I'm not sure how big your problem is but I'm also in Michigan and had this issue last fall. I kept seeing 1-3 ants in my house every day. Over a few weeks I tracked down where they were coming from and going to and applied this crazy gel outside my house and near their nest entry point. It worked great. It clings to the ants so they bring the poison back to their nest and the result was apparent. Any ant I saw after application looked like they were drunk as a skunk and quickly died.

Step 1: Find the nest or major ant trails
Step 2: Apply this stuff. Its carpenter ant crack.

Do you know what the good products are? I pay $40 a month for pest control and when I told them about carpenter ants they said "there's nothing we can do". So I had to cancel but I bought some of this stuff
Your lease will say who is in charge of pest control. Usually it's the landlord and should be with something like Carpenter ants.
Just FYI, there are tons of different types of ants, not all eat food. If you have the little guys, that stink when you squish them (Odorous House Ants) they're a PITA. Use Terro, don't kill them outright, all ants need to be able to take the bait back to the nest to kill the colony. The ants I'm dealing with won't come out sometimes for days at a time... but they always return. The winged swarm was too much, I've got to find something that works.
This is the only stuff that works on carpenter ants.
