i bought the killowatt with the digital timer built in, so it's useful even when i'm not measuring anything. http://www.amazon.com/P3-International-P4480-Electricity-Electronic/dp/B001U638PM it paid for itself when i discovered i didn't need to upgrade the PSU in my PC to accommodate a new GPU card even while on full load. be sure to get a short extension cord when you buy any killowatt http://www.amazon.com/C2G-Cables-03137-Outlet-Extension/dp/B000233WJ6

Assuming you're in the US, something like this should fix you right up. It will move the bulky plug away from the UPS, freeing up the blocked port.

I get what you are saying but there are a few points to make:

  1. Don't just jam a wire in your outlet's third hole, the wire could snake up through the internals of the socket and cross. Get something like this (there are much cheaper ones), and break off all BUT the ground pin. Plug THAT into your outlet, there is no actual AC in the line, and it will be safer to jam your random wire into the other end.

  2. As another commenter stated, this is not advised if you are not 100% aware of the electrical installation of the establishment. You could get a polarity checker which will make sure the ground wired correctly (or at least safely)

  3. Electrical ground is literally the worse ground possible to use and will be noisy.
