I started writing Pokémon fanfics back when I was in junior high. Now I'm 26, I'm a produced playwright with some awards under my belt, and I'm doing a second draft of my first novel.

The way you start writing is two fold.

  1. Write a lot. Every day. Maybe it's ten minutes to start. Maybe you start with journaling. Just spitballing about characters, plots, whatever. That will evolve into writing actual content.

  2. You need to read a lot. A lot. What do you like to read? When I was in college, I read everything from Shakespeare to Stephen King. Find an author your like. Mimic their style at first. It will evolve into your own quickly.

Two books you need to read:

    "The Elements of Style"
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005IT0V8O?ie=UTF8&redirectFromSS=1&pc_redir=T1&noEncodingTag=1&fp=1

    Free on kindle.

Next is Stephen King's "On Writing." You can find that one somewhere. That book inspired me and gave me a good writer's toolbox. I still go back to both of them.

Last piece of advice. Write for you. Write things that you like. At first, it won't matter what other people think because they won't be reading it. Only share stuff when you feel like getting your story broken. The good part about a broken story is that you can always fix it, but it's painful. Writing is 90% rewriting. It's what makes it feel like work.

But writing is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. It got me through a lot of tough times. It still does. I would be happy to help you in any way I can. Feel free to message me privately (I'll figure out how this works on mobile).

The world needs more writers because writers are adventurers.

You could buy him a tin or two like these

Or be super awesome and buy him something like this but this box is really only worth it if he actually plays the TCG. If he just collects the cards, stick with these- booster packs.

And every kid needs a binder to put their cards in!

If your son does not know how to play the card game but would like to learn how to you could get him this.

Or you could be the best mom ever and get him a 2ds, 3ds or 3ds XL and a copy of pokemon X or Y!

u/mrogersj5 · 2 pointsr/pokemon

I'd suggest asking him to write down some of his favorite pokemon. Each game as a different selection of critters, including the starter pokemon (who are usually big favorites) and the rare, powerful legendary pokemon (usually the critter on the box).

As far as which game to choose, it is hard to go wrong with classic pokemon games. X and Y are about a year old but are good quality games. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire came out two days ago (they're remakes of the third pokemon games from 2003) and are also high quality.

My real suggestion would be this - figure out if your son is a kid who will spend tons of time invested in the game. If they are, get them a game for Christmas and a handbook like this. I am a teacher and I have a fifth of my class who love to look up, share, and draw with these books.

>By that logic, they should just suspend trading then. Ruins their bottom line. Force people to get all the games if they want all the Pokemon.

The whole trading between two versions thing started in order to boost their sales and improve popularity. Parents will likely only buy one version for their kids so then the kid will convince their friend to buy a copy too, and suddenly Nintendo has two sales instead of one.

>And it's funny you mention delaying migration while you're also someone who talked about not getting B2W2 and delayed getting it until an event.

Why is this funny to you? I bought B2W2 soon after release and not used from a bargain bin because of an event, which you claimed is something that gamefreak does despite not making them any money. Clearly they got an extra sale despite the content not being of as much interest to me. The content of ORAS does interest me greatly however, so I am willing to pay the premium of being an early adopter this time around. You are seeing contradictions where none exist.

>Additionally, having an updated XY incentivizes people who may have missed out on XY to get it along with ORAS if they didn't get it. Now, on the market, you have the clearly superior ORAS and the clearly inferior XY. You're not going to sell both of those. If you update XY, you have 2 equals on the market. ORAS and XY are both still $40. If both are $40, and both are equal, people are more likely gonna get maybe both. If both are $40 and XY is inferior? Less people gonna buy that and just get ORAS.

XY usually retails for around $35 now, and will likely drop to around $30 when the new games release. Even if it doesn't drop, the supposedly "inferior" version is still selling for less.

>And, think about it longterm. Why would people buy ORAS now? Makes more sense to wait for Z or X2Y2, where it'll have all of the XY Megas, all the ORAS megas, AND any new megas exclusive to Z or X2Y2. If GameFreak wants to go for a "we're not updating old games within a generation," gives people more reason to just wait for the final game in a generation.

There are certainly people who already do that. However, most of us are early adopters for each new generation, and early adopters have always had to pay a premium, regardless of what type of product they are buying. The same applies to renewable energy, computer architectures, electric cars, and so forth.

>No, who this affects is people who for one reason or another want their Pokemon in XY. Maybe they dislike Hoenn. Maybe they want to do Kalos content with specific Pokemon. Maybe they consider XY the main game and ORAS a side game. You think all the people giving feedback about the lack of a patch are all people who DON'T plan on getting ORAS?

Point taken. However this does not change the fact that gamefreak has clearly moved on from XY. GF is in no way a large company. Developing a patch of this scale would pull many programmers away from working on the next game which is without a doubt being developed already, costing them money and delaying next years release. Programming is not as simple as copying and pasting code. It takes a lot of effort to get things to play nice with each other.

>That's the stupidest excuse ever. You don't like the way something's done, you give feedback. You know what what's better than not supporting a business? GETTING THAT BUSINESS TO IMPROVE. The whole "leave if you don't like how it's being done" is such horseshit. Are you fine with the lack of a patch? Do you think it's better than having a patch? Because it seems like you are. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater is so stupid.

No, it's not a terrible idea. Have you heard of boycotting? Boycotting is often used as a form of consumer activism. Plenty of people are boycotting ubisoft for releasing broken PC ports, just as plenty of people boycotted EA before they started getting their shit together with digital distribution. If you don't like how a company treats it's customers, limit your patronage towards them. GF is at the end of the day a company. They won't see the incentive for urgent change if you keep giving them money regardless of what they do.

>You know what else hurts the bottom line? Giving off the vibe that all your products will be obsolesced in a year. "Why buy XY? Now, not only does Z have the normal 3rd version improvements, it's ALSO going to have 20+ exclusive megas compared to the 1 or 2 exclusive legendary forms."

CoD seems to do pretty well using this exact formula and it doesn't appear to hurt their sales too much. I don't care much for CoD myself, but I can see that their business model is making them money. Also see my previous point about early adoption.

>How many of those phones didn't receive updates? The majority got slow updates and a single one. XY is getting NO updates. If they give it an update in the feature, then that's fine. People may be miffed that it's late, but it's an update. We're not getting any.

Mid 2012 was the when companies really started including updates with the majority of their lineups. It was roughly around when 4.0 ice cream sandwich was released to the public. Updates were still slow, but at least it was there. The article was written because that was new at the time. It essentially says "hey look, companies are updating phones across the board now instead of just for their flagship, but there is still a lot of room for improvement." Before that, there was really no precedent for this. When I bought an HTC Inspire 4G, it was because it was one of the few year old phones on the market that would be getting an update to 2.3 gingerbread, and I was too poor to buy a brand new newly released phone at the time. At that time, updates were a blessing, not something to be expected.

I try to read "enough" ahead so that I can plan out my game session for a day or so. That way I can plan to talk to guy X in Pokemon Center for item Y, catch Pokemon ABC in the routes, purchase some items from the shop at Town Z, and then when I'm ready I can go to the next gym with the guide as a reference. It's a field guide to me more than anything else :) Occasionally, I'll spend my day just catching one Pokemon for the right Nature/Ability or doing a Berry Run, so those days I'll take a peek at the Pokedex to plan out what I want that Pokemon to be.

They do still release the Paperback guides, but they're much thicker now with OR/AS. After Black/White (I think), they separated out the Pokedex and the Guide too, so it's a little unwieldy. I would be pretty surprised if they didn't publish guides for SuMo. If/Once they do, you should pick them up soon, because they get marked up pretty quickly.

Here's a link to the OR/AS National Pokedex. I'm in North America, but the UK publication is the only one at a reasonable price: http://smile.amazon.com/Pokemon-Omega-Ruby-Alpha-Sapphire/dp/1908172711

DO NOT use clear nail polish, it will just ruin the surface of the DS. Rather than that, just get a crystel DS case where your DS stays protected, and looks good and clean! ;)

Here is a link!

EDIT: And yes, I do own this case and it has kept my 3DS in perfect condition for about a year now!

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/pokemon

I had this one and this one

I honestly can't believe how much that first one is worth now o.O wish I would have taken better care of mine.

u/Quazifuji · 3 pointsr/pokemon

Yep. Gamestop has a lot of sucky business practices, but I don't think this is one of them. They're selling the games for the price people will pay. You can get it cheaper on Amazon, but that would require buying it from random sellers you've probably never heard of.

Some games become dirt cheap when they get old, others become collector's items and don't. Not really surprising that an old Pokemon game is in the latter category, given both the popularity of the game and that there's still motivation to buy it (I don't think you're the only one trying to pick it up to help complete the Pokedex).

u/ALpanda · 1 pointr/pokemon

easily my favorite manga series! you're gonna have so much fun!

be forewarned, the pokemon Diamond and Pearl adventures

http://www.amazon.com/Pok%C3%A9mon-Diamond-Adventure-Pokemon-Paperback/dp/1421542412

is NOT part of this series. i was not aware and bought the box. it's cool but unrelated.

u/dogzilla1029 · 5 pointsr/pokemon

https://www.amazon.com/Pokemon-Kalos-Region-Handbook-Scholastic/dp/0545646022/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=pokemon+handbook&qid=1573852603&sr=8-4

if reading (and bonding) is your goal, you can buy a "Pokemon Handbook" (basically a encyclopedia of pokemon, with their pictures and descriptions! I linked one). there are way more pokemon now than when i was a kid but as a kid i absolutely adored my copy, and read through it countless times. Most are sorted by "Region" of pokemon. An idea is that you can read it together, act out the moves, and go out to hunt for the pokemom cards of his favorites. Honestly as a kid I was vastly disapointed with the card game, as it had aso many rules, and what I really wanted to do was yknow, pretend to shoot fire and stuff.

u/treacledormouse · 3 pointsr/pokemon

Yes get one of the 'Pokémon Handbooks' (probably this)

Or this when it comes out, although it's more of a strategy guide.

Or you could just play around on the Pokédex section of the Pokémon website.

u/dopplegengar · 1 pointr/pokemon

I use an [action replay] (http://www.amazon.com/Datel-Action-Replay-System-DS-Nintendo/dp/B005LUUWL6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1404927169&sr=8-2&keywords=action+replay). It was a little trouble to track down the right version of the program to manage the cheats because their site is terrible, but I can give you that. Also you have to manually install the driver but it isn't as much trouble as it sounds and once you get the program installed it works perfectly. I've heard of R4 but I don't know anything about that.

u/swarnpert · 1 pointr/pokemon

As WillExis said, the GameShark of the DS is called Action Replay. This is the one I bought after my first one broke, which I still have and it works well enough. The company kind of sucks at making things fit perfectly in the DS, so it wobbles a bit, and the UI can be annoying, but it will do everything you need it to. I always got my AR codes off of Super Cheats ages ago, but you should be able to find whatever you want with a Google Search.

Also, if you do hack Pokemon, be careful of where you trade them (if you transfer them to gen VI/VII) because on some subreddits they're not allowed to be traded.

u/Bendiez · 1 pointr/pokemon

You'll need a DS AC. Not a Powersave, Powersave is compatible with newer Pokemon games.

I have this one or a very similar one

https://www.amazon.com/Action-Replay-DSi-Nintendo-DS/dp/B002N73PEQ

They are pretty expensive. I remember paying 25$ When it came out. Wouldn't bother purchasing one just to trigger a Darkrai event.

u/Edward_Thunder · 1 pointr/pokemon

Order it from amazon and then pray that they can ship it to you http://www.amazon.com/Pok%C3%A9mon-Diamond-Pearl-Adventure-Box/dp/1421542412

Other than that you can read it on mangahere http://www.mangahere.com/manga/pok_mon_dp/

(Warning: they do not have all of the volumes and I have yet to find a website that hosts all 8 volumes of the manga)

u/clouddweller · 1 pointr/pokemon

Does anyone know the difference in the Pokedex Guides offered through Amazon.com? The prices are different and so are the covers, I just want to make sure I get the right one. I do like the price and cover of the other pokedex, but I'm not sure if it is a legit guide.

u/ShinyRaticate · 3 pointsr/pokemon

Idk how much you really want it, but this is what I use, works for DS, DSi, 3DS, and XL but its 20 bucks which isn't too bad really, but its up to you of course
http://www.amazon.com/Action-Replay-Nintendo-3DS-DSI-Lite/dp/B00A1AQJAO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1450220511&sr=8-3&keywords=3ds+action+replay+pokemon

u/BlueEyesToonDragon · 1 pointr/pokemon

I think they are very cool, but they cost way too much in my opinion, which makes it not worth it. FYI, Amazon has them here

u/Deku-Miguel · 1 pointr/pokemon

For just the Alola pokedex this guidebook includes one. Here is an alternate link on the Pokemon Center store with a pic of the poster so you can see if that's what you want.

u/tytotabuki · 5 pointsr/pokemon

With shipping Emerald is about $30. Fire red is about the same at $28

u/TAFHUC · 1 pointr/pokemon

Amazon is offering £33 for OR and £31.99 for AS

u/Andrewsarchus · 1 pointr/pokemon

Use Action Replay for the DS/DSi. It's about $20 on Amazon.com. You can use the codes generated on PokéGen to get them onto Black2, then use PokéTransfer to get them into PokéBank.

I use this one.

Why not get a case like this?. Won't be so permanent.

u/Holly164 · 11 pointsr/pokemon

MY CONSTANT NEED FOR ALL THINGS POKEMON HAS MADE MY WALLET CRY THIS MONTH.

ANYWAY, BACK ON TOPIC... I NEVER EXPERIENCED POKEMON LIKE THAT BECAUSE I HAD THE POKEMON HANDBOOK. IT WOULD BE PRETTY COOL TO GO IN BLIND, BUT I WORRY I'D END UP REGRETTING MY TEAM CHOICES. AND YEAH, THE WANTING ALL THE INFORMATION NOW THING AS WELL. SO I'LL PROBABLY NEVER EXPERIENCE THAT.

u/Nealon01 · 2 pointsr/pokemon

My girlfriend didn't know who the fuck Charizard was. She got this for Christmas that year.

u/Fastsalmon · 3 pointsr/pokemon

I can confirm that it still works and that the code is sent to you within 2 minutes. I'm from the Netherlands BTW.

I first made a fake account using hotmail (this isn't necessary btw, it is just precaution).

Then I went to this page on Amazon to purchase Omega Ruby.

I filled in the necessary information. WATCH OUT! You need to fill in a legit UK-Address and phone-number. Just think of a fake phone-number and find a UK-Address on Google Maps or something like that.

Then go to this website to create a fake Creditcardnumber. Just fill in a fake name and use VISA as the company.

Then purchase the order, wait for you e-mail and then cancel the order as soon as possible!

There you go! ORAS-Demo for everyone in Europe!

EDIT:
I found out that you can get 2 ORAS-demo codes if you pre-order both Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire separate from each other. So get 1 for yourself and give the other away! :D
