointr/anime

It is out of print but that is by no means "so much." If that's too much, Rightstuf still has it for 30$, here. "So much" is selling Oreimo's limited edition set for upwards 500$, or The End of Evangelion for ~100$. If you like, even on amazon that set is being sold new for 55$. Of course, rightstuf is usually cheaper, and the provided link reflects that.

Many copies of that Neon Genesis set were produced so even though they are very recently out of print - news broke of the specific set going out of print on November 29th of last year - they aren't worth any more than they used to be worth. Also, Section23 has the license for Neon Genesis, currently.

u/thesockdoctor · 2 pointsr/anime

If you're talking about the box sets, I believe "Part 1" is episodes 1-13, thus "Part 2" being the latter half of the season.

The standard edition should suffice if you just want to watch the series.

Here are the box sets standard edition:

(PART 1) http://www.amazon.com/Attack-Titan-Part-Blu-ray-Combo/dp/B00FXB8RRO/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1406341485&sr=1-1&keywords=attack+on+titan

(PART 2) http://www.amazon.com/Attack-Titan-Standard-Edition-Blu-ray/dp/B00KU3Y2VK/ref=pd_cp_mov_0

Not sure if this is English dubbed or Japanese with English subtitles, but according to Amazon the languages are English/Japanese so I would think you could select which language. Don't take my word on that though.

The limited edition (fairly more expensive) comes with:

  • 3-D Lenticular Art Card

  • Notes From Beyond the Wall: Part 1, a 24 page digibook packed full of art, character information, and 4-panel comics

  • 104 minutes of on-disc extras including: The Making of Attack on Titan, Chibi Theater: Fly, Cadets, Fly! Days 1-13, Episode 3 & 13 Commentaries, Eyecatch Gallery, Textless Songs, Trailers
