First off, I got what looks to be some great books from my match. I got Perdido Street Station, Hyperion, The Sparrow, The Little Country, and American Gods. I have never read nor heard of these titles, but I'm excited to start reading them.

Now for the best part. My match sent me an original manuscript for a novel they wrote. How awesome is that? They also included a short story (a side story to the novel) that includes me as a character. I can honestly say that this is one of the best things I've ever received! I think I'll start with the novel first.

*update: Thanks for all of the encouraging posts! It seems that I really struck gold on this exchange. I sent a little reddit gold love to my SS for the wonderful gift. It's such a great collection that I feel like the books I sent to my match are woefully inadequate.

Hey, girl in chemistry here. First I wanted to comment on the beaker glasses idea. If you do get something like that, go with a beaker mug and try to pick something with thicker glass. Regular beakers heat up easily and if she pours hot beverage, it will get too hot to hold in a few minutes even if there is a handle (this was tested out in a field by many chemists). Does she like to read? If so, get her The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean (http://www.amazon.com/Disappearing-Spoon-Madness-Periodic-Elements/dp/0316051632/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417607692&sr=8-1&keywords=disappearing+spoon). It's a book full of true, fun and sometimes weird stories about many elements. Any chemist would appreciate that. Also, anything periodic table will be appreciated, in addition to shower curtain idea there are fridge magnets. T-shirts are tough since most of them are really cheesy. Recently I came across this one which is not bad http://www.amazon.com/Never-Everything-Science-Unisex-T-shirt/dp/B00HWEHM6M/ref=pd_sim_a_32?ie=UTF8&refRID=09FK7M4D48KR5RD8K80H. Anything with moles and avogadro will do, example http://www.amazon.com/CafePress-Mole-Problems-Mug-Multi-color/dp/B00INLA6RU/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1417609281&sr=8-8&keywords=avogadro+number. Can't really think of anything else right now, but if you want to run a specific idea by me, feel free to do it.

Sure thing!

The LoTR art book is by Alan Lee (designer for the film adaptations), and can be found here.

The fantasy workshop book is by John Howe and can be found here.

Both are really fantastic. The LoTR book is just chock filled with awesome sketches and design work, I can't get enough.

If he really likes music then getting a mix cd or something would be awesome. You might know some killer bands that he doesn't know about. That would be something that I would totally enjoy.
I'm also a big history fan, [Napoleon's Privates] (http://www.amazon.com/Napoleons-Privates-Years-History-Unzipped/dp/0061257281/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1417480605&sr=1-1&keywords=napoleon%27s+privates) is probably one of the funnier "history" books I've read.

Cool! I've recently gotten in to learning more about wine, hosting tastings based on this book "Drink This" . It's been great. Would recommend.

Would've been nice if the paperclips were the pre-gift for something related, such as the one red paperclip guy's book.

I'm going to throw out a different idea than what's already been suggested: maybe get them a book related to the fashions they enjoy? Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty is incredible, although it's a little on the pricey side. I'm sure you can find something cheaper, though.

You...you do know that Nix has written two sequels, one prequel and at least two short pieces for the Old Kingdom series, right? He's got another sequel, Goldenhand, coming out this October.

I would send him this book and this book. I know they are controversial, but let's face it, chances are the guy is depressed because he feels lonely. I'd also recommend writing a kick ass letter to encourage him, as mentioned by yaboyAllen.

How odd. I was just looking at Helvetica and the New York Subway at the bookstore.
