Looking at your budget you will have no trouble finding a very good laptop on the market. I would advise you to pick these laptops up online on either their respecive retail websites, amazon.com, or newegg.com if you want to get the better deal. But other than that, I would think that your best all around option would be the xps 15, found here: http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/xps-15-9560-laptop?view=configurations , which starts at 999 but goes up to something like 1900 if you go with the i7 version, you should be able to play around with the configuration. It has a great battery, relatively light, can be configured with a gtx 1050, and doesn't look like a gaming laptop with the loud colors.

Gigabyte Aero 14:
Another recommendation that is at the top of your price range but has top tier performance, a great battery, is lightweight for its size, and doesn't go crazy with a gamer vibe would be the gigabyte aero 14, found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=34-233-191R (is an open box). Other than that, the laptop can and will be able to play anything you would throw at it at ultra settings in 1080p; the laptop also has a massive battery that can last for nearly ten hours non-gaming. Great laptop for the higher end of your budget.

Alienware 13:
The last reccomendation I have is much more gamer heavy than the previous two and has a smaller screen, is thicker and heavier, but built like a tank. If you want a strong feeling laptop that has a gamer look the alienware 13 is a good choice, found here (sorry for the length): http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/alienware-13-laptop/dkcwkble1s?ref=287_customize&dgc=ba&dgseg=dhs&cid=235789&lid=27867&ACD=123092357892786720c101671614&VEN3=271303854282091772&selectionState=eyJGUHJpY2UiOjE0NDkuOTksIk9DIjoiZGtjd2tibGUxcyIsIlF0eSI6MSwiTW9kcyI6W3siSWQiOjE0NiwiT3B0cyI6W3siSWQiOiI1TlZXR1kifV19LHsiSWQiOjYsIk9wdHMiOlt7IklkIjoiMTA1MFRJMiIsIlByaWNlIjo1MC4wfV19LHsiSWQiOjc2MCwiT3B0cyI6W3siSWQiOiJGSERLQkwiLCJQcmljZSI6MTAwLjB9XX0seyJJZCI6MywiT3B0cyI6W3siSWQiOiIxNkcyNDAwIiwiUHJpY2UiOjIwMC4wfV19LHsiSWQiOjgsIk9wdHMiOlt7IklkIjoiMjU2U1NEIiwiUHJpY2UiOjIwMC4wfV19LHsiSWQiOjEwMTUsIk9wdHMiOlt7IklkIjoiMTgwVzNQIn1dfV19 . The cost of the device to have the better graphics card, better processor, and better storage brings it up to around 1400 or so dollars for the laptop. If you want the bigger brother, the alienware 15, with the gtx 1060 and gamer look, it can be found for around 1550 after configuring here: http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/alienware-15-laptop/dkcwkblf011ss?selectionState=eyJGUHJpY2UiOjE1MjQuOTksIk9DIjoiZGtjd2tibGYwMTFzcyIsIlF0eSI6MSwiTW9kcyI6W3siSWQiOjE0NiwiT3B0cyI6W3siSWQiOiI1OVg1OE0ifV19LHsiSWQiOjYsIk9wdHMiOlt7IklkIjoiR1RYMTA2MCIsIlByaWNlIjoyMDAuMH1dfSx7IklkIjo4LCJPcHRzIjpbeyJJZCI6IjEyODFUQiIsIlByaWNlIjoxNzUuMH1dfSx7IklkIjoxMTIsIk9wdHMiOlt7IklkIjoiNkMiLCJQcmljZSI6NTAuMH1dfV19

I would not buy the HP laptop for the following reasons:

  1. It only has a 1366x768 resolution screen. The lower the resolution, the less information you can see on the screen at once. Try setting the resolution on your laptop's screen or desktop monitor to 1366x768 to see what it looks like. Note that setting the resolution below the native (max) resolution will make text look a little blurry. I generally a 1080p screen (1920x1080).
  2. The laptop relies on the Intel UHD 620 graphics core. While it can be used to play some non-graphically demanding games (like some old games from before 2012) or some indie games; it is generally not recommend for games that can be rather demanding like Fornite or Overwatch. They are not very demanding games at all compared to something like the Witcher 3, but they are not games ideal for the Intel UHD 620 especially Fornite.

    ======================================

The following Acer Aspire E15 E5-576G-5762 laptop for $560 represents the best bang for the buck when it comes to gaming performance. It is the least expensive laptop with the nVidia mx150 which is more powerful than the integrated Vega 8 graphics core in the Ryzen 5 2500u APU which is in the Dell Inspirion 15 5000 laptop. However, it is a heavier laptop at 5.27lbs and it comes with a smaller 256GB SSD.

    https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLBJV7/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=mx150+laptop&qid=1563814234&s=gateway&sr=8-3

The ASUS Vivobook K570ZD for $640 represents the least expensive laptop with the nvidia GTX 1050 which is definitely more powerful than nVidia mx150 in the Acer laptop. It is paired with the 1st generation Ryzen 5 2500u APU. It only has a 256GB SSD, and it weighs in at 4.32lbs according to the specs listed on Amazon. Be aware that the battery is usually the heaviest component in a laptop. Laptops typically sacrifice battery life in exchange for being lighter. Never trust what the brand name advertises for battery life. That is usually extremely optimistic; in this case Asus advertises 9 hours. The rule of thumb is cut what is advertised in half when doing things that are not CPU and / or graphically intensive. If playing games, then cut that in half again (if not more). Read user reviews to get a better idea though.

    https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Vivobook-GeForce-Fingerprint-Backlit/dp/B07MKLLVFZ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=gtx+1050+laptop&qid=1563818215&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Acer Nitro 5 (2017 version) with Intel i5-7300HQ and GTX 1050 Ti. This is absolutely the most powerful gaming laptop for less than $700; it's $698. The GTX 1050 Ti is probably about 25% more powerful than the GTX 1050. It only has a 256GB SSD.

    https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Gaming-i5-7300HQ-GeForce-AN515-51-55WL/dp/B074Q54GSR/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=gtx+1050+laptop&qid=1563818575&s=gateway&sr=8-10

I purchased the 2018 version as a gift which has the newer Intel i5-8300H which is slightly more powerful thant the i5-7300HQ, but still has the GTX 1050 Ti. I can tell you that battery life is short at 3.5 hours with average usage. I assume the i5-7300HQ can get hot similar to the i5-8300H CPU. I recommend downloading a program called ThrottleStop to undervolt the CPU. Google for instructions on how to use ThrottleStop. Out of the box the i5-8300H hit 95c when I was stressing the CPU, using ThrottleStop helped reduce that to about 86c. That's considered "warm". You can leave it as is, but if you want lower temps, then the thermal paste would need to be replaced with something good like Artic MX-4 (or the more expensive but highly praised Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut). Doing so decreased the max temp to something like 77c from what I recall (as stated it was purchased to be given as a gift). However, doing so does void the warranty so if you do not want to risk loosing the warranty, then do not replace the thermal paste until after the warranty has ended.

size is a big one for students. 15.6in is good, but if you have a small pack or need it to be smaller 13 inch laptops are out there. since students would be using their computer a lot to open things like word documents or spreadsheets, so you need a fast but efficient processor and a good amount of ram like maybe 8 or 16gb, like a ryzen 5 3500u.

the amd laptops are cheaper and offer similar performance to intel laptops. look for laptops with ssds, so it starts up fast and is snappy. though ssds are small in capacity unless you need to have large photoshop or 3d modeling stuff on the laptop, ssds are definately the better option for students.

look for either high quality plastic chassis or metal chassis, as these are durable and are good for taking out/putting away a lot, and are generally light as most metal laptop chassis are aluminum these days.

you should also look for laptops with a good battery life, at least around 19~14 hours. also look for USB-C charging capable laptops as a lot of phones have them nowadays, so you only have to carry one charger if your phone uses USB-C, and you can transfer files between your phone and laptop quickly if you need to.

also look for thin designs as these are easy to carry, usually lighter than textbooks and dont make you tired carrying around all day.

here are some good examples of what i just said: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-330S-15ARR-Laptop-Memory-Platinum/dp/B07HGTFTZB/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=ryzen+5+3500u+thin+light&qid=1574045426&sr=8-7 according to reviews of this, as long as you remove McAfee "antivirus" it is blazing fast

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-R5-3500U-Graphics-F512DA-EB51/dp/B07QQB7552/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=thin+light+laptop+amd&qid=1574045773&sr=8-2 fast cpu and good amount of storage. REMOVE MCAFEE if its there

You have a huge number of options depending on what you are really looking for. Specs to look for would probably be an i7 processor, 8GB or more RAM, and an excellent, dedicated graphics card if you work with 3D imaging, or a normal, integrated graphics card if you just work with normal images. You can also decide between a SSD, a HDD, or both. I would recommend an SSD unless you need 1TB of storage space and don't want to use an external hard drive.

You also should look for something with a good IPS screen, and likely 15 inch screen rather than just 13 since you don't seem to mind poor portability and weight.

I can give a few recommendations in a bit

Ok recommendations.

If you really want to budget, you could get away completely fine with a refurbished HP Pavilion for just $620. This would be good if you want to save money, don't do 3D graphics rendering, and are fine with an HDD instead of an SSD.

If you want really good value, and are fine with a 'gamer looking' laptop, an MSI GL62 would be a good pick for $900. It would have basically everything you need. Especially good if you do 3D graphics with the 960M.

I can offer more options if you want. Just let me know what you are looking for based on what I've offered, and what you want different.

Also, if you want another Zenbook and are fine with a 13 inch screen, the Zenbook 303UB is a great choice for $1180. Would be extremely portable.

>I'm willing to go in for a low to mid 700's laptop if it will handle downloads and run files quicker.

Slow download speeds can be due to a slow internet connection. Check your download/upload speeds here. As for running files, that depends on what type of file. Some files require a better graphics card such as if it's a game or editting software, while others simply require a better processor and/or RAM.

>What would you consider a light game?

In my mind, a light game is a game that isn't very graphics heavy and doesn't require a gaming PC/console to run. Newer AAA games such as Battlefield, CoD, and NBA2K19 will require a gaming PC, but games like Minecraft, browser based games, and essentially any game that doesn't require intense graphics to run is light.

> you have any recommendations for good laptops in the 700 dollar range that have good processing power and RAM?

While I can't exactly "recommend" laptops since I haven't used these, this laptop should allow you to run LoL and multitask with ease. Hell, with the specs you might be able to run some AAA games. It's extremely close to your $700 range, but allows you to add an SSD to work alongside the 1TB HDD if you feel it's too slow and add more RAM if 8GB isn't enough. If you're not experienced with SSD/HDD swaps/additions or adding RAM, I'd highly suggest looking up a tutorial on it before opening up the laptop or buying something you can't use.

Once again, this is a laptop very close to your price limit but it should be able to get what you want done. I can't promise that it'll be able run AAA games, but unless it's faulty it definitely will be able to multitask and run lighter games. If for some reason it can't, you need to get a refund somehow. According to Amazon, it has an 8.5 hour battery life, but that might go down if you're running a game and Chrome.

These are gaming laptops. If you aren't into gaming laptops, I recommend looking at the recommended specs of games/applications and going for a laptop with better specs. Like I said before, I can't exactly recommend laptops since I haven't used these, but I have a feeling the laptops above should be able to get the job done. You'll likely need to do some more research for yourself, like contacting the brand and asking them about if the specific laptop can do what you want it to.

These are only two examples, but there is more than likely cheaper options that'll get the job done.

If you are using them for 10hrs, battery life is a good concern.

Gaming, it seems to be secondary for you.

Hard-Drive, better have a SSD instead of HDD.

What is good storage for you? Most standar laptops are coming with 256GB discs, for me that´s plenty. How much are you using right now? (Not if you current laptops is 1TB, but how much of that you have in files?)

For 1k you can have quite good units, it´s not a very low buget (there are laptops for 200$, those are the very low price laptops)

Lenovo 720S series are quite good, Acer Swift 3, there´s the Asus Zenbook 13inch.

If you want something larger theres is the Acer R15 https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Laptop-GeForce-R5-571TG-7229/dp/B06WD61CF5/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1521222563&sr=1-9&keywords=ultrabook

You have a lot of options to check. I´m looking for something similar too, from what I´ve learned, Intel i5 8250U+MX150 is the best configuration at this price. Look for at least 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and you can be sure you will be well served.

u/legonate416 · 1 pointr/laptops

Here's the cheapest GTX 1060 laptop currently on Amazon... It's $1065 right now, but it also only has an i5 7300HQ and 8gb of RAM (the other option had 16gb and an i7 7700HQ). It's also 5.8lbs, and I don't know about you, but I wouldn't call that "light".

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0764HW117/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1509979426&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=gtx+1060+laptop+dell&dpPl=1&dpID=412Q0LFcTBL&ref=plSrch

Decent gamig laptop prices have definitely jumped. About a year ago you could get a few GTX 1060/7700HQ laptops for $900-$950. Now it seems like most of them have all jumped to $1200+.

If you're prepared to play games at minimum settings, A GTX 1050 and 1050 TI would serve your purposes very well. I would browse around on Amazon for a 1050 TI laptop for $700-$800. I have seen a few.

Sorry about the price change! It was definitely $1049 yesterday, haha.

u/The--Technician · 1 pointr/laptops

I think a laptop with a gtx 960m will be out performed by a desktop with a gtx 760 slightly...If I were you , I would definitely go for a laptop with gtx 970 which would be fantastic. This ASUS ROG G751JT-WH71(WX) would be a great selection.. It has a nice i7 quad core processor, 16 GB RAM, a 1 TB HDD in addition to a fast 128 GB SSD , and of course a GTX 970M 3GB dedicated graphics card with G-Sync technology ... This laptop also has a nice cooling system, solid keyboard and excellent display quality..

u/edit1754 · 2 pointsr/laptops

I generally don't recommend this laptop, due to the fact that it uses a very poor quality TN display, instead of an IPS display or at least a good TN display. It has grayish blacks, washed-out colors, poor viewing angles, and it's really easy to get something better for the price. IMO the difference between a good display and a not-so-good one is a lot more noticeable than the differences between most other specs, and to me the X556UQ is at too high a price to use such a poor display. The difference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH7Etz_3Mp8 More of the difference: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/y50-replacement-displays-compendium.755626/page-39

Also be aware that the i7-6500U is a dual-core processor, that is only a few percentage points over an i5-6200U. If you need to do something heavily CPU-bound such as editing video, you probably need a quad core, for which there are both i5 and i7 branded chips. If you don't, then an i5-6200U should be just about as good as an i7-6200U. The way I see it the i7-6500U mainly just makes laptops cost more for no real benefit. The i5 and i7 brands have lost much of their meaning over time, in my eyes, due to the way Intel has used them.

If you liked this laptop for its SSD, you could do one of the following in order to get a better display:

I’ve extensively researched the Razer Blade (was originally planning to purchase until I found Dell XPS 15), but never actually bought it.

~~If you don’t mind gaming at slightly lower settings, there’s many options already or about to be released, manufacturers are increasingly producing more “portable gaming” laptops, such as this Asus ZenBook

The GPU is MX150 (Mobile GT 1030), however it does surprisingly well in AAA games at reduced settings. Unless your studies demand a faster computer (computer science, etc) this should be good for a few years to come. ~~

Edit: Sorry, didn’t realise you wanted to play VR as well. However I would suggest a desktop PC for VR, as better laptop hardware can be a lot more expensive.

u/SolidCalm · 2 pointsr/laptops

According to this review, the fan is quiet even gaming.

If you want a beast yet nice laptop, maybe this is better. Great build quality over here, for sure.

This one is good also, but I prefer Dell's.

That being said, if you don't want hardcore ultra graphics in new games, the ultrabook from Asus is easily one of the best options, as well as a HP Envy 13 with MX150 (not available right now as far as I can see, but you can see specs here).

u/TacticalBastard · 2 pointsr/laptops

If "future-proofing" is what you're into, either buy a Alienware, or a Razer laptop. Both have fully functioning eGPU cases, that work wonderfully. Since your budget is 1.5k you will want to go with Alienware, but if you're budget increases and you want a smaller form factor and a more professional look, Razer is also a good option.

However if you don't like either of those and still want the future proofing. Get something with a Thunderbolt/USB-C port. More and more laptops will be receiving software updates to support eGPU's and as long as they have TB, they should be able to support it eventually and it will be compatible with any TB based eGPU (The only one I know of at the moment is the Razer Core, which has issues on all other devices than the Razer Blade and the Stealth

Here are some good ones to check out
The ROG G75JT At 1.2k

And the MSI GE62 Apache Pro at 1.1k

Both have thunderbolt so future proofing is might be possible eventually.

They provided to reason at all. Even after I pressed them.
Amazon would be a great option but I dont think they have any of the i7 models in stock.

Edit: hang on looks like you can go here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CTHN94Z/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and then select amazon shipping on the side and its actually cheaper and fulfilled by amazon. I dont know why it isnt defaulting to that but I just ordered one.
Thanks!

Portability + power is a bit of an issue. That said, here are some sub-$1500 suggestions from Amazon:

u/tigerbreak · 1 pointr/laptops

Neither are great for your application, but the Ryzen will be better in this case. See if you can pickup a 3rd generation Ryzen (sometimes the Ryzen 5 models go on sale) for the best budget results in the < 500$ range.

Ryzen 5 Vivobook, good choice.

Ryzen 5 Ideapad, decent choice

Refurbed Aspire Ryzen 5, budget choice

Hello, for a budget gaming laptop, I will recommend you to start with the Y520 but unfortunately it is above your budget. It is a pretty decent gaming laptop. Here's one review take a look and decide if it is worth the money. Anything lower than this, may not be about the support your games smoothly. Good luck!

you can play fallout 4 and skyrim above low settings on something like a 940m for only like $500

or get something like this with a 960m which will play fallout 4 on high and skyrim maxed probably for only $840

for that kinda stuff, you dont need a 900 dollar laptop. A surface go with an i5 with 8 gigs of ram will do. I reccomend this device cous you say couler accuratie is realy important to you and the screen of the surface devices are realy good. also you say that you want to take notes on it for scool. On these things you can write realy easy. But if you dont want a tablet like divice (it runs a full windows version) the vivobook and lenovo flex are realy good options. These are cheaper as well.

That is an ok price for that laptop, but its definitely not worth 900 anymore. If you want something more gaming centric, this Refurbished Acer has a more powerful CPU and gtx 1050 GPU but a smaller SSD. It is also available new for $700 in an even more powerful 1050 ti configuration.

u/[deleted] · 4 pointsr/laptops

If she wants something really thin and stylish, which is what is "most popular" right now, she'll have to pay a premium. E.g.:
https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX305CA-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01578SQFU/
An XPS 13 can also be had for $800 or less. Overkill for what she needs, obviously, but the best laptops for her purposes nonetheless due to superior screens, touchpads, keyboards, portability, build quality, wireless cards, etc.

u/MurlocWarleader · 1 pointr/laptops

That explains it quite well, just not even remotely close to knowledge in the technology and electronics section of anything at all. Seems like I've decided to solidify a choice in snatching possibly this. Your help is appreciated :)

u/swegover9000 · 2 pointsr/laptops

I also have this laptop and feel it's a great buy for those who don't want to spend $2k+ on an XPS 15 or MacBook Pro (which are good products but just pricey). If you are looking for a smaller laptop, you won't get something as fast in a relatively thin package. This is the Zenbook Pro's smaller brother the Asus UX303. ASUS ZenBook UX303UB 13.3-Inch QHD+ Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core i7, 12 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Discrete GPU Nvidia GT940M, Windows 10 (64 bit) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014VHVZFQ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_s0hDxb9PTKCY3 it's solid but doesn't have a type c port. Otherwise it's a great laptop.

> Best specs for price, large harddrive space,

In terms of specs for price, this guy is an incredibly easy recommendation: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RF2123Z

However, it doesn't come with too much storage. In 2019 you'll want an SSD as your boot drive at the very least. It should be relatively to upgrade the SSD in this laptop if you genuinely do need more capacity. For $110, you can turn those 256 GB into 1 TB of storage: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAND-2280SS-Internal/dp/B0784SY515

This would result in a $620 total price tag, and for a laptop with 8 gb ram/i5 8th gen/1 tb ssd storage, that's quite good.

u/pancak3d · 2 pointsr/laptops

EDIT: Note the price is up to $700 now on Amazon. Still a good price but there are other competitive models like this from Lenovo. I still prefer the Inspiron at $700.

I spent about a month searching/waiting for a better deal and nothing came up. I would note that it is 5 or 6 lbs so not ideal for carrying around campus. Looking for something slimmer/lighter with these specs will drive the price way up. There's also a model here for $750 with touchscreen and a faster processor, but SSHD instead of SSD.

u/iizicoo · 1 pointr/laptops

Its no doubt a pricey product, but you are getting something so great.

Check out this one too ( https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-Anti-Glare-Display-i7-8750H-GeForce/dp/B07BSXCCHK?th=1 )

I have just found it, it looks great and its 1700$ with the discount.

But I'm really really confused about what should I get.... god there are lots of great products out there.

u/Supdawg · 2 pointsr/laptops

You might want to bump up to 14". Laptops that size are a bit cheaper and more common, while still being almost half the weight of a 15.6". I'd highly recommend getting something with a ryzen mobile or 8th gen i5/i7 since this latest gen of mobile processors is pretty much exclusively quad core instead of dual like the past decade or so.

EDIT: If you can raise the budget some, then this asus looks ok.

u/thekevinmeister · 0 pointsr/laptops

I'm looking at getting the UX303UA. It's almost exactly like the one you linked except for a few things: it has a Skylake CPU (slightly better performance and battery life) and a glossy touchscreen display. The 305 has a matte non-touchscreen display. The color and finish of the laptops are also slightly different. If you want the i5, you're gonna have to get the Titanium Gold color. For some reason Asus only offers certain CPUs with certain colors. I wish they wouldn't do that. Anyway, my friend has the exact one you linked, and he loves it. I've played with it and I would have no problem using it as a work or school laptop, but I personally want the Skylake CPU and the glossy touchscreen.

Edit: the UX303UA is the exact same as the UX303LA other than the CPU. LA has a Broadwell and UA has a Skylake.

With that said, here's a really nice thin/light laptop with great build quality:

u/Dan6erbond · 1 pointr/laptops

Obviously you want something with an i7 and a dGPU. I would say something that has the MX150 or GTX1050 to stay within the price limit and depending on how big the laptop should be, I can recommend these:

u/Iskiroson · 1 pointr/laptops

surface book and macbook pro are outside of your price range, unless you want to buy and older model.

u/RA2lover · 1 pointr/laptops

You're paying a premium for the 2-in-1 form factor and touchscreen, and it lacks dedicated graphics(though they've gotten good enough you don't need them if you're not intending to play games with the laptop).

Assuming you don't need the touchscreen and form factor, this laptop goes for $680, has a quad-core processor (U-series processors are dual-core ones) and a 950M GPU.

this one is significantly cheaper by using a 7200U while retaining the 950M and SSD(but still ditching the form factor/touchscreen).

u/laptopquesting · 2 pointsr/laptops

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06XFGDD8P/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile?th=1&psc=1

Maybe that one, I'd recommend at least a 1050 for your needs although a 1050 ti would be better. Most of the ones you listed won't be able to handle your games.

u/acting_actuary · 3 pointsr/laptops

Welcome! I could have gotten a bad unit, but it was enough of a bad experience for me to go back to a more reputable brand (in my experience). Also, the keyboard was a little loud to type on.

If you're curious this is what I ended up getting and I love it. I'd prefer a matte screen to prevent glare, but the touch screen does come in handy sometimes.

u/glymao · 2 pointsr/laptops

If Mac is necessary, and the computer is in good condition (make sure to run stress tests), then yes. But if that is not the case, you can get decent Windows ultraportables at this price like this.

u/techneeeq · 1 pointr/laptops

The price is real.. I would prefer go for this though. A much bigger SSD for only a few dollars more and it has an outstanding build quality.

u/ponchovawdrey · 1 pointr/laptops

I recently bought the Acer Aspire 5 A515-54-51DJ I paid a little over $500 for this laptop and have been enjoying it. Its given me no problems, and its very fast. The only downside to this this model in particular, is that it only has 256GB of SSD. But from what I've been told, the SSD is a big contributor to its speed. So I decided that I could just buy a 2TB External Hard-drive from amazon for like 60-70 Dollars and still have a sub $600 laptop that is just as capable as a different laptop thats twice the price.

I just bought the ASUS UX303UB for grad school this fall and I love it. It was about $1200 USD but they also have the UX303UA which is cheaper. The UA has an i5, 256 SSD, and 8 GB RAM while the UB has an i7, 512 SSD, and 12 GB RAM. I can handle most games on mine but I'm not sure about the UA. If it's not heavy gaming, I think you will be fine. Both are 13.3 inches and lightweight.

How does the 7th gen i7 compare to 8th gen i5?

I just bought the Asus Zenbook UX330UA over the Asus Zenbook UX430DB71BL. My main concern was battery usage-seems like they had comparable performance but the i7 would drain the battery. Also, my computing demands are minimal (web, word,etc.).

Thanks, this info will definitely help.

I've been looking into the Asus ROG series actually, and I think that's what I want. I was especially looking at this GL552VW-DH71, actually, with the 128 GB SSD and 4G VRAM, at http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01578ZKPO/ref=psdcmw_565108_t1_B00T7XRH2A?th=1&psc=1.

What do you think of this one? The only problems I could find are that it has some minor software problems, but a few updates and setting changes should take care of those. Also, some reviews expressed a mild disappointment towards the touchpad, but I'm not too deterred.

Or would you still recommend that last laptop you mentioned? My problem with it is that it's a little too big. I'm looking at the 15" range, I think.

  1. the difference between the flex 14 and the s340 is

    the s340 isn't a 2-in-1 nor is it touchscreen.

it has the same intel processor that is in lenovo 6 which like I said is slightly better than the amd one in the flex 14.

It has a larger 512gb ssd.

it seems to be capable of being charged with a regular usb-c cable.

it has a worse screen with a lower resolution of 768p vs 1080p in the flex 14.

    and its slightly more expensive.

    ........................

2.If you want something that's not a 2-in-1 or touchscreen I would recommend the acer aspire 5 $509:

Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6" Full HD IPS Display, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U, 8GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Backlit Keyboard, Fingerprint Reader, Windows 10 Home, A515-54-51DJ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF2123Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YDIoDbRP6M3V8

there is also a model with a discrete graphics card that has better graphics than the flex 14 for $559:

    Acer Aspire E 15 Laptop, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, GeForce MX150, 8GB RAM Memory, 256GB SSD, E5-576G-5762 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FLBJV7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iNIoDbKQ1BN61

there is also a model with 12gb of ram and 512gb ssd for $599:

Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6" Full HD IPS Display, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U, 12GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Backlit Keyboard, Fingerprint Reader, Windows 10 Pro, A515-54-51DJ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VQPM71V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vOIoDbPRRRSKE

    ..........

the dell inspiron 15 5000 ($589) is also good with a the same processor as the acer and 12gb of ram instead of 8gb.

it also has a touchscreen display and larger 1tb hard drive, but no ssd so it will take longer to boot up and load windows and applications.

I'd pick this Dell, it has a GTX 1050, 8gb ram and a quad core i5 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XFG7157) and it's $636 at the moment.

Any idea about what kind of panel the 5577 has? Also, do you know anything about its performance and how it stacks up against the 7567?

I have this one I use it for coding watching streams on twitch or YouTube or Netflix when I’m at uni or on the go. But always watch YouTube vids and reviews online on any computer and make your own decision.

It's oddly under the name "M580VD" instead of N580VD, but referencing one of the reviewers:
"This is the Canadian version of the N580VD. I am not sure why they are selling this instead of the US variant. However, that is what Asus told me. I haven’t noticed any difference between this and the US version, so I do not see any issue with buying this instead."
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071ZL3996/ref=twister_B073WXB41S?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

and here's what's apparently the "US" release on B&H, still on preorder

Try to avoid intel m-prozessors then, i would go for a asus ux303ua with a Skylake i5 and FHD-Touchdisplay.

I have the lb with i7 and 940m and the touchpad is perfect for my standarts.

If you want to get a cheaper one: the 305 has no backlight, a broadwell i5 and is non touch. If you want to get touch on it you habe to get a QHD display BUT it only comes with a core-m-prozessor and i really dont like those, because then you have a fanless cooling system and the cpu can get really hot when you use your laptop for a longer period.

Here are 2 links to both options:

303: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014VHW24Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1450340762&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=ux303ub&dpPl=1&dpID=41%2BKe3rTWGL&ref=plSrch thats the older broadwell option as i see now, also a option till the differenc is only in the cpu and this not very much

305: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013KKANTE/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?qid=1450341193&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=ux303ub&dpPl=1&dpID=51C1sNaz87L&ref=plSrch
