Essential shoping list (to me)

-[6" fan and carbon filter]
(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008NYF8S4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) works great, no smell, plenty of airflow, relatively loud at 100%, virtually silent when turned down to below 30% with some sound absorbing foam around the intake and fan. 4" would have worked for my small setup. I'm pushing through the filter which is outside my grow area with no problems. Don't forget some ducting and real duct tape. Clamps aren't really needed at these speeds and pressures if you have good tape, but they won't hurt.

Only note is you probably want to get some extra storage solution, it only comes with a little, and after a few months you'll run out.

-Light was a Viparspectra 300 (130 actual watts). Worked well, had good growth. I added more light later but for my small space that would have probably given me decent yields.

It has a bright blue LED indicating if the timer is sending power to the lights which is nice, but I had to tape over it because it was so bright. Also, the timer gets a little warm which makes me a little uneasy since I only have ~250 watts going through it.

-General Hydroponics FloraGrow, FloraMicro, FloraBloom, CaliMagic. I also got Fox Farms Big Bloom part way through flower but don't have any way to know its actual benefits so it's not an essential.

-Coco for growing medium. Most people add perlite, I didn't.

-7 gal smart pot

-Plastic storage container with a kitchen cooling rack to sit the pot into and onto and allow drainage without making a mess. Cooling rack allows for 1/2" of water to accumulate before the pot is sitting in it.

Set up and process

  • In a closet that's 1.8' x 1.8' x 6'

  • Temperatures between 72 F and 80 F. When I measure temp at the bottom of my canopy it's consistently about 5 degrees F below the temp at the top near my fan outlet. I have to use A/C in the room to keep it from moving up to 80 or a bit higher.

  • Humidity between 40% and 60%

  • Coco with about 30% peat moss which included time release nutrients. I didn't want the added nutes and tried running water through it for a few hours to clear it out, but I highly doubt that did anything. I wish I had waited a few days to ship pure peat moss so I could know exactly what nutrients were going into the plant. I picked peat moss because I wanted my pot to hold more water. I'm not sure if this was a good thing or not.

  • 7 gallon smart pot, only ~5.5 gal full though. I'm glad I went with the bigger pot since my plant is so tall and top heavy now. I have read that if you want to go bigger for the pot it's better to go deeper than wider because of the root structure, but I don't know.

  • I sprouted the seed using the paper towel method. Took a few days. Next time I'll probably use the water in a shot glass method.

  • I put the sprouted seed right into the 7 gal smart pot which probably wasn't a great idea. I also watered the entire pot for the first couple weeks which probably was bad. I should have started in a small container and transplant, or at least only water a small area around the seedling at first.

  • I put a bag seed in the same pot and sprouted it because I was dumb and bored. It sprouted and actually got to about 2.5 weeks old before I pulled the trigger and dug it up and transplanted it into it's own 5 gal smart pot. It wasn't happy for a few days because I know I damaged the roots in order to try to avoid the roots of the main plant. I let it grow in the new pot until about 4 weeks then I ran out of room in my closet and trashed the entire plant. Terrible idea all around.

  • Viparspectra 300 initially, then around day 50 of veg I added ~100 watts of CFL. At 40 days after the 12/12 flip I added a galaxy hydro 300 and took out the CFLs (we'll see if that was a good idea...)

  • Veg for 60 days after sprouting. Good idea if you have the vertical space and time. Veg took a long time because I waited too long and the first time I topped I took off like 3 or 4 sets of growth tips, it was like a whole mini plant. I don't know if waiting so long helped the plant develop more roots and a bigger stem which facilitated faster growing or if it was just wasted time. I'm going top it earlier next time though.

  • I topped it twice to get kind of a manifold. The height and size of the colas were not dependent on where it's branch started which makes me doubt the need of a symmetrical manifold, which this was not.

  • Defoliated a little around the 12/12 flip, a lot during about 20-30 days after flipping which left the plant with virtually no fan leaves with stems longer than 1". This was all great, next time I'll probably defoliate earlier.

  • I had to go out of town for 10 days just after the 12/12 flip. I raised up the lights, but not enough and one cola grew into a CFL and killed the top. I cut the top off and now the lower flowers are growing a bit bigger and taller than their partners on other colas, just no top. Also, I only got an automatic watering system set up the night before I left and it didn't water as much as I wanted, plus the pH drifted a lot while I was gone. I started with the pH low to try to mitigate it rising, which I expected. I was expecting the plant to really be struggling, but she looked great actually.

Hey, I JUST came off building a setup and it cost me $750 total. We have 3 plants in there right now. I have the entire list with amazon links or store suggestions.

Absolutely! You can get as crazy as you want with it, but there are some basics you need to figure out before you really start.

Where are you growing this plant? Do you have a space you're going to use? A closet, an unused bathroom, the basement? Are you going to be purchasing a tent, or maybe emptying out a dresser like this?

The light choice is one you can spend many (too many) hours on. LEDS have their benefits and drawbacks, as do CMH. Heat is more of an issue with CMH, but LEDs can also pump out serious heat. CMH is easy to know what to buy, no real dialing in the height, no worry you're not getting the right spectrum, etc. I'll probablu go LED at some point, but for now CMH is easier (for me). This is the CMH kit I started with. Ballast, bulb, reflector all included. if you have an option for the light, you'll want to get one that is 3100K and NOT the 4000K. 3100K is not as good for veg, but is great for flower. You can detatch the ballast from the reflector - helps keep temps in the tent down, since you can place the ballast outside.

How are you going to deal with heat? Lights run hot, and you WILL need to manage it at some point. Check my previous posts to see my light tube setup.

How are you going to deal with smell? Smell will be an issue, no ifs ands or buts. You can DIY carbon filters, but only if you trust yourself to do it right and hope it won't fail. You will need a carbon filter and fan to manage the smell. I'm running a 6" inline fan with a CAN33 filter. There is 0 smell from the exhaust, the filter is clutch. If noise is an issue for you, fans are decently loud running at full tilt. To work around this, a speed controller on a larger diameter fan, turned down to a lower speed, will reduce noise significantly while giving you the same airflow as a smaller fan on high.

You'll need to get soil and nutrients. Myself and a lot of growers really like Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil. FF Happy Frog is another good one. Get fabric pots if you can - lets the roots breathe a bit.

The above is very, very basic starting info. An enclosed space to grow; an exhaust fan and odor control; full spectrum light; water and nutrients.

    So for about $420 (heh), you can get your foot in the door and start growing. This is a nice setup too, you can probably save $100 by shopping around, buying used, or doing-it-yourself. I've left off a few odds and ends like dryer duct, Fiskers for trimming, weed fabric pins for low-stress training, pitcher for watering, Mason jars for storage, but you can likely find those or suitable replacements around the house without spending money.

    I also have a Raspberry Pi 3 ($43) with Sense Hat ($37) and metal case ($15) in each of my grow tents to log temperature/humidity and other things. I'm interested in eventually using the GPIO functionality to water my plants too. Not critical, but definitely a nice thing to have, especially if you're the hacker type.     I'm glad I bought a good intro setup because I still use it now that I've upgraded. I now have a 3' x 3' GG Shorty tent with HLG 300 LED for flower, a 2' x 2.5' GG Shorty tent with two 400W Roleadro COB's for veg, and my "intro package" is now my germination/cloning tent (and drying tent too since several people suggested that too). Being able to have three tents (germination -> veg -> flower) working simultaneously is increasing my output quite sharply. I'm doing this to help a relative with cancer, so you may not need to go quite as crazy as I did.

    You mentioned using 35+ gs (~1.25 oz) a month. You probably aren't going to be able to grow that much given the constraints of tent size and light wattage (plus being a first-time grower! You'll learn a lot!). So once you get used to it, you'll probably want to buy more stuff. Marijuana isn't addictive, but growing marijuana absolutely is.

    Once you've got your hardware, the variable cost is seed (~$10), soil (~$5), nutrients (~$20), and electricity (~$30). From that, I'm going to estimate you can grow ~1.5 ozs (you can do more as you learn more though). So you're looking at ~$40/oz after you've made the initial hardware investment.

I forget the exact equation for plants per foot but I think it was something like 35 draw watt of LED per squared foot and 1 plant per squared foot. in something like 2-3 gallon pots. Sea of green is best employed with shorter grow times in veg atleast to cut back from what I heard. whole idea is filling in a canopy with many small plants instead of a few big ones. lighting really depends on what your budget is, and what exactly you want to do, and where you live. In canada it can be hard to get ahold of QB and COB set ups but I'd still suggest them. Quantum board LED using samsung strips is really popular and so are cobs, you can get citizen, cree, or vero cobs. QB are the most efficient as far as light output but cobs can be very good too. I personally run cobs but I did not DIY. Which brings me to this. Are you going to DIY or buy a prebuilt fixture. DIY is always cheaper but you need some tools and basic electric knowledge. You can buy QB and cob fixtures that are plug and play but it'll cost you more. I run two CF grow 60W units they use cxb 3950 cree cobs and meanwell drivers, both very popular parts amongst DIY builds. They are pretty decent. I first bought a shitty 200W cob from amazon, it will grow full cycle but its canopy penetration is not nearly as good as cree cobs. It will however pull more true watts for cost.

DIY pricing is something like $50 per cxb 3590 cob and a driver that could run 4 of them at 50W each will prob be about $100 then you gotta DIY cut a aluminum frame to mount it on and have some kind of active or passive cooling. Need all the wires tools etc. plus the cost of your time working on it and putting it together, if you have built a computer you can probably figure it out. You can also build 'mostly assembled' kits


EDIT: get something in 3500k light temp so you can run them full cycle and do not need separate lights for veg/flower,

That's a lot of money for a fan. You could always get a cheaper fan that moves more cfm and simply get a fan silencer. You would still save money at that rate and spend the rest on an enclosed hood or cool tube to help with temperature control.

If you're going to be flowering in the tent, I would recommend lightproofing it, as well. You will want a fan or two of some kind to circulate air inside the tent. 6 Inch clip fans are popular. I use a pair of 4 inch clip fans and a tower fan.

Make sure to look into a DIY Ona Bucket for smells. During flower it will stink up your room when you open the tent. Just turn the Ona bucket on a little before that and you're good. If you're really paranoid about smell, you can also get an inline carbon scrubber. I remember when this used to be pages of people growing with tube light T4s for seedlings and CFLs for cheap grows.

Either way you need a budget. Let's say $175 for fun.

Go to a hardware store and get the cheapest 10 pack of LED bulbs. Get a power strip and some adapters to build one of these with those LED bulbs. You can fit 8 bulbs on a good power strip, save 2 bulbs for replacements if you want. That's 80W of LED from the wall for like $15-$20.

Get a tent. Here's a 2x2x4 for $38.. A tent will be easier than building anything, especially for the price.

With that small of a tent, you won't need a 6" fan, but if you think you'll get a big tent some day you may want to consider one. Get a 4" inline fan. Here's one on Amazon for $45, that comes with a speed controller to turn down (make quieter).

If you can't have your whole house smelling, you need a quality carbon filter. Here's an ok filter for $36 that will match your fan. It should last you a grow or 2.

You're at $139..

For the last $36 you need to consider your plant's pot, soil, nutes, and other small misc like rope or clothespins for plant training. It's not much, but you're shooting for cheap as possible. You can see where adding funds really can help this way. Hope it's helpful!

I have a 2x2 tent and a Can Fan S-400, which was what my hydro shop recommended when I was getting started. There are no doubt cheaper 4" fans on Amazon, but it seems very well made and has a 5 year warranty. I also have a Vivosun 4" fan, which I run freestanding with an extra carbon filter attached to scrub the air during harvest. It works, and isn't especially noisy, but feels very cheaply made.

I've heard people say that a 6" fan turned way down can quietly move a lot of air, but haven't tried it, and a 6" fan on full speed could suck in the tent walls too much or even tear them. (I get pretty strong negative pressure with my 4" fan on full!)

I haven't used any fans with an integrated speed controller, but the external fan speed controllers that actually reduce voltage are vastly superior to the cheap ones that just rapidly flip power on and off -- depending on the fan motor type, the latter can damage the motor or produce loud buzzing as you slow it down past a certain point. When I tried one with mine, anything below 80% or so started buzzing. The better controllers cost a bit more ($70 vs. $15), but since it's actual industrial equipment it should have good resale value.

My tent is in my home office and I don't find the noise problematic, if that helps.

For a 2x2 tent, it's probably more effective to control humidity in the surrounding room, rather than putting a dehumidifier in the tent.

Cooling and ventilation are all about the efficiency of your systems to vacate unwanted air while creating proper circulation. Couple things to consider before changing your setup:

  • Your room is 22ft^3. The fan you were looking at is rated at 430cfm (cubic feet per minute). Little less than 20x the volume of the room. Essentially, you will be creating dramatic negative pressure in your grow space. Might want to look at a smaller fan buying a fan speed controller. Max cfm rating should be somewhere around 4x the volume of your grow space. This will allow air to still be moved properly, while allowing the exhausting system to draw in fresh, cool air.

  • Your plants will acclimate themselves to whatever temperature you have them at. People say that ~24^o C is proper, but in nature temperature fluctuates dramatically, with more extreme temperatures than your plants will ever experience growing indoors.

    If you do decide to go the inline fan route, make sure you're using passive intakes for your cool air. You do not want to overpower/under-power your exhaust fan. Good way to burn out motors. Keep your 6" fan for circulation.


    EDIT: Forgot to mention cool tubes. If you're running a 400W system, look into (eventually) purchasing one of these. I recently purchased this set. Installed, I have noticed a huge decrease in ambient temperature in my tent. Here is my set up for a reference. If you were to do something like this, your light would have to be put in diagonally. Corner to corner, your room should measure ~3.5" across.

I understand being overwhelmed at first here, but I couldn't imagine trying to figure it out from a different language, so props to you! You can definitely build your own setup, or you could purchase a grow tent. The sizes range anywhere from 4x4x7' (or 4 feet by 4 feet wide and 7 feet tall), smaller, bigger, there's something out there for everyone. Some common lighting sizes with MH/HID (metal-halide/high intensity discharge, just different styles for different stages) bulbs are 400W, 600W, 1000W or so I've seen on here. You could also go with LED lights, but I don't know much about those. It depends on how many plants you'd like to grow and the size of your space.

As far as fans, I would get more powerful inline fans like this or this to actually move the air around if you're planning a bigger grow. If you're not too worried about a carbon filter, which it never hurts to be, maybe you could try making a DIY one with some supplies from your store and a guide from this sub?

Veg week 2 of clones obtained from my local medical collective. First nutrient feeding at half strength (3tsp/gallon of Fox Farm Big Bloom). LST started on all plants with the GDP starting 2 days later then the others. Did some minimal pruning after the LST settled to get things out of the dirt and clean out some leaves that weren't getting any light. Growth seemed to slow a bit for a few days, might have shocked them a bit from being rough with them, but they are doing great now. Thinking of extending my veg an extra week to compensate, will wait and see if that will even be necessary.

Noticed some small bite marks taken out of a leaf, so I decided not to take any chances and got some AzaMax and gave the girls a good shower at about 0.4% concentration. I will be following that up with a few more applications over the next couple weeks. I'm debating if I want to do a soil drench as well. I also got a gnat sticks that already caught one of the bastards.

Temps with lights on have remained stable around 79F and the RH about 40%. Lights off with fan at 20% temps get to 67F at the lowest and 50% RH at the highest. Also have some new goodies coming from Amazon in the next few days to improve my setup like an Oakton pH2 and rope hangers with metal internal gears instead of those cheapo plastic ones that came with my lights.

just want to chime in here, I was in the same boat as you. Starting out as just an experiment seeing if I could actually sprout a seed, turned into a dedicated project :p But I can tell you I didn't have any idea with like lights, tents, air filters etc. So first thing I bought was this LED , but a better option would be this Viparspectra (the one I bought though has been just fine) and just hung it in my closet with the plant, and that's it. veg'ed it for 4 weeks just like that with the light on a timer and my closet door closed. (get a little desk fan to to move some air over the leaves) Then I figured I'd switch to flower, and was kinda on the edge about investing in a tent and carbon filter. but every thread I read about smell, veterans would always say "It's gonna smell a lot!" So I bit the bullet and got a 2x2x4 tent and this carbon filter and fan . You can probably use your DIY carbon filter just fine. Anyway, long story short, I started to flower and literally two days later I walk into my house after work and the smell just hits me. And this is just one plant. So definitely invest in that stuff. But as for the PC fan, unfortunately it's not going to have enough static pressure to force air through a carbon filter. You don't have to go with the one I got, like brotha said the duct boosters will work too. First off, i'm simply recommending them, the stuff you got works but theyre a bit over priced so i'm going to recommend a few cheaper stuff.

You can get away with a 4'' fan/filter/duct with the grow space tent you provided. heres a recommended one.

Alright man thank you. I'm leaning towards the 400w HID light because it is cheaper than 2 LED's and I have read that it provides denser and more potent buds.. but I have a few questions/concerns that I hope you could clear up for me:

  • This is the setup I would plan on running. HID LIGHT

  • Would this light fit in my tent size with ample room to grow in. I wont be running huge plants but I plan on a SCROG as well as some fat buds. Could I do this without the possibility of burning my plants.

  • Would I be able to run this light without having crazy temps in my tent? I live in texas but the area I am growing in will have AC as well as a place to vent.

  • How would I go about cooling a light like this? I see that on the picture it has a place on either side of the light for ducting. How would you go about doing this? I already have an inline fan in my cart but what would you specifically do? Hook vents up to either sides of the light and exhaust out a window or something? Is there a video that demonstrates this or any photos you could share of your own setup?

I see you have 4" ducting but trust me you're definitely going to want to have this, thankfully 6" ducting isn't to expensive. Also buy these, so much easier than duct tape and these for managing the ducting. This and this too for supporting the inline fan and filter, the inline fan at full power will vibrate very slightly and I feel that the bungee cords help minimize vibration. I usually use zip ties for managing cords but also as a precautionary measure, I have a few loosely secured zip ties on my inline fans just in case a bungee cord were to become unsecured which that has never happened thankfully but you can never be to safe.

Okay 4 plants with good genetics can yield just as much weed as 6 plants with lesser genetics.

Never used a gorilla grow tent, but i went with the Vivosun (4'x2') for like $80 and am very impressed with it's quality for the price. Super happy with the purchase.

Edit: Looks like they make a 4x4 version for $120 - that's 2x the area for only 50% more than mine!

I think the 6 inch fan will be overkill since you already have low temps.

The light is a little small to flower with in that tent, but veg should be ok. I would get 2 for flower.

METER OR LIQUID. Ph strips suckk. I started giving my plants 8.2 PH water because the strip said it was 6.5ish.

I like soil, less finicky, but both work just fine.

I veg in a 2x2 tent and have 2 2x4 tents for flower. Seems to work pretty well, though I haven't gone through a whole cycle with this setup yet. I use a hlg 100 in the 2x2, and then hlg 100s and 1 hlg 300 in my flower tents (I also have a 150w hps and a "300w" viparspectra still hangin around too).

Indeed you can keep auto flowering plants small, but you can actually do that with any plant. Look up sea of green or screen of green methods to run small plants effectively. But can't stress this enough, I don't recommend autos, and if you're beginning with clones it's doubtful anyone has auto clones. Autos by nature are tough to clone, as the clones almost immediately begin to flower and don't have time to grow out as they would if they had been from seeds.

The tent method is great for beginners, but will run a bit more than $100. In total you would need a tent, LED light, inline fan, pots, soil, nutes, bamboo stalks, garden twine, PH testing kit, carbon filter, hanging clips, trimmers, drying rack, mason jars, and 62% boveda packs. If you search craigslist you can probably find a bunch of people selling their used gear. With a 2 x 4 tent you could yield 8 ounces or more, although it's more likely that you'll harvest 3-4 ounces your first go. A 4 x 4 tent would allow you lots of room and twice the yield.

Also in regards to LED's, be mindful of how many square feet you're trying to cover. I've got a few different LED's in my gardens, as well as MH/HPS lights. Many of the LED's claim to be full spectrum, and while that may be true, they vary quite a bit in terms of what they mean by that. I've got ones that are blueish white, blue, purple, more red, and one that has a switch from veg to flower. Out of all of them I really like my Mars Hydro , although I will say it does run very blue. Despite the dominantly blue spectrum, it's produced buds comparable to a 600w HPS, but with significantly more frost.

the ph pen i use is a bluelab although ive used an oakton both are good. You'll want calibration solution for it as well.

other gadgets? I like to use a paint stirrer on a portable drill to mix ferts. a couple of quality spray bottles and a pump sprayer is nice to have on hand.

Treat for common pests systemically don't wait for that oh shit moment. I treat all my young healthy plants (before they go into bud) with a combination of OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved products: Azamax (neem extract for mites),Serenade (powdery mildew and mold) and Monterey Garden Spray (leaf miners and budworms). I use each of these at least once each, often if you wait to treat until you notice problems, it's too late to get optimum results.

Here is how I do it. Tent on right gets first air ( the coldest and driest as it's for flowering ) air moves to second tent ( the air is warmer and more humid now, ideal for vegging flowers),the air moves into the dry tent,which usually has it's own dehumidifier. Finally exhausting thru a carbon filter back into the room.

if this is the same light or similar then you can read on the page that it actually only pulls 132 watts +- 10%

its a common mistake you shouldn't really worry about it, just know that most people recommend anywhere from 30-50 watts of actual true wattage per sqft of tent, and in your case you only have about just a little over 15.

Again only saying mars hydro 600w gives it a bit of leniency but the best 600w blurple led ive seen maxes out at like 180 watts which could work but you would probably see a massive improvement if you added some more light in there.

If your light isnt a blurple then i could be totally off.

All I can tell you is - follow the universal truth - You get what you pay for. Of course there are a few exceptions, I've found great quality products for cheap, but those gems are far and few between right?

That being said, you are on the right track. After reading reviews I ended up going with this filter and then I got this fan and so far they've been great. The speed controller is a nice touch. When it comes to carbon filters, they are mostly all the same in terms of design, so if you go with a cheaper brand to save 10 bucks I really don't think you'll be hurting yourself or your set up, but things like fans, mechanical devices, i wouldn't cheap out on.

/r/spacebuckets might be a better place to ask. You are really height-limited, and they know how to deal with that.

My $.02, get a 5g cloth pot, cut off the top half of it, and repot into that. Top by taking off the topmost node. If you aren't in a hurry, top anything that tries to grow above the top-most growth. When plant is about 12" tall, and you have multiple branches up at that height, install the trellis and get everything down as far as you can. Flip whenever the screen is 60% full, so you have room to tuck most of the stretchy growth that comes in weeks 1 - 3 of flower.

I'd also get an internal air circulation fan like this or this, and a fan speed controller for your main ventilation fan so it doesn't always have to be on 100% super loud full blast all day.

Are you growing in soil or hydro? Do you have your nutrients, soil or grow media, and pots or net buckets picked out already too?

Awesome to hear! Yeah I scoured the net too and tried a few designs before deciding on this one. It's just a simple PVC frame I hung from the top of the tent using adjustable light ropes.

Here's the materials with some example links and short instructions. I was sort of winging it at the time I built.... so let me know if you have any more questions and I can take some closer pictures of the screen or something. :)

| 1)) Measure out Length x Width you'll need for frame pieces. (accounting for the inch or two that gets added by the elbows when they're on) |
| 2)) Cut 4 pieces of pipe to desired length and fit them together using the 90 degree elbows. I used a rubber mallet to make sure they were seated all the way into the elbows. |
| 3)) Once the frame is assembled, you may have to twist it a little to make sure it's completely flat. My first attempt was a little tweaked by having an elbow rotated slightly. I just twisted the frame a bit to fix it and made sure it laid on the ground completely flat. |
| 4)) Grab a ruler and start marking out the spots where you'll drill for the screws. I start at the elbow and make a mark every 2". Continue this all the way around. You'll want to make sure the holes lineup perfectly even with the holes directly across. Just for a visual aid, If the screen is leaning up against a wall - you'll want to mark the top & bottom edges first, then the left and right sides. This way you make sure you don't accidentally end up with any angled or diagonal strings going across when it's done. ;) |
| 5)) Drill the pilot holes in the side of the pipe you marked previously. I drill all the way through the pipe wall and stop when it hits the opposite wall. |
| 6)) Screw in the truss-head screws about 75% of the way. Just enough to make them secure but also leave enough room to wrap the Mason's String around. |
| 7)) Once all the screws are in, I pick one corner as a starting spot and I tie up the string there and bring it across to the matching screw. From there it's just a time consuming game of rounding the screw next to it, bringing it across, rounding the next screw, bringing it back across, so on and so forth. Whatever weaving technique you want to use here is fine. |
| 8)) Hang the completed screen at the desired height by attaching the adjustable light rope hangers and you're good to go! I threw some zip ties around the elbows and clipped the rope hangers to those. |

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I was originally going to go on amazon and get a grow tent. My living situation changed since then which is why it took me a few months to get to this point. I now need a smaller solution which is why I thought about building the grow box. I looked for pre-built ones but anything half-decent is $500+ which is unacceptable for me at the moment.

Regarding the nutrients, I found plenty of "weed specialized" nutrients on the internet, but they are incredibly expensive to ship here and it's just more fluff. I read the same about the "time released" nutrients being no good, I will try to see if I can find that Fox starting soil everyone says is so great at ACE Hardware, and then see if they have non-time delayed nutrients like Dyna-Grow, but I doubt it.

I wrote down what you said about the pot sizes, this is what I've done least amount of research on, will try to get at least 4 plastic 10+ inch pots in the box. I really only want 4 plants max in this, so the biggest 4 pots I can squeeze in there will do.

Regarding the inline fan, I responded to /u/Cuicos above and I think I will get this inline fan instead:

My tentative setup right now has a two gallon reservoir watering a three gallon Smart Pot. I have a 5-10 gal fish tank filter that I've also added an [activated carbon/ammonia neutralizing crystal] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002566YM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) filter and leveled filter to. I let my water set at room temperature (cycling through the filter) for several days before giving it to the plant. The water is exposed to 388 watts (~84,000lm) of warm and cool white LEDs in a Carbon Dioxide rich environment with filtered airflow.

My city water report is as follows, with ideal levels, followed by current city water levels:

  • Haloacetic Acids (HAA5)(ppb): <60, 25.1
  • Bromate (ppb): <10, 1.8
  • Total Organic Carbon (% Removal): TT, 52.57
  • Barium (ppm): <2, 0.3

    I presume the Haloacetic Acids are the chlorine they use in the water treatment.

    The Questions:

  • My hope is that the Chlorine will evaporate off over a few days, and that the filters I have will grab onto other problematic elements. Is this reasonable to assume?
  • Should I add anything to my water (pH balance, nutrients, things to help filter contaminants)?
  • How will temperature of water affect my plants? Should I try to cool or warm it before being added to the grow?
  • Does light have any effect on water (or microbial life in the water)? Is it just UV, or can wide spectrum or white lights also have an effect?

You'll likely need to move more CFM than the fan you linked.

Just from a quick search of Amazon Canada, I'd go with THIS FAN, and THIS CONTROLLER.

I don't see any legit filters on Amazon Canada... or they are super-expensive. I definitely recommend getting a name-brand filter... that's not somewhere you want to cut costs (IMO). I'd try to find a hydro shop near you and see what they've got. Phresh and CAN are good ones... I know there are others.

You just need to make sure the filter is rated to handle at least as many CFM as the fan. The fan I linked is 400CFM... most (if not all) 6" filters will match up fine.

So I recently added this fan & filter combo, which I must say was MUCH larger than I had anticipated, and has had an immediate effect on my RH. I went from about 35% to around 16% in a couple hours. Shortly after, my flowering plants are showing twisted and drooping leaves. Can this be the cause?

The Aussie Blues is 90% Sativa and already had drooping leaves closest to the flower, but no twisting. Note that the plant looks healthy otherwise, all the leaves have a nice even color and are perky. Do certain strains look like this when flowering?

Also it is growing a lot of popcorn, should I trim this off before it develops more?

I'd have to agree with Justin here, I own that light and reflector and I absolutely LOVE it so far, but my tent is over twice that size (36x48x72), and it fills the space quite well. the 400w should suit your needs well without all the heat of the 600w. My tent sits at 70F-78F with the veg bulb, the flower bulb that comes with this puts out almost double the lumens and presumably a TON more heat.

Edit: Amazon carries a 400w version of that light for $26 cheaper, if you want to go with the same type kit. Has good reviews and a 5 star rating.

that's a duct booster. it won't have the power to properly exhaust your tent, especially if you're using that filter. i would look at something more like this. i can't vouch for that fan, but it will be a lot better than the booster.
in terms of pushing or pulling, i've been told it's better to pull through the filter than to push, idk, maybe something to do with how long the carbon will stay effective. i personally have my tent setup to push through mine right now, as the fan is a lot smaller than the filter so i elected to put the filter outside. either works tbh.

This is my setup, my fan is coming in today and my seedlings sprouted this morning. I did quite a bit of research and The light is a little underpowered but I was on a pretty tight budget and can always add more light later.
I spent $40 on seeds and super soil mix from Mephisto genetics, going a more organic route and won't require nutes.
I also spent about $30 on peat moss, perlite, and compost. I already had some ducting and pots.

As long as you don't get lazy and start cutting corners, or experimenting too much before you're ready, you'll see steady improvement.

IMO, stick to the directions and LST for a couple grows until you've got it down to where you really aren't having to look up each step and you aren't making any little mistakes causing the plants stress. Then try some HST like Super Cropping to increase your yield even more.

If you plan on continuing to grow, my best advice is to invest in a good pH meter like this one. and measure the pH of your runoff so you know if your soil pH is drifting and compensate on your next watering by going up or down by .2 or so. Keep it between 6.3 and 6.8. Beware of cheap pH meters, they need to be recalibrated constantly to be even remotely reliable.

Plants don't redistribute light equally to each other as if they were pirates sharing that sweet booty. The wattage needs are based per sq. foot not per plant. Unless you are growing 5 1x1 bamboo trees then you have to either scale down your plant number or scale up your grow space. I think you could do decent with a T5 light with 4 bulbs like this one :

I have one of those now and a big boy version of it. Your tent could get away with this and the clip fan.


Most new growers are terrified to cut their plants. It can, most of the time, be beneficial. The plant has a natural response to any type of mutilation that causes it to heal and grow slightly stronger.

I have that Variac and vortex combo and love it; look for the amazon used section I pick it up for 110 instead. I have this fan and it works wonderful for a 2 x 4 tent PACKED TO THE FUCKING BRIM with plants. Tis cheaper. Edit: it's the one you linked... woops!

I'm just tossing it out there that you can pay with amazon prime card on rapid LED and get this vastly superior light I was told of tonight. I used the prime credit card to get LEDs there. ;)

This is the filter I was gonna buy for flowering. What do you think? I know its probably not the best but its affordable plus delivery to my country :) I hope it will be enough for a very small grow room for 1 or max 2 plants at a time. How does it work really? Do I just put it top of the room and leave it there so as to "circulate" and purify the air inside the grow room?

Do you think a similar fan to this would be enough or shall I buy 2 of them just in case? (I will buy a 250W HPS light so that would make up a bit of heat)

You might want a fan speed controller, unless you just want to always run it full blast.

Ratchet rope hanger can be helpful for adjusting light height. Also something to hang your fan... I went with paracord since I already had a bunch.

Smart/fabric pots are a popular option.

Some sort of fan(s), the small clip on ones are popular, can also go for the standing oscillating ones or a small one like this

A tent that small will limit you, I'd spring for a slightly larger one unless you really have space constraints.

HPS is meant for flowering (I see the one you linked come with both bulbs, but you specifically mentioned HPS). I mean, yeah, you can use it for veg, but it won't work as well as a bluer color temperature (the MH bulb in your link is the right temp, I wrote this before I clicked it and you only mentioned HPS). Personally, I use T5s for vegging (they look similar to what you're using but are much more powerful), but some people like to use MH lights. I use t5 because it's adequate but also uses less power than most MH light and T5 is so cool you can get them within inches of your plants. Plus, I'm not trying to rush my veg plants, I've always got a full flower room anyway. MH gets pretty hot.

Hello there, I recently started growing and purchased all new items. The fan you chose simply won't work. You will be very disappointed in the performance. I was going to use that fan as an inflow booster with a pre-filter. I quickly returned it because it just did not move enough air. The fan could not create positive pressure in the tent. I should probably clarify. On a smaller box/project, with about 200-300cfm of total exhaust, I hit heat problems with over the counter CFL's. Granted I had a lot of them, but I still had to reduce my lighting and watch the temps like a hawk. The hydrofarm fixture is at my local grow store. I can touch the reflector and not burn myself, I estimate it to have a surface temp of say 100-120F. How would that compare to a 150watt HPS?

My friend has used both 600 and 1000watt hps, the 600 alone puts out insane, heat; too hot to touch the reflector assemble bare handed, and the lens/glass has burned people in the past. Granted he could have used a cool tube, but he was low on cash and time.

If it's heat you're worried about, CFL's will actually put out more heat than HID, if you use the same wattage. It seems counter intuitive, but because CFL's have a larger surface area they seem cooler. Sure, they aren't has hot to the touch, but they will warm your grow room up more overall.

If you have the full height of the closet at your disposal, then you could go up to a 600 watt fixture but a 400 watt would also be sufficient. It would require a cool tube or air cooled hood, and a good inline fan with a place to exhaust to.

It's a pretty expensive startup, but if you do things right, you'll make your money back in the first harvest alone.

This is a T5 High Output. It is a fluorescent grow light. I see a lot of people say it creates loose buds, but I have also seen journals where people grow nice dense buds with them. Especially when using a training method. This is my first grow so I thought I would experiment with these first. I am very happy with them for veg so far.

I have a 1000w and this is what I have gotten to after many hours of pain and grief:

  • Have the bottom vents open on the left and right side
  • Have one fan for light going fast
  • Have one fan for the carbon filter going slower
  • Insulated ducting on the lights for heat and sound (on carbon filter for sound)
  • To mix the air properly I have an expensive fancy floor fan in the corner shooting air straight up. Think of how a ceiling fan works better than a box fan in a room. I am replacing this fan with 1 or 2 cheap light-weight fans that I will hang front left and right. The fans will hang just above the canopy high enough not to affect the light footprint.
  • Having the fans shoot up means I don't have the fans directly blasting air onto the canopy and the air goes through the canopy to the floor. This works much better than blowing directly on the canopy and having a supplemental fan under the canopy when the tent is full.
  • For heat I have gotten a Heat Bud Personal Heater and an Inkbird controller for when the tent goes below 65.

If your grow is set up somewhat permanently, I’d go with the Bluelab guardian. Forget ph’ing every again

DIY are superior, as you can get the exact nm frequencies you like, but if you aren't handy with electronics you can run the risk of fire or simply blowing money on a dud product. You can get 600w leds for 150 now on amazon, and they work really well.

So I've put two Mars hydro 600 watt lights in a 2x4x5 tent and if I left it sealed up it will get too hot of course. In that tent I can get away with a 240cfm duct fan at the top vent hole of the tent and be in the 80s. I still have to leave the tents flap open or it gets too hot even with one clip fan and a large standing fan aimed at the tent door. This is in a cool basement and it's not even summer yet. I'm actually in the market for a couple of 300-400 CFL inline fans that are somewhat quiet if anyone knows of any. Looking at this one

Looking at the description of that filter I'd say its probably not going to scrub smell well. From what I've read when buying a carbon filter (more experienced people please advise) you want to look for "Australian activated charcoal" and something like "1050+ RC". Here's the link to the filter I got. Also just a heads up your light isn't actually 600 true watts, its 240W true watts which you should use as your measurement.

I have never used those big cfl's but you can do great things with them. You can buy a bunch of the 42 watt cfls that = 150 watts. Those work great. But can be a pain setting them all up. Thank you, there aren't many post here with people that have used MC so it's great to get some recent info. I will flush them tonight and give them only pHd water for one feeding and then go to 0.75x of MC and a lesser frequency for Recharge. I also decided to finally splurge a little bit on a Bluelabs pH meter and hopefully not have it break on me like the cheap one I first got; it just arrived, actually.

You can keep the light that far away from the plants throughout. You can also play with the height. Get those ratchet light hangers. They are adjustable. Like These

The 300w does not really cover much space. For reference in my tent I am growing 2 plants right now. I used only the 300w for veg and just let them veg longer to make up for the lack of light. No problems for me there. As for flower you'd want more than one if you are doing more than one plant. In my tent, as I said, I have two going right now. I have a 250w HPS that's over one plant and the 300w is over the other.

To summarize, the 300w will be perfect for one plant throughout the entire veg/flower cycle. The 300w will be adequate to veg 2 plants but not enough to flower. Maybe with your cfls and the new ones you are adding plus the 300w you should be good for 2 plants.

I have a similarly sized tent and I use this fan with this speed controller. It seems to provide very good suction and the controller does not cause the fan to hum or anything. I estimate 10+ full air cycles per minute with this thing going at full blast. I'm running a Mars 600 and a home built 240W COB setup to supplement, pulls about 500W at the wall and my tent is at about 75 F with 60% humidity. Intake air is about 62 F right now.

I would always go 6 inch, simply because that gives you the option to run the fan at 50% power and still get more CFM than you would with a 4 inch.

One thing to consider is the cost of carbon filters if you're worried about smell. My neighbors don't care so I vent outside, but a 6 inch carbon filter will cost at least $50 more than the 4 inch equivalent. Granted they can move more air and will last longer, but still certainly something to consider.

Info: Samsquanch auto from Mephesto 5 gal smart pot with ocean forest. Popped on New Year’s Day. Last two watering have been ph’d water at 6.8 exactly. Previous watering before that included less than a quarter strength of fox farms big bloom and a 1/4tsp of calmag that is 2-0-0 all ph’d at 6.8 with ph down.

For water I’ve been using both purchased gallons of spring water or tap water which is fairly alkaline at 8.0ph. Usually takes over 15 drops of ph down in a gallon of water to adjust. Does that sound about right? Worried the ph down is affecting the plant.

The top of the plant is showing a different deficiency, which from what I can tell is possibly manganese (the random brown splotches on newer leaves). The lower leaves were browning from the edges, but that has since stopped.

Edit: this is my cob led from amazon. light Says 800 Watts, but I don’t believe it’s even 300 true watts. There is also a 180 watt ufo led in there but not directly over the plant. UFO Light

I'd suggest going with a different light setup but otherwise the other stuff looks good.

The light you picked will create a lot of heat and use a lot of power. The LED is lower power, lower temperature, and will give you more PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) for the money.

Its as simple as dip a piece of the strip in the water and compare the color it turns to the little chart. (Under white light) its not instant or as dead accurate as a good meter but its still not hard by any means.

Hi, I would appreciate some critical feedback and suggestions regarding the setup I have in mind for a new grow tent, specifically related to ventilation. So far I have concluded that a 3'x1.7'x5' grow tent is the right size for my space (a spare bathroom), and towards that end I have purchased this tent and a 400W cool tube lamp.

For ventilation, what I am envisioning based on my research is a two fan setup: a 6" inline duct fan to cool the lamp (like this one) and a 4" inline duct fan with a carbon scrubber to exhaust the tent (like this one), presumably with speed controllers for each.

Again, this is going in a bathroom where I plan to hijack the existing ceiling exhaust ducting that leads outdoors. Thus I will need to couple the two fans from the lamp and the tent exhaust and plumb it into the ceiling.

Does this seem reasonable and appropriate? I am having a hard time picturing exactly how the carbon filter works - can I put it inline with ducting as I have drawn, or does the business end of the filter go inside the tent?

The number that you are looking for is the ppfd. This is the photosynthetic photon flux density. It is the measurement of PAR at the canopy and is measured in micromoles per second per meter squared.

> IIRC really good HIDs like Gavita DE HPS or CMH are around 1.7 - 1.8 micromoles per joule and COBs are 1.8-2.2, and quantum board type setups are 2.5+. Shit tier LEDs from amazon (mars hydro , vivaspectra) are like 1.0 or less.

In your example your spending $140 on 10 year old LED tech and getting 264W at the wall which doesn't even come close to the 40 - 50W per SF rule most people use. This $120 400W HPS will crush those Mars lights in yield and quality. This is why I say don't use LEDs unless your ready to spread that wallet wide.

Things to think about later are drying racks, jars, and trimming scissors.

An intake fan will double as an outtake fan depending on the way you face it. You can use two intake fans and use one of them to suck the hot air inside the top of the tent and blow it out of the tent with another fan to pull air from outside and blow it into your tent or you can do it how I do it.

Most tents have velcro flaps that pull up with mesh screens on them to act as air vents. If you have your tent near a wall I open the flap close to the wall that way it is shaded so I don’t have worry about light leaking through it. Then I use one intake fan inside my tent and I duct it out of the tent and out my window. All other intakes are sealed but one or two air vents that are shaded from light.

This creates a negative pressure in your tent. The hot air has no where else to go but through your fan and out of the tent and then the air from the room your tent is in is being drawn in from your passive air vent.

Almost all tents have these vents located in multiple spots for this. Ideally you will only need to buy one fan for your tent.

How many of your side vents are open? Do you have any fans inside your tent moving air around? I have a 4 in PVC pipe that is inserted into one of the 4 inch opening in my 3x3, to allow unrestricted air into my tent.

For 25 dollars, you could buy one of these, and have it pull fresh air in.

I just posted a few pics of my second grow. I use a 440 CFM carbon fiber scrubber. The physical carbon scrubber is mounted inside at the top of the tent. I'm running 6 inch duct which is a bit extreme because my tent is 2x4x5. So, the scrubber is mounted, with a six inch duct from there, leading into my air cooled hood. Another six inch duct runs out of the hood and up towards the ceiling of the tent where it goes into the intake fan and led away from the tent.

Before I had an air cooled hood and carbon fiber scrubber (my first grow), I was constantly battling heat issues with a 400w light. I had two six inch inline fans, one bringing in fresh air and one pulling hot air from the top. Then I had two cooling fans inside the tent to move the air around the tent. It was crowded with four plants that stretched because I didn't have a proper cooling system. Average temps where mid, to high, 80s (26°+ c). In the end I made out okay with no problems 5.2oz with no stress training.

Here's my scrubber It's huge, but I don't need any other fans except the two blowing on my girls to strengthen their stems and roots. Just a thought.
