Just pick up a chromebook imo.

Refurbed 4gb Acer c720 here. They can be had for even cheaper, but this is the 4gb model (as opposed to 2gb). I currently use the 2gb model for school. It's a great little computer. 9 hours screen on time from 100% battery, light, can run a Linux distro if you do need more powerful software.

Not worth the $300 price difference for the Nexus 9.

Edit: link was 180 at the time of posting. Anywhere from 140-180 is a good price for a recurved c720

Do you need Windows or will this work?

I have an Asus c720 Chromebook laying around if your old man would be able to use that?
It has 4GB of RAM and the fastest Celeron processor they put in Chromebooks.

Bought it in the states a few months back since they don't sell that model with those specs here in AUS but now I don't actually use it for much.

They are just entering the market now.

These new haswell celeron models do not have upgradable RAM. Still unknown what the situation is with replacing the SSD with something larger.
This Acer and the similar HP 14 both have SD card slots so if nothing else you could use that for local storage of files. Not ideal but available.

i have the acer it flies. also was on sale down from $380 to $310 for first time the other day... check how good the reviews are unless u want to watch IPS videos on a chromebook 2- the i3 can take 50 tabs and chromecast at same time. faster than my 16gb ram fusion drive ssd 2013 core i7 mac mini that cost me 5x this i3 http://www.amazon.com/Acer-C720-Chromebook-11-6-Inch-4GB/dp/B00FNPD1OY

The loss in performance will not be that great. If you really want bang/buck, the 2955U is definitely the one to get. The i3 isn't that much more powerful for being almost double the price.

2955U, 4 GB model factory refurb from Acer on Amazon for $170

I have a refurbished 4GB c720 directly from Acer and although I've only had it for a few weeks, everything is perfect so far.

As others have mentioned, there are other c720 resellers on Amazon, so beware. The ones Acer lists themselves always go for $189 but understandably they go quickly.

Dude. I've found an Acer c720 4gb on amazon Used. It is the first option listed here under CaLogistics:

I'd be willing to pay you $400 to ship it here
edit: I'd pay you $50 upfront as a deposit.

I've got the 4GB version of the Acer C720 Chromebook and was wondering how much I can get for it, here's the Amazon link.

3 options:

The Acer have a touchscreen - and some argue a bad keyboard

Hmmm, that sounds like you need quite a bit of storage. Chromebooks are mostly of the 16 and 32GB SSD variety. Is Linux friendly for video editing? (no idea, never used Linux full time before). Maybe getting the Acer C720 4GB RAM version while having most of your videos on a flashdrive would be an option?

This Acer C720 uses an i3 - http://www.amazon.com/Acer-C720-3871-11-6-Inch-Chromebook-Granite/dp/B00KOUIZ9E
