Depends if the price is right. It might be more expensive than buying 2 separate 290x's. You don't actually need to crossfire. Crossfire is just to have separate GPUs power the same graphical output. Youll be crunching numbers so just plugging in the cards and not necessarily cross firing them will be okay. You don't need anything super powerful for a CPU, an i7 is more than overkill. Just look for a motherboard that has as many PCIe 16x slots as many GPUs as you are planning to get.

Also you could do it the old milkcrate style. Get the old Asrock BTC board, some pentium or celeron and suspend all your GPUs in a milkcrate attaching them to the board with risers, and then put everything in some open housing. check out /r/cryptorigporn if you are into that.

The well known motherboards like H81 Pro BTC are having prices much higher than they should have, just because the demand is as high as their popularity. For example the ASRock H81 PRO BTC is available on Amazon for the ridiculous price of 444 usd(because that model was so popular and is not produced anymore - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HEUIS2G/). A newer version(but still old) ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 has a more reasonable price of 187 usd(https://www.amazon.com/ASRock-H81-PRO-BTC-R2-0/dp/B01M5FQZYE/).

In the same time you can find some decent gaming 6 or 7 pci-e slots motherboards with the latest Intel Z170 chipset for just a little bit more than 100 usd.

I'm compiling a list of them here: http://cryptowizzard.com/motherboards/. You you know any other model please let me know so I can add it to the list.

Asrock h81 > looks like 4 in stock at 138.

Cool. I think 1200 should be plenty. Just be safe when you decide to go to another coin. Don't want you to lose precious mining time and money due to a PSU working too hard.

Regarding the Biostar boards, and again from personal experience, they are the best boards I have used, period. I've used both of these boards, and compared to the TB85, they caused me more issues. My rigs would freeze randomly, knowing that every component was fine. When I would install/replace GPUs while using those Mobos I always had an issue of 1 or 2 cards not being seen, and I would have to swap which slots the risers were connected to, eventually getting the GPUs to be seen. I've never had that problem with the TB85. I just plug my GPUs in the order I want them in, and I'm good to go. But again, this is personal experiences, and I've seen people swear by those Mobos and how good they are, just didn't work well for me. All my rigs now run TB85 Mobos.

Great! Now I'm getting emails from Amazon saying the GPUs are on back order and they don't know how long the delays will be. :-/

By the way, do you know about CPU compatibility?

I will have the H81 motherboard, and I have ordered the CPU (BX80637G1620), but now I am not sure if it will fit into the slot on the motherboard. What do you think? Will it be OK, or should I get the BX80646G1820, or something else?

The mobo: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HEUIS2G/

The CPU: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B2HH5GM/

Thanks so much, without you guys in the community I'd be playing on a PS3 somewhere oblivious to Vertcoin!

Other hardware

I kinda hate to contribute towards these items being out of stock, but I want to help out my fellow miners as much as possible. The more the merrier. The easier it is for newcomers, the better.

Motherboard: ASRock H81 Pro BTC. Just checked the price and it's lower than what I got it for. Never seen it that low, actually.

CPU: Intel Pentium Processor G3220 3.0 GHz LGA

SSD: SanDisk 64 GB

16x to 1x risers Would definitely not buy from ebay again if I had the choice/if I built again. Took sooooo long to ship. I think it shipped the very last day of the estimated shipping date.

PSU: Rosewill 1300W 80 PLUS Gold

The shelf is one I got from my job for free :P. Yay!

Only a very small number of motherboard support 7, but here are a few options. One supports 7; the rest support 6. Make sure they are compatible with your CPU (it is easier to pick the motherboard before picking the CPU. Just get the cheapest CPU you can that fits in the motherboard for less than $50):
