Buy a kit that comes with a selection of fuses. If it's too late for that, you can get fuses at any auto parts store.

You have a few options:

  • Tap the switched 12V line to the gauge cluster. Be very sure that you're tapping the correct power lead and do the wiring with the cluster disconnected. If your LED lighting draws a lot of current, say 500mA or higher, I would consider drawing power from some other circuit like the head-unit or the 12V power-point.
  • Tap the switched power lead to the head-unit (stereo). That will turn-on/off with the ignition switch in the ACC and ON positions.
  • Tap the power lead to the 12V power-point (cigarette lighter). In most cars this is turned-on/off by the ignition switch being in the ACC or ON position. Don't use this if the power-point is always on.
  • Determine if your car uses standard or mini style fuses. Buy an appropriate fuse "tap" like this and use it to tap a fuse intended for cabin lights or the 12V power-point (cigarette lighter). This will give you power that is switched on/off by the ignition switch (technically, it's switched on/off by a relay but the relay is turned on/off by the ignition switch so it's operationally the same thing).

The usual cautions/warnings apply with respect to identifying the correct lead/contact that you're tapping the power from, how you make the connection(s), and disconnecting the ground lead of the battery before working.
