TCAPS or Peltor. Basically anything with active protection, which more or less equates to noise canceling headphones.

Special forces probably use hearing protection like these. Works with gunfire and explosions too.

Short answer: ear protection.

Long answer: Peltor Tactical 6S. Double up with foamies for larger rifle caliber or extended indoor shooting.

There is active hearing protection as well. Basically like high tech noise cancelling headphones that activate for noises above a certain frequency/decibel. Normal speech passes through fine, but weapons fire would "turn on" the active part of the device.

I am extremely ELI5'ing what they are though. It would be something similar to this though: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Peltor-Tactical-Hearing-Protector/dp/B00009363P

Yeah. I don't usually think like that, but it kind of stuck out to me. You don't need a gun until you need it, and it's not good to be the guy without one when everyone else has 5. Some of us have a lot more than 5.

Also, look into hearing protection with speakers that shut off when the gun goes off.

I bought some of these as ear protection but I stopped wearing them. I find that if I am going into a CQB area of a field I just protect one ear with my stock and hope the other one doesn't get shot.

What's the difference between these tactical sport headphones and my JVC HARX700's?

Has anyone ever tried the active protectors like this?

They have microphones on them, and rebroadcast the outside sound into the headphones at an adjustable volume. Importantly, they let you keep conversation-level sounds the same but attenuate louder noises.

I've used them myself for working with loud equipment when you still need to hear and talk to people, but I'm curious if they'd be good for sensory overload.

If you wanted to look at something other than what everyone else here posted, check out Peltor. I own a pair of these and they work great, my only complaint is the battery is a bit difficult to get to, though I've had them for a while and changed batteries once.

In an alley crammed unnaturally full of magical shops hocking a wide variety of hobnobs and whatsits and creatures of interesting origin, you can imagine that accidents often occur when someone bumps a delicate instrument or sticks their fingers in the wrong cage. A discerning shop owner will design their store such that these incidents are minimized, but with real estate being the price it is in Diagon Alley, every square foot of product display counts.

Years of working in such a...stimulating environment can take its toll on a witch or wizard, and so it was that a set of ear-coverings was enchanted to allow conversational noise to pass through unfettered but outrageously loud roaring, moaning, banging, cursing, wailing, and munching is muted, leaving the wearer's ears fresh and perky for the sounds that really matter, like the jingle of Galleon's in a customer's pocket.

DIAGONALLY! And I will be making my first gift tonight when my contest ends (:
