  • Proteus -- Buy Here -- A sort of zen adventure game where you awaken near an island, and it's left up to you to explore it. If you want. But nothing happens and the game doesn't end if you don't. Each island is procedurally generated, and there are no goals. You just walk around and look at the scenery, and sometimes stuff happens. It's pretty chill, though, and I've found it relaxing.
  • Myst Series:
    • realMyst Masterpiece -- Buy Here -- You find a book inscribed with the word "MYST". As you open it up, you find a mysterious moving image on the first page. You find it so compelling to reach out and touch it...
    • Riven: The Sequel to Myst -- Buy Here -- Your new friend Atrus asks for your help to rescue his wife, Catherine, from the dying world of Riven... (Note: may require fiddling to run on modern PCs)
    • Myst III: Exile -- Buy Here (not available digitally) -- You visit Atrus and his family at their new home when tragedy strikes, and you must rescue a stolen book in a forgotten land. (Note: may require fiddling to run on modern PCs)
    • Myst IV: Revelation -- Buy Here (not available digitally) -- You visit Atrus and his family again, but are knocked out by a small earthquake while watching Atrus' daughter, Yeesha. When you awaken, you find she has gone missing, and must find her before Atrus returns...
    • Myst V: End of Ages -- Buy Here -- You find yourself in K'veer, the place Atrus was confined in Myst and the beginning of Riven. As you explore, you meet Yeesha, who gives you a quest to free a slave race from their slavery...but you also meet Esher, a mystery man who hates Yeesha and wants you to know how she is tricking you.
    • Myst Online: Uru Live -- Download Here -- You (IRL you, not the you from the other 5 games) find yourself compelled to visit the desert, where you discover a near-ancient cleft home and a link to the old city of D'ni...
  • World of Zoo -- Buy Here -- You're a new zookeeper. You create animals, add them to each exhibit, play with them, feed them, and get access to new animals. The end. It's cute and kind of dumb. LOL
  • Bejeweled 3 -- Buy Here -- You know this game. It's like all the others. Anyway, there's a Zen Mode in the game where you can turn off the awesome music and instead turn on like ocean waves and shit, and binaural sounds to calm you and all that. That's why I included this game.
  • Kami -- Buy Here -- Fill the screen with a single color in the least amount of moves. The music is calming and the puzzles aren't very harsh. It's nice. :D
  • Knytt Series:
    • Knytt -- Download Here -- You are a knytt. You decide to go on a little adventure, when you're abducted by an alien! The alien proceeds to accidentally crash on another planet, and it's up to you to find all the alien's spaceship parts so you both can go home.
    • Knytt Stories -- Download Here (levels here) -- The story depends on what level you're playing, but you're usually playing as Juni and something happens to make you explore. This is one of the nicest games I have ever played, as well as one of the most relaxing.
    • Knytt Underground -- Buy Here -- You are Mi Sprocket, a mute sprite living in an underground world populated entirely by fairies and sprites. On a very special day, it is tasked to you to ring the six bells of fate scattered around this underground world...and if you don't, the world will end!
  • Tabletop Simulator -- Buy Here -- It's a game where you can play board/card/DnD/etc games by yourself or with your friends. That can be zen. Here are some of the games you can find on the workshop: Tatenoko, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Candy Land, Cards Against Humanity, Hanafuda, Monopoly, CTHULHU!!, Secret Hitler, Triple Triad, and The Hyrule Fantasy. I'd play a couple games of whatever with you, if that makes any difference.
  • Lyne -- Buy Here -- Make lines between all the colored shapes, but you can't cross the lines! It's a quiet little game with an interesting atmosphere. Also the pictures on all the achievements you can get are boxes with letters in them, meaning you can spell out words on your profile.

Hahaha, went through the same thing some time ago. A couple bits of advice:

  • In general, turn-based games will be your best bet, but by no means does this constrain you to RPGs (at the moment I'm playing Dungeons of Dredmor, which can be done entirely with the mouse). I did well with some titles like Gratuitous Space Battles and Dwarf Fortress (which although realtime, can be paused at any time and controlled by just the keyboard).

  • Consider puzzle or puzzle-like games

  • I seem to recall a few DS / 3DS games having alternate button presets specifically designed to allow the game to be played with just one hand, but can't remember off the top of my head which ones...

  • Also, macros/hotkeys can be very useful. Something like Auto Hotkey / X-Mouse Button Control combined with either a cheap gaming mouse with multiple buttons, or a keyboard-heavy game can allow you to map all the keyboard commands to the mouse, or map any complicated commands to one chunk of the keyboard.

  • In TF2 I can confirm from experience that it is possible to play Sniper, run up to a Sniping Spot by alternating between the mouse and keyboard, then just camp out using only the mouse. Obviously wouldn't work for competitive stuff, but on pubs it went surprisingly well. For extra credit, copy to your clipboard some text like, "You just got sniped by someone holding a baby" and hit Ctrl-V + Enter after every kill :D

  • Something I didn't discover for a very long time: any product similar to a Baby Bjorn is an absolute gamechanger. Hours at a time, with both hands free!

Getting started is pretty simple. The official rules are posted here for all to read. You don't need to purchase any books or anything immediately. You can send the rules to your friends to read over, though I would suggest that you all read over them together, it's more fun that way.

All you need to play your first game is the starter set + the rules I linked above.

The starter set is not very long so you could read through the whole thing or just a few pages at a time before your players reach those sections.

I have friends who picked up the starter set and read the rules in 1 night, then started their game the next day. It's pretty easy to pick up for new players.

Edit: While I recommend the starter set

I will add that if you use roll20, you can roll dice and create characters on there, so you don't need to buy dice, etc.

You might like "Building & Co." but be aware it's mediocre buggy game and hard to find. The worst part I remember was the game did not make it easy to plan out spaces, and this was annoying because of the strict requirements (building must be xxx sqft, must have 3 offices with size of 10x20 or whatever) and difficulty of redoing something if you made a mistake. It means you'd have to preplan your building on some graphpaper first. However this totally fits in with the games tagline of "be the architect, city planner, and foreman". Gotta come up with some blueprints before you build something ;).

I do want to try it out again however.

Another person suggested learning SketchUp and that is actually a great idea. There's lots of books that will teach you how to use SketchUp (which is free for person use) and will teach it to you while having you build a residential home. You can get used text books from Amazon for really cheap as long as you don't buy the latest or previous year. Just go a few years back and the price drops dramatically. Trust me that the software and contents of the book don't change significantly over the years. I got this book on making a home to learn Revit (which is free for educational use) and it's also a similar to SketchUp fairly easy to learn the basics.

I know this is a bit tangential, but a few years ago I broke my right hand (one of the bones between the wrist and the base of the finger) but couldn't work without using a mouse. I ended up buying one of these and could use it while my hand was in a cast and even raided in WoW with it.

I should have read more carefully, sorry.
The PC version and PS1 versions are on Amazon. It's also on the PSN if you have a modern playstation system. For PC, it might work with compatibility mode in Windows 10 (W10 supposedly plays nicer with older games) or by using a virtual install of Windows 95. Maybe DOSBox is an option?

Oh man, Dino Crisis, fuck me. It's been 15+ years since have absolutely no idea what happened to Regina and Dylan. Word around the campfire is, there will be a DC4 in the upcoming years.

I would suggest getting Midnight Nowhere. I don't think it's available on steam or something alike, but you can buy it on Amazon. It's a really interesting, and, to an extent, thought-provoking game that has an ending that would be considered cliché now, but I liked it back when I played.

System Shock 2 is not in the RE-SH-DC vein, it's an FPS, but it most definitely matches your collecting-micromanagement-puzzle-etc criteria. In fact, it's almost impossible to have a decent run in the game without properly managing your resources.

To an extent, Bioshock, maybe? Not much in the puzzle field though.

Allison Road looks promising as well, but as far as I know, it has not been released yet.

+1 to Evil Within and Metro.

If you're looking for something a bit unique and tongue-in-cheek, check out Stubbs the Zombie. Pretty unique concept, as you play a zombie in the 50's-themed future.

u/WinterZenyth · 1 pointr/gamingsuggestions

That's not a thing, sorry. The closest you're going to get is trying to find a gift card for 3 months of Game Pass Ultimate, but those are flying off the shelves, and you can only use them once per account per year.

You could always get them a prepaid credit card and just tell them to use that to pay for it. $60 should cover a year, assuming they are eligible for the $1 first month promo .

When I was a kid, I really liked the game Cootie.
