Under $550 would be pointless when at $600 you can get the Acer Aspire V3-572G with an i5-4210U, 8GB RAM, and Nvidia GT 840M dedicated graphics.
I can't find you anything in that price range with a back-lit keyboard that still has a decent GPU.
What there is in your range is this Acer with a i5 and a 840M and it's 1080P counterpart.
If you stretch another $100, I'd recommend this, as its 850M utilizes GDDR5, which will give you much better performance, but, it's a 17 inch laptop.
Even laptops with a 1080p screen at this budget range usually feature low quality TN panels. If you want a great screen, you won't get something with enough GPU power to run PoE, which is generally tough at this price anyway. Something like the GT 820M is so underpowered that it's almost not worth having. I'd shoot for something with a GT 840M at least.
For something without a dedicated GPU but with a great screen, check out the refurbished ASUS Q501LA, which has a really great IPS 1080p touchscreen. You'd still be able to play Civ5 at low settings and Hearthstone at low/medium.
The Acer V3-572G-587W is a 1366x768 screen option, though it has a GT 840M GPU, which has a better capability to play CoE at that low resolution. I'd wait for the price to drop on this again below $600 before buying.
Ultimately, however, if you're going to start school in September, then I think the best option is simply to wait until then, saving up a bit more money for a better machine.
$250 there is your problem. A 400 dollar laptop bought two years ago will run a game like skyrim at the same settings as a console.

Runs at respectable performance for most games you can throw at it at monitor res. Includes new stuff like Shadow of Mordor. Would love to see what really modern beta stuff like Elite:Dangerous would do on there.
New consoles just came out, so it will take a few years to trounce them, but if the showing is like this only a year in out of a 7 year lifespan and the tech they use only just now started circulating into laptops (clever shared gpu memory), that is telling. Couple that with the recent advances in mobile gpu tech allowing 90% of desktop power, its going to be tough for a dedicated console manufacturer in a few years.

SSD = Solid State Drive, HDD = Hard Drive. HDD's store your information on magnetic coating while SSD's store your information on flash memory chips. SSD's are considerably faster than HDD's and perform a lot better, but can be quite costly.
The HP Laptop you provided does not have the best hardware for the price. Sure it has 12 gigs of RAM, but you don't need that much if you just want to play league and watch some shows. Plus, the 8610G won't be able to run a lot of games and won't run league with high graphical settings.
Most $500-range laptops nowadays are able to run league decently. Higher up Intel HD graphics can usually guarantee a solid 60 fps on low to medium settings. My old dell laptop from 2010 can efficiently run league at 60 fps with low settings. Lenovo's are pretty good at this price range.

If you want to throw a few more bucks in and give yourself some breathing room for newer games, go look for some mid-range gpu's. It doesn't hurt to throw in an extra $50-100, as the laptop will have better build-quality and last longer. I would suggest going for something along the lines of the Geforce 840M. All of them should get you well above 60 fps in league with medium-high settings. These laptops tend to go on sale on newegg, so catch them while they are cheap (not now). One of my friends managed to snag the Asus for around 550, so just keep looking on newegg.

Ok, so if you want to use it for CAD, then a dedicated graphics card is what you'd want. Do you care how slim it is also? IF not the here are some decent choices below $600(Not including Tax)

They both have the same 500GB hard drive and both come with 8GB of RAM.

Crap: I didn't realize the Acer that you posted earlier had a dedicated graphics card. For $380 it's really good. Probably can save some money and buy a ~$100 128GB SSD, or higher if you want. Battery life for that Acer is ~4-5 hours though.

It's a sub $600 laptop that has a 720p-ish screen, 1 gb harddrive, 8 gb am, and an NVIDIA 840m. The processor can run as fast as 2.7 ghz. The 840m is not the best card in the world, but it will run circles around the 820m that /u/logicow posted. At 720p, the 840m can run Bioshock Infinite on medium at 60 fps. It can easily run dota 2, CS:GO,
Ultra Street Fighter 4, and Skyrim on respectable settings.

People on here often complain about the quality of Acer's hardware, but personally, I'm blown away. I owned two Lenovo laptops (g510p) in the span of 8 days. Both came broken (speakers on one and deal pixels on the other) The quality of the keyboard/bezel/trackpad was laughable. My Acer feels solid. It honestly feels like a Macbook in terms of the hardware quality.
Lastly, the acer boots up in 10 seconds. It's weird, because my gaming desktop with an SSD boots up in 15, and apparently the acer doesn't have an SSD. I can't really explain it, but the point is that it boots up in 10 seconds.

Of course it would. The processor is really strong and even though you won't be able to run swtor at the highest, with a bit of tweaking you should get close to max settings and really good fps. If you wanna go for the ultra settings I strongly suggest going up to $1000 since there are not that many options for less than that. Go up to $1000 and you will afford an 860m and even an 870m and once you get that you are set for at least 4 years, depending on what games you play and the quality of the producer.

Just real quick, people who are suggesting laptop computers for others probably already know that Intel surpasses AMD per core processing :p
Onto your suggestion, this is a decent enough laptop that should run Dolphin games better than native settings. It boasts up to 7 hours of battery life, has an HDMI port, a dedicated graphics card, and has a mid-range I5 processor. The only negative thing i can see about it is that it's screen resolution is nothing to boast about sitting at 1366X786, it's not bad, but i'm sure someone else could probably find something better. Also, as far as I know emulators are much more CPU dependent than GPU so you could probably get away with splurging for a stronger CPU and taking one without a dedicated GPU. Hope this helps.

The Acer Aspire V3-572G is $100 over your top budget, but I'm worried that anything less than or at $500 will not be able to run the Sims 4 when it comes out in September. This Acer has alright build quality, but it will certainly be able to run the game when it comes out. It also is a good overall laptop so she should be able to use it for the coming years.

AMD APUs allow you to play games in a price bracket where you often can't get a discrete graphics card on an Intel-equipped laptop.
They're not great though. The 8650M is at the bottom of the mid-tier range of mobile graphics chips. It's still going to be better for a lot of games than a faster Intel processor with just Intel Graphics, but it's still definitely a compromise.
So they're a definitely viable option in the price bracket. That said, if you can return it, you might consider this Acer. You'll lose a third of your hard drive space, and it's $9 over budget before tax, but you'll get a faster processor and graphics card, more RAM, and a pretty big increase in battery life.
I actually have a fairly similar laptop to the one you've just got, and for what I paid for it I don't really regret it ($500 before tax.) But for $600 I think I'd definitely have gone with the Intel-equipped Acer I linked instead.

Honestly, you should get a laptop with a discrete graphics card, and don't bother with an I7 and stick to an I5.

For example the Acer Aspire V3-572G-587W which comes with an Intel i5 and a Nvidia GT840M. Will play games like BF4 on mediumish settings with an acceptable frame rate. And for a few bucks more you can get the model with the 1080p display or the Lenovo Y40, which has a Radeon R9 M275, which is better than a Nvidia GT 840M.

It's difficult to get gaming performance in that price range, but definitely don't get the HP. It's going to break on you within the year. Maybe this Acer or look into Lenovo Thinkpads?
If you don't need the performance, though, you can probably find a nice ultrabook or something. You're probably going to have 24 hour access to a lab with all the software you could want.

A few suggestions:
Asus x550 Great dgpu (840m), i7 processor, 1080p screen. This is a great laptop at a very cheap price- unfortunately it's also over budget by $30. If your budget isn't absolute, then I would highly recommend this.
Acer v3-572g decent i5 CPU- not the greatest but for a laptop it should do, great GPU (840m again), run of the mill screen. If you're used to a very high quality screen then this will be noticeably worse. If not then this should be fine (I personally don't care enough)

It's actually pretty not great for it's price. Only an 820M at nearly 700$ is not a solid deal. This is a better option.
