I wish that point were lost on me. When my modem doesn't need upgrading because I'm not paying for "Ultimate" (from TWC) speeds of 60 Mbps down... and my modem has been out on the market for over 14 years. Seriously. Look at the top review on Amazon. It's from 2002. They advertise getting rid of 56k in the product description! My almost old enough to drive a car modem supports 42 Mbps down! 10 up! I wouldn't need a new modem if I only cared about up speed for TWC's new "Ultimate 100" service. Not that I really ever use that much up bandwidth, but still.

We are finally getting speeds where I'll need to buy a new modem and I'm not going to feel like I'm getting ripped off by paying $60+ a month for something that should be far cheaper (and more reliable - though YMMV by location and ISP). Our internet in this country sucks in comparison in cost and speed to many other "tech" countries - and it is totally the fault of the ISPs. Just a couple of years ago, I was paying $40 a month for 6 Mbps down, and I had no choice. Now, at least I'm paying $40 a month for 15 down (better speeds than 80% of the country as of 2015 - see source above). Soon, if TWC actually rolls this out, it will be $40 a month for 50 down - which is great. And if we rolled out a municipal ISP to give the middle finger to giant companies like TWC that have held us at these slow speeds - I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I've known for years our internet hasn't been great. I'm just happy it's finally getting better.
