It’s only a duology and not sure the author had any intentions of doing more but Rise Again and its sequel Rise Again: Below Zero are great. Ben Tripp is an accomplished political writer and has a way of humanizing his characters, especially the lead character, that I found refreshing.

I also really enjoyed the first novelization of The Walking Dead by Jay Bonansinga, The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor but later books suffer from...something. Probably being in the TWD universe?

If you’re into short stories I thought Nights of the Living Dead was an excellent collection. It’s got gore, goof, and gravitas, something for everyone.

I still need to finish Sophie Littlefield’s Aftertime trilogy, but that’s a strong series.

Anyone who likes comics must read these 2 books: Understanding Comics and Reinventing Comics. He wrote a 3d one I haven't read yet.

McCloud wrote a brilliant comic some 20 years ago called Zot!.

Those books will change your view of comics in pretty much the same way as Story by Robert McKee will change your appreciation of film.

If you need a book to help Proper care and feeding of zombies is a good book, it has good description of different types and how they move and stuff

The AFTER Series, by Scott Nicholson - not regular zombies, but still good reading.

After

THE HUNGRY Series by Harry Shannon. Lots of action and fun.

Here's some more ideas:

  • multi-purpose axe
  • a small mirror (for signalling)
  • rations (either freeze dried, canned, bars, etc)
  • a small map of your town and the surrounding areas
  • your favorite book(s) (mental well-being is just as important as physical)
  • 75+ ft rope that can support 200+lbs
  • binoculars
  • Extremely useful books that explain how to set traps and what plants are safe to eat
  • Camo/Ghillie. While this probably won't help protect you from zombies it will protect you other people (who are also a big threat). (This is pretty big & expensive...but ya know...helpful)

There's a lot more but that's all I can think of atm.

I appreciate your effort! Thankyou!

I bought a book a couple of months ago called The Dead Walk. The cover is different on mine, but I found it pretty bloody comprehensive. Full of stuff I'd never heard of before.

I'll take a look at your other recommendations :-)

EDIT: Sorry, this is the book I bought! The one with Jenna Jameson from Zombie Strippers on the cover! ;-)

It's a little sappy with the teen romance crap but it's a interesting world.

Good book, just finishing my 3rd read through.

"Recorded Attacks" is coming out Oct 6

It seems to be a graphic novel with the story by Max Brooks.

Survival Related: The SAS Survival Guide, The Ultimate Sniper by (Ret.) Col. J. Plaster, The Emergency-Disaster Survival Guidebook.

I know it's not a book. The Colony is an interesting watch if you ever get some time to sink in information.

favorite zombie books so far have been Day by Day Armageddon by J.L. Bourne and Plague of the Dead by Z.A. Recht. Adding in this album by The Gorillaz just adds on to the mood of the book.

Also being from SE Texas and driving most of the roads talked about in Day by Day Armageddon makes the book a little extra unnerving.

I live in NYC and was around for 9/11 and the blackout, and both times, through all the chaos, I met up with friends and random people and pooled our money together and bought beer and hung out on rooftops - so I'm not sure how I would handle a long-term scenario (both of these 'disasters' were very localized and pretty much had things go back to semi-normal within a day or two).

But it did get me to realize that disasters happen like this and got me thinking. Recently, I bought and read these books and subsequently followed some of their advice to get a little more prepared.

Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family

How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times

TL; DR: Every time I've been in a disaster scenario, I got drunk. But it made me realize I'm unprepared so I bought some books about it.
