Depends on your area. Check and see what a 55 gallon tank costs, and plan on $100-120 for a good pump off amazon.
I am very happy with my penn plax cascade 500 filter. The cascade 1200 (rated for 150 gallons) is on Amazon right now for $90 they are really quiet, with decent media, but I would still get some purigen and matrix. If you wanted to go with a bit less of a filter, the cascade 700 is $80, and rated at 65 gallons. The 1000 is out of stock at most places I've looked, but petco has it for $90, and it's rated for 100 gallons.
Every size includes a spray bar. The only complaint I have about this filter is that the intake tube is way too long for my little 20 gallon tank, but that's what lily tubes are for, I guess. I emailed them about the intake tube, and they said that they only make one size of intake tube for all of them. For one of the most affordable, not garbage canister filters on the market, they gotta cut corners somewhere.

If i remember, and this is a big if ( my memory is pretty shite for some things) i will come back and report after i have done a full change, but at the very least it means one week waiting period to see if it has ended the cycle.

Back in the day I had fluval canisters. I like this one better. It was a bear to get primed but considering I wasn't able to raise the tank off the ground, I was expecting that.
