If the power strip has any type of surge suppression circuitry, or even a switch with a little light on it, you can't use it with 220v.
Unless it is just outlets and a plug, don't do it - it will cause problems. Don't ask me how I know this..
What I ended up using was something like this with a couple of these.
It's a name brand, OP was using an extension cord designed for a lamp basically, like this http://www.amazon.com/Axis-45505-Outlet-Indoor-Extension/dp/B006ZON7Y6/ref=lp_495312_1_2?s=lamps-light&ie=UTF8&qid=1395325657&sr=1-2 but was using it for something with way more wattage. Not advised at all.
Gauge is really important.
