Your problem is the lack of an actual preamp. Phantom Power does not do anything to the actual microphone signal level, it merely provides the capacitor circuitry in a condenser microphone with the power necessary to operate. However, the output from that microphone is still going to be extremely low. (Microphones are generally -40 to -60 dBv, which is 100 to 1000 times weaker than the signal powering your speakers, for example.) Microphone inputs on motherboards are notoriously craptastic as well.

Vileem's suggestion to try using the USB output on the UPM-1 is a good one - this is probably going to provide you with a much stronger signal to your computer. If you want to keep things analog until they hit the motherboard, then you need a preamp that also provides phantom power. Something like the ART TubeMP - but this could lead to other problems as you may run into phasing issues or left-channel-only issues when plugging into a computer input. This is why USB preamps are generally preferred.

If you want cheap and effective, my recommendation would be to send the UPM-1 back, and get something like the Behringer UM2 - for $30, it handles phantom power, it has direct monitoring (meaning you can hear the microphone right as you speak, instead of after passing through the motherboard and OS which adds latency), has nice big dials for controlling level on top, and also acts as a secondary sound card (output device) as well - honestly it will likely sound better than your motherboard's sound card.

Would highly recommend this. I use it. http://amzn.com/B0002GZZNY take the output and use a 1/4 in to 1/8 (3.5mm) and plug it straight into your computer mic input.

I use this exact preamp for that exact use and it works wonderfully: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002GZZNY/

$50, worth every penny.

To everyone downvoting me, I own the interface OP has, as well as the same mic. I work in video production and have years of professional experience working both with and as an audio engineer. The interface OP bought is a consumer-grade, desktop interface that is designed to work with low output impedance microphones. The SM57 is a high output impedance mic and cannot be properly amped by the preamps in the interface OP bought. Just because it doesn't require phantom power doesn't mean the mic doesn't require powerful amplification.

It's one thing to not understand OP's problem. It's another to bash the guy that does and is actually providing useful information.

OP, these are your options for budget mic preamps:

I've used both and the Cloudlifter is the better unit, but both will do just fine.

I need a preamp for my AT2035 and I have these 3 picked out. I'm new to all this stuff so I'm not sure what the difference between them is and which one is the best to get.

Very new to the microphone world, but I am curious as to what you guys might recommend to fix the noise/static issue I'm getting.

My headset microphone was dieing and I decided to upgrade to a microphone that isn't just a headset mic. The intention is to use it as my mic for gaming as well as giving me the option to record guitar/vocals, and possibly to do some streaming. Over black friday I got a pretty good deal on a Floureon BM-800 Condenser mic (nothing fancy, I know). I also picked up a phantom power supply for it as well.

So my current setup is XLR to phantom power supply, and XLR to 1/8" into my PC.

I had to turn the gain way up to get a decent volume and I'm guessing this is to do with not having a preamp. With the gain this high, I get a lot of noise from a fairly quiet room (even if I move the mic into the hallway the noise is constant). I was looking at the following preamps.

ART TubeMP Tube Microphone Preamp

Focusrite Scarlett Solo (2nd Gen) USB Audio Interface

So, my questions are...

  1. Did I just buy too low of a quality of mic in that, even with a preamp, the noise/static will still be there?

  2. Would either of those preamps cleanup the noise/static from the mic? (The Scarlett is appealing with the 1/4" hookup for my guitar as well)

  3. Is there any software I can run my mic through to filter out noise? I would assume this would not be the ideal way to deal with noise though, and that a preamp would be a better solution for this.

I can provide an audio sample when I get home from work. Thanks!

I use a cheap mic preamp that has both unbalanced and balanced outputs. Unbalanced goes to the RS cable, balanced goes to the amp via a XLR to 1/4" TS cable I made - which converts to unbalanced by shorting cold to ground.

Wait, why do you need a 1/4"? To go to the mixer?

If so, you need any mic preamp. Focusrite ISA is great, but if you're super budget, get an ART Tube Preamp (I remember these being cheaper, maybe look for sales?)
