just disclaimer some of these toys should only be played with under your supervision so use your best judgement. Check any rubber or stuffed/fabric toys daily for wear and if you see it starting to come apart throw it away as any loose pieces can be swallowed and cause a blockage. My ferrets aren’t chewers they just like to have toys to stash so I’m not as worried but everyone’s ferrets are different so be careful. Also you could make a dig box with rice (never instant) or dried pasta which is a lot of fun for them. They love tunnels, they love to dig, and they love to steal and stash small objects so the toys meet that criteria they’ll be happy lol

Man! No ones on this thread. Would love to hear other people's opinions and thoughts as well. I'll throw out mine in the mean time.

I haven't really gotten around to researching daily supplements yet (i think because I'm a believer of nutrients coming straight from the food source), I've done a little research about Taurine but that's about it so far. If you mean emergency situation sickness stuff, I've been slowly building a first aid kit for our ferrets. Inside I have ProBiotics, FerretRx, and Ferret Lax. I've used all of these with great success. The Probiotic helps with some tummy upsets when switching food and minor illness. The Ferret Rx was a great help when a cold spread through out the home and even to the ferrets and the ferret lax is something I feel should be a requirement to ferret house holds. Defiantly helped durring shedding season.

Also, Liam and Jasper are looking adorable in that pic. ❤

I adopted my baby from the Houston SPCA. I checked their website every day till they had one pop up. They told me that ferrets usually last less than a week in a shelter. From what I can tell, she is intelligent, too smart for her own good and her name suits her very well in my opinion.

One of my friends got a ferret from a pet store, and he is... well an idiot... I'm not sure if it's from the over amount of breeding or just his personality in general. I went to that pet store asking when they would get ferrets again and they told me they get ferrets every couple of weeks.

Also I researched ferrets for about 3ish months and I'm still learning things about them as we speak. My boyfriend recently bought me the Animal Planet - Pet Care Library(Ferrets) and it has been super helpful and I'm greatly enjoying it.

Amazon! Bueller managed to moonwalk his way out of his at first before I tightened it and he gave up, haha! |D After a quick tightening to make sure he couldn't wiggle his elbows under it he was good to go. Now as a forewarning I have some CHONKY boys xD But these harnesses are on their (almost) biggest/loosest fit and they work so you should be able to get them pretty snug around smaller fluffs~

I would recommend a hanging bottle. Many fuzzbutts are already trained on them before you get them from the pet store/breeder, but if not they learn pretty quick. Here is the bottle I bought:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002Z15ZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's nice and big, glass (which makes it durable), but it is a tad pricey. Well worth the money, though. If you're on a tighter budget, you can get a cheap one for just $10 or so, but I would highly recommend paying a bit more for quality.

Obviously a hanging bottle will completely eliminate the water digging, but my problem is that my little guy likes to dig food! Does anyone have any advice on stopping that behavior? I may have to make a thread about it to get some advice. I tried scruffing him, but he likes the attention!

>The shelter and all the pet stores in town only have the small triangular litter boxes which no one likes. How come stores are not stocking the larger square litter boxes anymore??

FTFY: Which no one likes I don't like.

"Small" is pretty vague, so I'm not sure which litter box you are referring to as they come in various sizes. In fact I think there is an even larger triangle style box above the size I normally buy in the stores.

I have these Triangle Litter Boxes, which I wouldn't say are small. It is 10" x 10" x 14" which in my opinion is just fine and doesn't take up too much real estate in their cage. They are also great for your corners as my girls seem to use the ones I have around the room more than the one in their cage. I even used one in this Hard-Sided Travel Carrier after I put Velcro tape on the bottom of it to attach it to the carrier. I was able to put their favorite bed and the litter box in there. I also hung a hammock from the top and hung their food and water bowls off the door. It was only a 5 hour drive, but just another reason I love these litter boxes.

I don't know about feeding vaseline to your ferret, never heard of that before. This is what the majority of people use. If your fuzzbutt is hacking or coughing, this will clear it up.

You ferret does need to be helped in the cleanliness department every couple months. Clean the hammocks/blankets, wipe down the cage, and bathe him if he gets stinky/oily to the point that its noticeable. Dry him off as best you can and lay down 2-3 towels he will dry himself.

The above mentioned ferretlax(or bribe as I call it) is useful for distracting him while you clip his nails(you'll see a black vein in the nail, clip a few millimeters above this or it will hurt/bleed).

Good Luck!

Kaytee Comfort Harness & Stretchy Leash, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002ASBSG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Bli0Bb3XK1GB7

I have something more or less like this but you need to a size under, they then to be large.
I learned mine will wiggle and shimmy his way out of those pretty well but he takes to the full body harness well

Tubing

From left to right the contents of each box are

Cornstarch Peanuts - Ping pong balls (open) - Cornstarch Pellets (Open)

and the two bottom boxes are both pinto beans.

They love it, and if you have the space for something like this I easily recommend it. My ferrets will spend such a long time chasing each other throughout it.

I think I'm going to upgrade all the tubing later to the clear kind, but it was expensive for now and I was just testing the idea. Ferrets love it.

We recently switched from that CareFresh style paper stuff to this walnut litter. I love it. It's not supposed to have a scent, but it smells sort of nutty to me. Makes sense, it's made of walnut after all. I noticed an improvement in odor over the paper litter, but it's not a huge difference. Scooping is incredibly easy.

I have 4 ferrets with a ferret nation cage connected to an enclosed cabinet that's been modified as an enclosed 'bedroom' with 2 floors connected by another ramp. I connected the bedroom to the cage with some drain conduit I picked up at home depot for relatively cheap. Just be aware it's not clear. Which can lead to some difficult to find fuzz butts when they decide to nap in the tubes. Also, I have 2 fuzzies who think that it makes the greatest thing to try and dig into at 5 am. so there's that too.

As far as litter... they won't use it. They just dig it out and shred the news paper, and poop on any exposed plastic they can find. So at this point I just keep an eye on them and scoop the poop when it appears. This works for me cause I work from home, so I can clean the cage a couple times a day.

For rec time, they are out for about an hour in the morning if they decide to wake up, then they have about 8 hours when I'm working and my roommate is home in the evenings. Since they don't make much noise, I happily play with them in range of the keyboard, and my roommate covers the other areas of the house. Most nights they return to the cage on their own, though not always.

Puppy Kong. They're the perfect size for ferrets. My girls steal it and hide it because it's their favorite thing in the world. Also, be sure to yelp when they bite you. That's how ferrets convey to each other that the play is too rough.

Carnivore Care is an excellent source for ferrets recovering from an illness. It has helped many of my ferrets.

We use this brand with mostly success. We have a couple of babies who are nearing a year and still on the trim side, but as long as we tighten them to the fullest extent, they don't seem to wiggle out of them.

Forgive me if the link doesn't work properly. The name of the item is: Ware ManufaCounturing SWM14008 Harness-N-Leash, Small

Picked up a couple of these on Amazon. Can be cut down for shorter lengths or left full length. The weazels love them.

Mine love kong puppy toys. They're rubbery enough to chew on, but they haven't been able to tear a piece off in the 4 months since I bought it. I have the extra small one.

You can look in to portable a/c units (like this.) I had to get one for my ferret room. Texas heat is horrible. Anyways they are pricey but you can them used for around $100ish. You just need a window to vent the heat from.

Short term solution maybe try a diy a/c?

u/LadyLuckNJ · 1 pointr/ferrets

Yeah. Whenever my ferrets get sick (I only have one who is a runt who gets sick).. I will feed them Oxbow Carnivore Care.

http://www.amazon.com/Oxbow-Carnivore-Care-Supplement-2-5-Ounce/dp/B006H38VZ0/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1421335897&sr=8-2-fkmr1&keywords=oxbow+critter+care

It has a milkshake-like consistancy so it is easier to eat. When ferrets are sick - they do not have much energy to crunch their hard food. I also give them Blue Wilderness wet cat food and mix a little warm water in it.
