If you just want to carry games and the Switch I got this one. For the price it is a great deal has a hard plastic shell and a nice foam fitted lining (think like those fancy camera or gun cases). I have dropped the case a bunch and it protects the switch in it perfectly (Once in a shallow puddle. I would not recommend swimming with it though.).

I got the AmazonBasics Switch vault case as an add-on for $6 last year and couldn't be happier. This thing is built like a tank. Can throw it in my bag without fear of damage and even survived a pretty nasty fall when I slipped on ice last winter. Would def recommend!

Had my Switch in one of these while traveling up to Orlando.

3.5 hour drive. At some point, my Switch turned on mid trip and just idled for the rest of the drive. It was set to never sleep for some reason. Got to my destination, Switch was still on. At that point, it had ~30% battery and was running pretty hot. The fans were on overdrive trying to keep it cool. The game holder flap was starting to get mushy, but wasn't at its melting point. It surprised me that it overheat and die in there.

In that scenario I'd get an Amazon Basics Vault case. The hard outer shell protects it well in a bag and keeps things from accidentally turning on the Switch by bumping the case which drains the battery. No room for accessories like additional Joycons or battery banks, but you could throw those in your backpack separate if needed.

The Switch Pro controller is well worth it if you're going to be playing in docked mode.

Also a tempered glass screen protector is highly recommended.

Amazon basics has a hard shell case that is great for the price and is pretty subtle.

I never had any issues with the SP but my DS Lite's left-side hinge broke from just opening it to play one time about two years after I bought it new, which prevented me from being able to play unless it was on a flat surface. At the time I had a carrying case, wrist strap and was super careful with it all the time too.

After the hinge snapped, if I angled it too high it would shut because there was nothing keeping it from shutting, and when it was on a table it would bend all the way back which was annoying but at least I could play it. Couldn't play it while walking or seated up or anything, which may not sound like much but was really super annoying. Looked online and realized it was a common issue. Ended up tossing it after my attempt to repair it broke the top screen, and bought a 3DS. I haven't changed any of my habits in regards to system care because I can't think of any ways I can be more careful with it but neither hinge has broken yet. But the hinges will break eventually since physical, moving parts rubbing against each other break down after time.

Dust and junk are not an issue as long as you have a case and put the device in the case whenever you're not using it, and I've had a case for all of the portable gaming systems I've owned (including GBA, which I don't use anymore but is still clean as a whistle). I bought this hard shell case for my Switch because it has cut-outs on the top that protect the analog sticks. I don't have a 2DS but if I did I'd pay more to buy a case like that one to protect the analog sticks so they're not getting wobbled around in transit as well.

  1. Grab one of these: http://www.8bitdo.com/wireless-usb-adapter/

  2. The switch is all plastic (even the screen) so it's a bit more susceptible to damage. In some cases, it has also warped because of heat, so be sure you have good airflow wherever you put the dock. Definitely get a hard(er) carrying case (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Vault-Case-Nintendo-Switch-Black/dp/B07348551R/), a tempered glass screen protector (https://www.amazon.com/amFilm-Tempered-Protector-Switch-2017/dp/B01N3ASPNV/) and maybe a slim case for the switch itself if you drop shit a lot or just leave it lying around (https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Station-Protective-Accessories/dp/B078MKQY2W/).

What would be the downside of a refurbished Switch, though?

I've kind of gotten in the mindset that officially refurbed items really are not much different than the brand new ones. I bought my Canon T6 refurbed, had the same exact warranty as a brand new one, no issues with it.

I feel like the refurb price is a better deal than the Wal-Mart ad. I don't think the case is a big deal an the $20 credit is mitigated by the lower price. Honestly I kind of like this case better anyways.

I'm still miffed it doesn't come with a game by default, though. Darn consoles these days.

I use the vault case and have taken it across the world shoved in backpacks and never had any issue. It only holds like 6 carts tho, but its hard plastic and can easily withstand drops. I have the red:

Hey folks, PC gamer here who just got a Switch about two weeks ago. I love it. At first I said, I don't need a case because I will never take this out of the house. Suddenly, I see a lot of value in bringing it with me so we can have short gaming sessions during downtime. I started looking for a case but I can't seem to find anything that really seems to fit my needs. I read through the reddit guide, and scoured Amazon, Target and Best Buy. I would love some help because I am a little picky. I feel like Switch cases are designed for just the Switch, and a few games or every for single accessory. I like the Amazon Basic Vault case but if I were to go with that, how would I best transport the few accessories (Power A stand and joycon lanyards) I care about? I got this case at Target, but it doesn't really work well for me.

Any thoughts? Here is more of what I am looking for:

  1. I am trying to stay all digital, and I see the game flaps as potential annoyances and wastes of space. I also don't need space for the dock, AC adapter, additional joycons, or any other cables.
  2. I got the Power A stand and I really like it. I would like to have a safe place to put it.
  3. I don't care if the joy cons are attached in the case, but I do want to have space for the controller lanyards so we can comfortably play two player.
  4. I prefer hard cases as it will travel in an un-cushioned backpack pocket.

If you recover or replace it, pick up one of these. It just looks like a generic case, and folks don't pay it much attention. Plus you can drop it down a flight of stairs and it'll be fine. Plus, no identifying logos like some other cases.
