YEp it's pretty bad at about $35 if you don't need tracking (First class which is the cheapest method) I traded one to someone in Australia and was able to drop the shipping price to $23.50 by removing the AC power cable and HDMI cable ( we both just kept the ones that came with our units - I did send the AC adapter since the AU version did not come with one and the US one did) - and then watching how much packaging material was used and cutting 2 of the 4 flaps off the box on top and bottom and taping it shut) -- The USPS charges $23.50 for up to 2 Lbs. and then 2Lbs. 1 oz. goes up to $35 - and the US unit as it comes weigh a couple ounces over 2 Lbs. but removing the 2 cables gets it under 2 lbs. enough to allow it to be put in a box wrapped in bubble wrap.
IF you don't mind modding it - the easiest way would be to get the JP version from Amazon Japan for $85 shipped ( you have to change the site language to english and sign up for an account but it isn't too bad ) and it usually takes less than a week to arrive ) - https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B075MK6THW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AN1VRQENFRJN5&psc=1
OR if you don't want to sign up for an account there Amazon US has them for $91 ( https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Super-Famicom-Classic-Console-Japanese/dp/B075MK6THW/ref=sr_1_5?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1519695872&sr=1-5&keywords=snes+mini)
Then either sell the US one or Return it and then mod the Japanese version to English or set it up as a dual boot with both the Japanese set of games and the US set. ( OR keep both ! )
I got a bit carried away and wound up with one of each version - https://s26.postimg.org/74o3571vb/collection.jpg
The wii classic and Wii Classic pro both work very well. The club Nintendo promotional super Famicom controller should work too.
Sky Blue Hori Classic Wired Turbo Controller for Nintendo Gamecube and Wii https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001JEODG8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WvPZzbG6AXZ02
This controller above works very well and the turbo buttons work flawlessly.
I just bought some generic wii pro controllers from amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XH1FV3A/
They are no longer available, but I have loved the controllers, I rarely use the regular ones anymore. I am sure you can find similar ones.
I had contemplated this very issue a few weeks ago. I have all the classics and a few other consoles in the kid's room. I ended up getting the Monoprice 8X1 Enhanced Powered HDMI Switcher w/ Remote. No usb ports, I have all the consoles plugged into the 12 port Amazon basics surge protector. Only gripe is the LEDs are pretty bright. I also went with this model because it had buttons on the front of it to select input. Made it easier for the kids to use.

This one works perfectly for me for both my NESC and SNESC: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZMV7RL2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It is a powered adapter...not sure if the other one you had is...
Like all my consoles, I play them but I keep the boxes intact. Due to the rarity of SNES classic, I am buying one of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071RVYF8M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6-WOzbGBGA6Z8
Well, it's the follow-up to this book from last year, the reviews of which aren't exactly flattering. Sounds like a rather mediocre cash-in.
You're going to need an HDCP compliant powered converter if you want to go from HDMI to VGA. Something like the following:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003O55U8K
OR
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XDNJ6RM/
I got mine from Amazon Japan.
It ships internationally however you will need to create a separate account for Amazon Japan.
I actually found the item on Amazon, from when I ordered them:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2K0C8M/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The connector it uses means it can work on NES/SNES classic too! (well not that you need more controllers for the snes classic)
No problem. Prime Now is a same day, 2-hour delivery service for Amazon Prime members. You can downlad the app for free
It worked pretty well for me last year. Amazon Games did Twitter notifications when they were available in each region.
I don't work for Amazon, but at this point they probably should hire me.
I recommend getting one of these (says NES Classic but should work with the SNES Classic since it uses the same controller port), and one of these.
(Bonus: The controller also works with PC and Switch)
Not only are many people planning to keep their Classic consoles boxed, but at least a few are planning to keep their box inside a box.
Buy [this](HDMI Audio Extractor Splitter, One HDMI Input to HDMI Output + Optical SPDIF and RCA L/R Audio Out https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I9JG70A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_DKLZzb7M8448H).
I personally do not know if this work but technically it should. Might need another hdmi cable if you don't have one to go from the converter box to your monitor.
Then buy [this](C&E 30S1-01260 2 x RCA Male, 1 x 3.5mm Stereo Female, Y-Cable 6-Inch Gold Plated Connector https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I23TTE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5MLZzbS8E0JJG). Then you should be able to plug in your headset.
There was a user on here who hooked up a mini LCD 4:3 display to the SNES.
u/Restart_Point was the name I believe

This is the one i purchased
[SMAKN® 90 Degree Left Angled Micro USB 2.0 OTG Host Adapter with USB Power for Galaxy S3 S4 S5 Note2 Note3 Cell Phone & Tablet] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VT0PZ8C?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf)
With a 16gb compact flash drive and haven't had an issue yet.
Is it this one?
https://www.amazon.com/Kinivo-501BN-5-Port-Wireless-Adapter/dp/B0049SCB2Y/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=kinivo+hdmi+switch&link_code=qs&qid=1568653868&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A6909317011&rnid=6909315011&s=audio-video-accessories&sourceid=Mozilla-search&sr=1-1
It says it switches inputs automatically. Can you verify that works with turning the minis on/off?
They actually started with Game and Watch classics a few years ago.
(holy heck, that ways apparently 1998)
If that's a real concern, I can't recommended this enough: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0049SCB2Y
I'm worried that the battery compartment on the back will make the controller uncomfortable to hold. The shifted buttons might also feel weird to someone used to the standard controller. A wireless version of this would be perfect.
Anyone know if this one is decent? I want something to pull the audio to my receiver which has no HDMI

The PI isn't much cheaper than a retail-priced classic...
Total: $69.13
But there is the fact that the games wouldn't exactly be legal...
Of course, you could go all out and get a broken SNES for the case, wire up the actual controller ports, and even make it read genuine cartridges, that could end up costing quite a bit more though, although, making the pi dump real carts would make it more-less legal.
In the end, you're cutting corners or not giving users a non-techie-friendly experience...
Most people would expect a power switch and a reset button (to "reset" the pi to the main screen)...
When you start adding things like a shutdown circuit, the cost starts to exceed the classic...
Yes, I know there's a shutdown option in RetroPie, I know you don't need the circuit, but it makes it more user-friendly.
